[IGN] 40 minute Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain demo 1080p60 - 6/18 at 5 AM PST

The weapon and base customization, the helicopter speaker system, the ability to do missions as other recruits or analyze the skills of soldiers... the game has a lot of customization and sim elements that remind me of some of the appeal I find in games like XCOM, Suikoden, Tactics Ogre. Game is expanded over the other Metal Gears (well, building on Peace Walker) in terms of freedom, customization, and management in a way that on first impression seems almost exactly as how I would have if I was the director.

Looking forward to spending a lot of time in free roam and using all the different recruits, personalizing my army, base, gear, etc.

Another touch I like is the persistent blood... a lot of games do this but after playing Dragon Age INQ with its great persistent blood spatter and then Witcher 3 with none... and previously, GTA V with its rather weak bruising and blood and replaying Sleeping Dogs with its great blood and bruising system, it's really a strong feature for adding a sense of survival and battle to cutscenes.

Was I the only one hoping the jeep engine would rev wildly as it was fultoned?

Overall, the demo was pretty damn incredible. Consider me very hyped.

GOD DAMN, THIS GAME LOOKS SO GOOD
I waited until this Steam Sale to finally try Ground Zeroes and care about MGSV, so I'll be waiting a relatively short time compared to most others.
Man, I'm so excited. Everything looks and feels so radical and fun.

EDIT:
Wait, is there no PC special edition?
I don't have a PS4 yet. :/

Can't wait to get my hands on this.

I'm still in the middle of MGS 2 so I don't want to see spoilers. I watched E3 2014's gameplay demo last week and was hooked (just skipped the short cutscene at the start). This game looks incredible. Is there just a cutscene at the beginning I can skip like E3 2014 or is this demo more story focused?

Reposting for answer.

Was I the only one hoping the jeep engine would rev wildly as it was fultoned?

I loved all the different "ahhhhhhhh!" sounds, but I noticed that even the unconscious people were screaming. There were several little niggles like that I noticed during the demo; hopefully that sort of thing will get polished before release.

Did anyone notice the visual glitching of the smoke from the "phantom cigar" BB was smoking? That was obviously intended. Between that and the film burns, I feel like there must be some meta narrative going on. I don't really want to dig too deep so I don't spoil anything for myself, but I feel like another MGS2 moment is coming.

Hey man! There aren't really any story spoilers in this, but things like potential companions, songs you pick up, guns, etc. are shown. Basically things that are considered spoilers for Smash Bros. and stuff. View at your own risk of course but honestly, not too much of the story has been revealed so far. The trailers are about as "spoiler-y" as you'll get.
Also, everything shown from MGSV so far doesn't really directly spoil anything from MGS2. Based on the recent trailer, I'd say it's definitely possible for MGSV to touch up upon or even expand on some of the themes from MGS2, but without having even completed the game I don't think it'll mean much to you. That being said though, enjoy MGS2! It's one hell of a game.

I think you can hear them wake up as they float. Could be my imagination.

Also: excellent screen name. :)

I don't think this trailer has any spoilers, don't worry. As far as I remember, it's all just showing off gameplay stuff.

the demo is completely gameplay based.

Thanks guys! I don't consider those to be spoilers just stuff like how Big Boss has
a prosthetic arm
but that one is already spoiled. Sounds like it is safe for me to watch.

As for MGS 2, it fell into my backlog but I look forward to getting back to it. It's such a huge leap from the MGS 1 and has one of the greatest openings in gaming. Shalashaska is such a badass.

I'm downloading the video from Konami right now. A lofty 8.7 GB, so it's going to take quite a few hours before it's up on Gamersyde :)

They did talk about it in MGS4 how Zero tried to turn Big Boss into basically a religious icon through propaganda and movies and things like that, so I've been on the look out for all that sort of stuff for a long time since Big Boss is now voiced by a "Tv star/Actor"

Considering the prosthetic arm is LITERALLY on the box art and everywhere, it really doesn't count as a spoiler at this point since his missing arm was basically the first instance of TPP we saw years ago.
But the 40 minute demo is safe from story spoilers yes.

I still find it hard to believe that this doesn't have co-op like PW. Only disappointing thing about this game so far.
While we don't get Jolly Cooporation in this game, we do get invasions that involve launching assaults on people's Motherbases to wreck and steal their shit.

Woah! The IGN 1080p, 60fps video was about 2GB big.

Can't wait, thanks Blimblim!

I bought Ground Zeroes Day One for PS4 but I didn't redeem the code that came with it because you couldn't around that time. Is it now possible to redeem the code or do we have to wait until the game releases?

https://uk.secure.konami-europe.com/link/portal/30031/30044/Article/1963/Can-I-redeem-the-DLC-code-that-came-with-Metal-Gear-Solid-V-Ground-Zeroes-for-Xbox-360-Xbox-One-PS4-yet

TPP release is when these codes will work, I really hope someone at Konami didn't set the redeem code expiry date too short and these all still work !

It is now possible to redeem the code that came with your copy of Ground Zeroes on the Konami Core site, but you'll have to wait until the game launches to collect your special voucher code.

Agreed - and it's unprecedented how good the grass-roots gameplay is as well as the potential for strategy. It's almost like a future XCOM game where, once you deploy your troops, you're playing one of them ala Metal Gear Solid on the ground immadiely.
Fucking hell I'd buy that in an instant.

Also, you missed the best persistent blood splatter in history: Bloodborne. Every droplet of blood lands on your character/the world and stays on your character/the world until you lantern again.

The same reason Ocelot doesn't just translate for Big Boss or why BB conveniently forgot Russian.

Hey, hey. We know he can't speak Russian because of brain damage. In fact, he can't remember, learn or speak any other language except English because of it. This is legit real-world stuff that happens to people with head injuries.

