I hope we see Xiuying again. Loved her!
Yeah Ryo should've stayed with her and become a kung fu master. Carrying books and catching leaves. Great accomodation in central HK, he could've become rich just on property values skyrocketing, and had the most badass potential love interest.

I feel the same way. Also, I suck at Fighting Games so a Virtua Fighter system is always painful for me^^ I would go for a Devil May Cry/Bayonetta fight system. Third person character action (of course not that much over the top) instead of classic beat em up style (because of camera problems). That way it involves skill (and fits the technique scrolls system) and has less camera problems.

Theres really not that big of a difference other than the auto lock on.

I guess more moves are based on directional input and theres more moves in general but even in DMC forward twice punch is a move.

I just replayed Shenmue 1. Finished it yesterday and I really liked how grounded the VF style combat felt. Made it seem more like real martial arts moreso than your typical combo based action game.

That being said removing the auto lock on and making it a button/toggle wouldnt bother me any and it would most likely make the fighting feel more natural for players.

Do you think there's much chance of current tiers being modified?, At the moment at $120 I'm kind of paying $91 for a capsule toy, don't get me wrong the only way my pledge is changing is if I can afford to give more but if you're not playing it on PC and you're not going for a $3000 plus tier there doesn't seem to be enough incentive to give more than the $29 other than pure love for the series.

I guess that's part of the reason everyone's shouting for Physical PS4 copies.

I'm also in the $120 tier for the capsule but mainly to have my name in the credits hehe.
Its a one and only chance probably. So why not?

i'm on the $500 tier because, well, love of the series. the pledge items are nice though.

if i didn't have an expensive purchase coming up around september i'd be on the 3000 tier and pumping money into the project monthly via paypal.

Nice :)

Good to see fans helping the project so much :)

what can i say? i love shenmue.

kind of an outside idea, but if they do start accepting pledges via paypal after the kickstarter closes, how do people feel about pulling together for a monthly pledge drive?

I'd love to create the official Shenmue III OT but I am really concerned about the amount of time I'd have available to create it. It would be completely badass too and everyone knows it. Question is, when is the right time to create it? After Kickstarter I'd imagine for it is too soon to create one now, right?

They don't want anyone making official threads until day of release, or something like that.

Really? I never knew nor noticed that. Are you sure because it doesn't make sense to me?

Notice how there's no Batman Arkham Knight OT yet, even though it releases in like 4 days.

You could always do a Shenmue III community thread, though. But that might take away attention from the Kickstarter, so I'd wait until it's over.

yeah, this thread needs to be the big central hub for shenmue fans right now. you'd be surprised how many don't actually know yet.

by the way, i think OT threads go live like a week/three days before release rather than day of.

That was the old rules. They changed it to day of last year. I think it was probably prompted by Destiny having multiple OTs before the game had even released. They want to avoid the OTs becoming pre-release hype echo chambers rather than forums for discussion about the game as people are playing it.

i guess that does make more sense

For those that haven't played Shenmue I highly encourage you to get a Dreamcast to pla both games but a few of us at the Shenmue Dojo were commenting how the video under "What's Shenmue" section includes a lot of beta material many long time fans have never seen- http://shenmue.link/us-en/history.html

well shit
why isn't a lot of this stuff on the kickstarter page?
this is what they need to show people who didn't play the original games

that and putting the god damn stretch goals at the top of the page

I used to do annual (or more) playthroughs of Shenmue I + II, but I stopped years ago thinking that the HD collections were right around the corner.

Ironically, they are now probably closer than ever after the Kickstarter success, but I can't help myself.

I ordered a brand new VMU and Dreamcast controller (just for the fun of opening something new for the Dreamcast lol), a Shenmue vinyl skin for the controller, and am going to hook up my custom-painted Shenmue Dreamcast for the first time (with my VGA cable that I purchased about a year ago).

That looks great :)

Have fun replaying the games!

on the subject of replaying the series, i've started my run and it actually makes me a lot more excited for an intimate original shenmue experience for shenmue 3.

I know there was a list of things going around to ask Yu Suzuki during the AMA so can we add if he would consider to continue crowdfunding after the kickstarter is over?

Good one.

I have to go to bed, so hopefully you guys can see that these get answered.

- What's the deal with the other two towns mentioned in the Kickstarter video?
- Can we have some more higher tier Kickstarter rewards, please?
- What do you forecast the final budget to be?
- Will the game have English and Japanese VO?
- Will the original English voice actors return?

