[IGN] 40 minute Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain demo 1080p60 - 6/18 at 5 AM PST

Real men use tranquilizer pistols.

Honestly I'm probably going to equip myself with the Sniper Tranquilizer and Pistol Only .

Or if they have the Carl Gustav from Peace Walker.

The only way you should get to shoot is if you disarm enemies.

Thats how I like to play.

See, I used to be exactly the same way. Since MGS1 and Tenchu 1 I've been a stealth purist. No gadgets, no combat, just ghost through every level.

In MGS, as a very last resort I used the tranq pistol.

I've ghosted Splinter Cell 1-3, Thief 1-3, MGS 1-4 etc, and I did the same for Ground Zeroes, too.

But one time I got in a fight in Ground Zeroes and, tired of trying to get the S-rank for so long, I just went with it. I shot my way out of the fight.

And it was glorious. Unlike in practically every other stealth game ever, combat in Ground Zeroes is actually just as good as the stealth is. It's not too easy, it's thrilling, the shooting itself is satisfying and the ways enemies react is fun. I've always seen my playthroughs in MGS as pure-stealth, but now I'll happily play it as an action game, too.

Man that demo is a huge bummer. All my fears from the previews have been pretty much confirmed.

The game looks like it's really well made but the actual game look super repetitive and instead of having a proper campaign experience like in previous MGS games you just get another generic open world sandbox game with hundreds of boring and generic missions to do.

It basically look like if it was an Ubisoft take on the MGS stealth gameplay.

I'm getting so tired of all those open world games we're getting almost every month nowadays.

Also fuck Keifer, was not worth it to get him over Heyter if that means he only has like 15lines in the game. Sounds like some kind of ego trip from Kojima or something

... The heck you smoking?

The collectibles are all usable items. They get you more money/resources to get more gadgets or weapons with. Or they're cassettes, which reveal more of the story (without interrupting gameplay) or give you more music.

This isn100% unlike a Ubisoft game, where 75% of the collectibles, and the ones in greatest abundance, add nothing to the gameplay.

And this isn't "cookie cutter" side mission territory either. The side missions are just as hand-crafted and unique as the campaign missions. What's more, they open up new gameplay mechanics like interrogations or buddies.

I think you took away a lot of misconceptions from this demo. But I think the demo was a bad idea for overexplaining and overrevealing a lot of the game's systems.

Looks good.

Hopefully there's no way you have have a D-Walker that decked out by the third mission of the actual game. That should be a 70+% through the main story kind of device.

I'm honestly very interested in seeing speedrunners play this game full on Stealth.

Which buddies they choose to bring and how they tackles the situation.

Glad to see that the Peace Walker theme is back (you can hear it when you are customizing your stuff before heading out).

Good demo, September 1st can't get here any faster!

The fact that someone compared this game to a UBISOFT game makes me so mad.

You get a mech and a dog!

Game of the forever.

Don't forget your Waifus.

Lots of Female Soldiers to Rescue. LIKE A BOSS.

Holy fnck.

I never doubted that this was gonna be great despite everything that's going on.

But when Asia's Only Time Will Tell and Spandau Ballet's True came on....

Goddamit I fncking need this game right now.

They have cassette tapes you can listen to that are supposed to fill in for this. If it's like Peace Walker, you'll gradually unlock tapes of Big Boss having those kinds of conversations with the characters on Mother Base as you progress through the story missions. It's just not realtime.

Yeah, and it's probably just me, but I liked the more realtime approach in the other games. Wander into the women's bathroom call Mei Ling, and she gets pissed at you. Stuff like that. It's weird and it's random, but that's MGS.

ah. as long as it's not nanomachines, I'll let it slide.

that would be an interesting idea on why maybe big boss may be more mute and a silent character. During his coma Zero experimented with big boss and implanted nanomachines into him, zero is slowly controlling big boss's speech, etc. Near the end of the game Zero goes ape shit with the nano's and puts big boss into another coma, to never waken again until JD is broken in MGS4

Keighly needs to do a FINAL HOURS for MGSV. I need to watch the development of this game, I think there's a BTS DVD in the collector's edition. I remember seeing the Ground Zeroes tech demo and was blown away.

I really liked what I just saw but yeah, I'm not (yet) fully convinced about the open world direction they went with this game either. What made the previous home console MGS's so great for me were the incredibly good pacing between storytelling and gameplay bits and the linear nature of those games which made the overall experience feel very solid.

This game looks pretty fun, though, and maybe this will end up being my favorite MGS, who knows. I'll still probably buy this day one, despite my criticism.

I was only able to watch the first 10 minutes before I had to do stuff but just those 10 minutes of them goofing with the menus (and weapon customization that I loved in MGS 4) and just dropping into the desert and I was re-sold. Can't wait for this.

