Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

Has it already been addressed what to do about game saves & DLC? I have a bunch of my 360 games, but hate to lose all my progress. What is the word on how I will play with my saves & unlocks?

I heard with KI on windows 10 everything carries over some how as well, how does that all work?

Put your game saves in the cloud and you can use them on XboxOne.

That's a good point.
And in reading the article, Digital Foundry makes that point, too. Lots of chances for improvement in the months ahead.

.....Has anyone asked the Xbox team if original Xbox (KotOR, Shenmue 2) compatibility is possible - both technologically & fiscally? (i.e. is it straightforward enough that they could devote a team to accomplish the feat while not costing too much to make it worth the effort?)
It is possible, of course. It was possible on the less powerful Xbox 360 with PowerPC architecture (original Xbox is x86), so it is possible on the more powerful Xbox One with x86 architecture.

Am I right in saying you can only play games you have on disc?

So I won't be able to download any game I bought from the store (or received through GwG) on the One?

I would imagine once they are cleared to go if you brought them digitally they'll show up. Like the current digital games do now.

Digital and Disc versions work. As they add titles, the list will fill out with store purchases for you to download.

Got to play Mass Effect last night. Framerates were definitely spotty during combat, but this was expected considering it's still in the Beta phase. For those of you who haven't tried it yet, I would say wait. It's going to be so worth it.

Worth noting if you were an original xbox 360 and owned Hexic since launch you may not have it tied to your account, meaning you will have to actually download/purchase the game.

Noticed it was missing from my list, since I've always had it on 360 I've never actually tied it, via purchase, to my account, so it didn't appear. Once I purchased for free it appeared.

http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-GB/Product/Hexic-HD/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d802584107d1

Even if not, it's a free XBLA game you can play straight away on Xbox One.

Just played Alien Hominid a few minutes and works great. Looks, sounds and plays just like I'm on the 360. Forgot how much I fucking hate this cheap game. Impossible garbage.

I'm installing Banjo, Geometry Wars and Battleblock now. I don't have any discs that compatible yet.

If somehow all of my xbox live arcade and cave games work on the xbone I will be a very happy man but I doubt that'll happen.

Cool..thanks for the heads up.

Don't think being classics has anything to do with it. I think it's because you're from the UK. I think only US discs work at the moment.

Ah right. I assume you mean only US Kameo discs? I installed Viva Piñata from disc alright.

I wish I kept PDZ for the nostalgia.

Going to post a summery of the games I played and their performance:

Battleblock theatre runs perfect for the time I spent with it.
Perfect Dark xbla felt fine too but it's not a game i'm going to replay, was never too fond of it.
Mass Effect has framerate issues due to vsync but otherwise it's working fine.
Super Meat Boy runs 100%
N+ has a choppy frame rate, playable but extremely annoying.

BTW how do you bring up the xbox 360 guide while playing a game? single and double home button taps control the xbox one, what's the method for the 360 overlay?

Press the menu and view buttons at the same time

ah there we go.

It's still early days in this preview for sure, but in my experience mass effect here is definitely not unplayable and that 13fps dip image is not indicative of the overall experience. Silly to post that and suggest that it is what you should expect when playing. In most cases it plays pretty much the same if not better.

Exactly and it will get better come general release and going forward from their.

Weird memories coming back when trying to download games and then going through my Live download history to verify my actual purchases. Wow, I was too cheap to buy the full Zuma? I really spent that much time playing the demo? Crazy.

If you aren't in the preview and you own that supported game digitally you can browse to the game in another user's games list if they've played it and download it through there. It seems shoddy for people though whether it works or not. Better to either wait for the full launch or get into the preview program if you're willing to deal with bugs.

A fellow gaffer invited me the Preview Program, I haven't heard anything yet so I thought I would try this work around. I love trying out new features and tech.

I've just checked on my xbox one and my friend list no longer shows the 360 games in the played by friends section anymore. Looks like they may have closed the loop on this trick after reddit and kotaku found out.

Ah snap, thanks for the info.