The other stuff though... Yeah

wait.. how come snake doesn't just fulton himself when it's time for extraction..

You can actually fulton yourself if you fulton a vehicle/cargo container while you stand on top of it.

However it just takes you back to Mother Base, and if you're on mission, you'll fail it.

I'll buy this Day One, but i must say i'm not totally convinced...
Like, there's way too much to customize, i know i'll probably end up using less than a half of all of these. And the open-world thing, i admit i would have preferred a more "focused" experience closer to older titles.

The same reason Ocelot doesn't just translate for Big Boss or why BB conveniently forgot Russian.

He sort of can fulton himself.

Ocelot may speak Russian and English, but that doesn't make him a good translator. The people you pick up with the translator skill do so immediately and in real time.

BB "forgetting" Russian is a fairly legitimate plot point (with an explanation) that feeds into both gameplay and the larger theme about language/control.

You're welcome ;)

Sure...

: )

Honest! He may have trouble finding the exact phrasing, might not do it quick enough, or he might have trouble finding an equivalent word on the spot. That's why not everyone who speaks two languages can be a translator. It's a real skill.

You need a complete and thorough understanding of both languages. A mistake on the field could cost lives, y'know!

It really irritates me when people say that Ubisoft games don't have souls. Because, they do, they do have souls etc etc.
No, they don't. They're computer games. Another fella above you said that a piece of digital entertainment has no soul. Wtf is this.

I'm not criticising the attention to detail, which is excellent. But the missions are looking slightly generic to me. Go here, scan this paper, escape, mission complete. Go somewhere else, fulton this soldier, escape, mission complete.
While it looks fun as hell at first, is it still going to be as good twenty hours in? Especially when the focus on story has (apparently!) been toned down hugely, which reduces your motivation to do all these side quests. This is a big problem with Ubisoft games. So much meaningless side content that contributes nothing to the overall narrative.

(and to me, casette tapes don't make up for cutscenes and actual dialogue between characters. They may do for you).

Edit: explained a little more.

Someone who writes for a website called "Metal Gear Informer" does not strike me as someone who may be immune to over-excitement :P

Come on, man. 'Soul' is a euphemism. It's not literal, for god's sake. It's a euphemism for a game having character, vitality, quality and uniqueness. It's an analogy for the ethics and principles behind how a developer has created a game. For example, in Ubisoft games, the ethic is to take really solid gameplay mechanics but then impose this cookie-cutter, same-again open world structure on top of it - which is repetitive, redundant and very, very tired. Like a machine just churning out the same stuff – you could say "soulless".

This is very wise.

My girlfriend is fluent in French – can write it okay and can speak it very well. But she can't translate. Not like this, real-time translation. It's like a third, insanely difficult skill in learning a language. A mix of on-the-spot thinking, creative interpretation, and genuine linguistic understanding of two totally different vocabularies and syntax.

I'm not so sure, but this demo killed some of my hype.

I'm not a huge fan of big firefights. And gosh, where those man came from? more than 100 enemies in less than 2 minutes, in the middle of nowhere. I thought at the end a Metal Gear Ray was going to appear and start shooting lasers at Big Boss.

That escalated very quickly, and not the kind of vibe that MGS has brought over the past decades.

But the rest was amazing, and that soundtrack just gave me Vice City vibes (which is one of the favorite games from Kojima).

As others have said, enemies are called in dynamically from other bases. Those 100 soldiers will have come from the region's main base, which probably has 50-60 guys in it. And there will be 3-4 smaller bases nearby who will also have sent their guys.

Presumably, it's possible to kill every guard in the open world during free roam... How the heck are they gonna handle that? Respawn them when you start a new mission? Surely that'll feel cheap as heck.

Just noticed that the V is two exclamation marks merged into one. Two snakes. 'V has come to' means the two snakes have awoken.

Omfg

See, I used to be exactly the same way. Since MGS1 and Tenchu 1 I've been a stealth purist. No gadgets, no combat, just ghost through every level.

In MGS, as a very last resort I used the tranq pistol.

I've ghosted Splinter Cell 1-3, Thief 1-3, MGS 1-4 etc, and I did the same for Ground Zeroes, too.

But one time I got in a fight in Ground Zeroes and, tired of trying to get the S-rank for so long, I just went with it. I shot my way out of the fight.

And it was glorious. Unlike in practically every other stealth game ever, combat in Ground Zeroes is actually just as good as the stealth is. It's not too easy, it's thrilling, the shooting itself is satisfying and the ways enemies react is fun. I've always seen my playthroughs in MGS as pure-stealth, but now I'll happily play it as an action game, too.

Ground Zeroes is probably the first stealth game I've played where I didn't reload upon being detected. I just roll with it. I still try no to kill people and avoid the pursuing guards but the game's systems are so fun to watch and engage with that I no longer feel like I've totally failed if I get an alert status.

Word, brother

Even just playing TPP as a straight up action game, trying to kill everyone, will probably be an absolutely unreal experience. My god is it September yet

Can't wait to call in a helicopter and illusion my way out of a mission with that those custom cassette tape options.

Someone should make a version of the FOXHOUND logo that's GOB's face with the knife in mouth rather than the dog.

I can't get this out of my mind

The V, because it is two exclamation marks merged, also looks like a Y; the Y Chromosome? The chromosome that is passed from father to son.

I still find it hard to believe that this doesn't have co-op like PW. Only disappointing thing about this game so far.

I was literally coming into this thread to ask if it did. That really sucks. The game is basically set up exactly like Peace Walker, its a shame it doesn't have Co-op.

How heavy are spoilers in the video Gaf?

I'm on media blackout for story stuff but don't mind some mechanics and shit being spoiled.