Couldn't get it to play on PS4 for some reason.

I think you'll be just fine.
It does look a bit Ubisofty.

FACEPALM.

Ubisoft games have no soul , this game does .

I think people are discounting the small touches.

I mean the fact that Your Soldiers have special skills . Like what does a Botanist do in Mother Base?

The fact that If you play Lethally , Soldiers would use shields , or if you are a headshot Tranquilizer guy , they wear more helmets.

If that's possible, time to become the new Ghaddafi

I remember in PeaceWalker you get something special like an emblem for having a full female base. I'm sure the same will happen in TPP.

Gameplay in this is amazing, looks like a blast to play. Love the menu design as well, everything looks so well integrated into the soldier aesthetic.

I wonder if playing as other characters will just be purely a skin, or if there are some things BB can do that the randoms cannot and vice versa.

Also wonder if the girls have slightly different animation.

Talk about being overpowered. But of course, you don't have to use any of that. But it all looks so fun that I definitely see myself messing around with all the options you're given.

I'm sure they don't have the Bionic Arm , I'm not sure if you can call in Buddies as a Generic Soldier . But other than that it should be roughly the same experience.

Boob Physics are confirmed in this game but not sure if confirmed for Female Soldiers.

Are you Sn4ke_911's alt account? Skull F4ce?!

Other characters are weaker for example they can't sprint as long as BB but you can train with them in mother base to make their stats better.

Is it the stream on IGN's site that's causing this to stutter and look choppy? Definitely no 60fps here... looks more like Witcher 3 frame rate. Should I be downloading it from somewhere to get the good version?

Edit- he's inside now, and it's smoother, but there are still stutters where the screen pauses for a millisecond.

Try dropping the res to 720p. Streaming video in 1080p doesn't always work out so smoothly in 60 fps

It really irritates me when people say that Ubisoft games don't have souls. Because, they do, they do have souls etc etc.
No, they don't. They're computer games. Another fella above you said that a piece of digital entertainment has no soul. Wtf is this.

I'm not criticising the attention to detail, which is excellent. But the missions are looking slightly generic to me. Go here, scan this paper, escape, mission complete. Go somewhere else, fulton this soldier, escape, mission complete.
While it looks fun as hell at first, is it still going to be as good twenty hours in? Especially when the focus on story has (apparently!) been toned down hugely, which reduces your motivation to do all these side quests. This is a big problem with Ubisoft games. So much meaningless side content that contributes nothing to the overall narrative.

(and to me, casette tapes don't make up for cutscenes and actual dialogue between characters. They may do for you).

Edit: explained a little more.

From a guy who played the game for 16 hours.

Someone who writes for a website called "Metal Gear Informer" does not strike me as someone who may be immune to over-excitement :P

Journalists are always terrible at video games, this is the rule.

I've always wondered how much this has influenced the easy and simple game design that has taken hold the last decade.

I was refering to the video player but should agree with you nevertheless.

Comparing MGSV to Assassin’s Creed, he thinks The Phantom Pain makes the latter look like a poor man’s open world game, and that unlike AC, TPP has heart.

In Peace Walker, some soldiers had different skills - some were suited to Mother Base and could develop certain weapons, increase morale, etc. Others were suited to the field where their CQC was stronger, they could detect items, disable enemy radio communication, etc. But early on their stats were poor so there's a trade-off there.

I imagine this game will be like that too.

You can definitely feel if a piece of work has soul .

The reason why people praise the Witcher 3 is because you can feel the what the Creators of the game wanted you to experience. How every side quest is unique and every monster has their own small backstory.

The same can be felt in Almost every Metal Gear Game. From Fission Mailed , Psycho Mantis Boss Battle , The fact that they acknowledge that battle in MGS4 if you try to use the same tactic.

Kojima is known for putting insane amounts of detail that make you question , break the 4th wall .

Ubisoft games are made out of generic boring collecting items or tower missions or clear strongholds.

Honestly this is made by the same guy who didn't tell you Raiden was the Main guy in MGS 2 , do you seriously want him to give away anything regards to story or how things play out .

He is clearly hiding something for a reason.

you just replaced one meaningless word (soul) for another (heart), that does nothing to dissuade his fears that every mission in the game is a fetch quest

Now we just need PW style 4 player co-op missions, imagine been able to play as DD :)

I would pay for a 4 Player Co-Op DLC.

I think people are highly underestimating Kojima.

I mean seriously play Peace Walker. The guy escapes from his cell so many times and you have to find him.

The twist is pretty ridiculous but everything has a story point to it.

THIS. Someone needs to update the Youtube links and Post HQ Gamersyde Video when its available.