Downloaded BattleBlock Theatre and it was working pretty well. I'm an achievement guy though so it's pretty annoying having the game pop up twice on my played games now, one for the original 360 te and another for the X1 tile. Minor annoyance with that aside; the game itself worked pretty damn flawlessly.

"Mass Effect:
As it stands, during both exploration and combat sequences, the game runs upwards of 30 per cent slower on Xbox One with a deviation ranging between 5-10fps at any random point. What was already a sluggish experience on original hardware becomes nearly unplayable at points on Xbox One"

Did any of you spot this? lol

Not sure how many threads you need to post this in. They've said it has frame-rate issues on the preview forums, it is known.

I honestly haven't, but I only played for a half hour or so.

This feature is fantastic !
It is good to play my old Viva Pinata game...And gfx are ok..XBO scaling is very good...

Good job MS...This is a game changer

On the Preview Forums, since the feature is still in beta.
Game Specific Issues

A Kingdom for Keflings: May not use correct avatar when playing offline.

Defense Grid: Pressing the View button will reset the level if pressed during gameplay. If you are trying to call up the Xbox 360 guide it is recommended that you first press and hold the Menu button then press View to avoid resetting the level.

Geometry Wars Evolved: It is possible to start a game before the Xbox Live sign-in completes, and when it does it will return you back to the game’s main menu.

Hexic HD: Corners of locked tiles in Survival mode are not rendering correctly.

Hexic HD: Games that came pre-installed on Xbox 360 will not recognize you as owning the game. You may be able to acquire this game for free by searching the Xbox 360 game catalog on your Xbox 360 console or on Xbox.com.

Kameo: If you receive the error “problem with the disc you are using”, it is the game’s generic error, it is likely not an issue with the disc.

Mass Effect: Framerate degradations in 360 version may manifest slightly differently in Backward Compatibility version.

Perfect Dark Zero: Framerate degradations in 360 version may manifest slightly differently in the Backward Compatibility version.

Perfect Dark Zero: Ranked multi-player is not yet supported in Backward Compatibility.

Perfect Dark: Co-operative multi-player between 360 and Backward Compatibility is not yet supported.

Super Meat Boy: There is a pre-existing bug from Xbox 360 where controller input doesn’t behave correctly with controller 2.

Toy Soldiers: Online multi-player may sometimes get out of sync.

Toy Soldiers Cold War: Existing framerate degradations in 360 version may manifest slightly differently in Backward Compatibility version.

Toy Soldiers Cold War: The first time you launch the game and have no game saves, you may encounter an error screen that states an update to the title is needed. Once you have saved a game you should not encounter the error again.

Zuma: There is a pre-existing bug from Xbox 360 where achievements that should be earned, are not always earned.

It is known so show me where this has been stated before " What was already a sluggish experience on original hardware becomes nearly unplayable at points on Xbox One"?

The original game was known to have various issues as it says, on the Xbox preview forums, they have said it has more issues:

Mass Effect: Framerate degradations in 360 version may manifest slightly differently in Backward Compatibility version.

Edit: My bad, beaten by a long time!

So its not been printed before on Gaf? Why are you criticizing me for printing this here?

It has been posted on Gaf

Criticising? Well you seem to be posting the same thing twice in different threads, like you're looking for some sort of outrageous response to it, or upset no-one replied to your other post about it.

Its known for those testing it there are issues involving its frame-rate, beta software, who knew!

I have been following this thread for awhile, and this BC solution sounds amazing. When it comes out of beta I could see myself building up a digital library of 360 games, and it will happen quickly if there are regular steam like sales on those old games.

It is known so show me where this has been stated before " What was already a sluggish experience on original hardware becomes nearly unplayable at points on Xbox One"?

Well the framerate issues are few and far between in my testing and that it is "nearly unplayable" is completely a matter of opinion. I disagree, I've found Mass Effect very playable so far, going to be arriving at Noveria. That said, this is still in early preview: a beta. People need to chill out - almost everything else works great so far, not to mention that there are framerate issues with this title has been noted in the forums since launch of the feature. That's why, as part of the preview program there is an app where you can specifically rate and mention problems as you find them built right into the feedback app and also on the preview forums section for BC.