- Do you have access to Sega-branded arcade games and capsule toys?
- Can you go into more detail about what the stretch goals actually mean?
- Will you update the controls?
- Will we see a return of some Shenmue I systems, such as lots of interactivity with objects?
- How many developers do you plan to have working on the game?
- Is an Xbox One version out of the question?
- Do you have any specific cost-cutting measures in mind?
- Will the final game be at full price?
- What kind of things have been made easier/harder with technology improvements?
- How have your sensibilities as a game designer changed since Shenmue II?
- How much funding do you need to make a game on the same scale as the originals?
- Regardless of stretch goals what is the minimum number of locations that will for sure be in the game?
- Will the game have a day/night and weather cycle?

Not used Kickstarter before Shenmue, how does this kind of thing work? you can keep paying towards higher rewards after the Kickstarter closes? because I'd be down for that, If the kickstarter ended a few days later I'd have been able to pledge quite a bit more.

Oh, the AMA is 5:30am UK time. Looks like I'll have something nice to read when I wake up :)

Could somebody ask him whether Disc 4 of Shenmue 2 was ever intended to be Disc 1 of Shenmue 3? Wondered this for a long time...

Also, suggest Dreamcast packaging for a stretch goal!

that kind of funding isn't done through kickstarter. usually the dev just sticks a paypal button up on their website.

Disc 4 definitely seems out of place but I'm glad that Shenmue 2 ended that way. I wouldn't have been anywhere near as obsessed if it ended on Disc 3.

KS decided to allow projects to add PayPal pledge options after the goal is met so they could introduce it now. How they are implemented like everything else in the campaign depends on the project since it's entirely external to KS. Some projects might decide to let people pledge or upgrade their pledges after the campaign is done for some amount of time after the campaign for instance.

Others might do that but not add it to the stretchgoals so the game gets finalised. A common way it is done is to let people upgrade throughout the campaign, but finalise the goals a short time after KS is closed since the project plan needs to be finalised before work can begin proper.
KS allows a massive leeway for projects to do whatever they want.

It's my favourite moment in gaming so I'm glad Shenmue 2 ends that way too (well, cliffhanger aside) but you've gotta wonder...

We know Shenmue 3 was being worked on then and when 2 was preparing to release it was known the Dreamcast was dead.
I've always thought they decided to just release as much as they had, perhaps already knowing there wouldn't be another chance.
Disc 4 definitely feels like the start of another game, it's opening mirrors the beginning of 2 and all QTE's have been simplified.
Also now the first footage of the official 3 is a remade event from Shen 2 Disc 4. Hmmm.

Somebody ask him please, put me out of my misery!

suggestion: if anyone runs any facebook pages, or whatever they're called, use those to promote the kickstarter

i'm gonna post it on the dreamcast 2 facebook page every few days haha

Now that's a great question for the AMA.

I've already apologised to my twitter followers about relentlessly posting about this KS several times a day for the duration of the campaign.

I don't use Reddit, mostly because I find it hard to navigate and very cluttered looking. Can somebody post Yu's answers in this thread, please? I might have to go check it out anyway because I'm dying to hear from him, but it'd sure be nice to have all the answers here where I can understand the layout and know what I'm reading.

From a gameplay point of view I could see that, but I think narratively disc 4 makes perfect sense as an ending to Shenmue II, because it's where Ryo finally meets Shenhua. Ending on disc 3 would have meant another game where they'd teased Shenhua without ever meeting her.

So I've had the pal version of shenmue II since release but have never been able to figure out a way to boot it on my ntsc system with vga output. My boot disc for imports apparently won't display in vga output. Is there a solution to this other than buying a pal system?

Gameshark CDX supports booting of out-of-region games in VGA.

Now that's a great question for the AMA.

protip for anyone using facebook pages to promote the kickstarter

facebook will promote your posts to more fans if you are sharing content hosted on facebook itself

example: if you just post a link to the kickstarter and have it pull a thumbnail from the site to go along with the post, it won't reach as many people as if you uploaded a picture promoting the kickstarter to the actual facebook page with a link to the kickstarter in the description

Very true and I think that would've been a step too far, seeing as she's the first person you see before actually begin Shenmue.

It would've brought a neat order to things though...

1 - Begin in Japan - adventure - leave at the end
2 - step off a boat in Hong Kong - adventure - leave at the end
3 - step off a boat in Guilin - adventure with Shenhua - presumably leave at the end to one of the other islands that appear in this Kickstarter

Each further instalment could've continued having you begin in a new place, would've been pretty cool.

Be aware that iirc, Shenmue will lock your saves to your output with VGA, so if you use VGA you will not be able to use the same save on RGB Scart etc etc

disk 4 is also a 'decompression' section to disk 3's relentless action

they did something similar in disks 1 and 2

it's actually really clever. thematically it carries over the kung fu principles of self-reflection along with the physical force aspects
