They've lost almost all momentum it seems, and I think it's because of the lack of interesting reward tiers. Bloodstained was the most well-run KS campaign I've ever seen, someone needs to be taking cues from that.
Would it be at all possible to add a stretch goal if reached would bring it to XB1? That might help generate some interest again to help push it over the limit. With Sony's limited involvement is there anything preventing this from happening?
Ehhh, I don't think that's happening.

I mean it could if for some reason the backers spiked, but just because you made a good game on ps2 doesn't mean that you will make a fantastic game on ps4. 10 million is way too much.
There's a good chance that Sony's involvement came with an exclusivity requirement.

After they barely promoted Shenmue 2 on the Xbox which was followed by really low sales numbers, Microsoft was probably not the top of Yu's list of console makers to partner with.Yu approached Sony himself, so it does make sense that Sony is the one helping him. bloodstained had a very active community around it that was supported by the kickstarter staff of the game and the achievements.
shenmue iii already reached its funding goal. if yu suzuki had secretly hoped they would get $8 million to make what he had in mind, he should have set the goal higher.

I've wanted this for so long, but I can't bring myself to back this after the way it's been handled. Seems like it could be a train wreck, but if it's looking good around release I'll just buy it then.
There are pics around with Yu having lunch with MS execs. I have a feeling he already approached them and they refused to provide any support. This just doesn't make sense, as dreamcast fans went to Xbox and Xbox fans got both games, leets put a game out on kickstarter only for PC/PS4 fans. but whatever, I still get it on PC.
There won't be another opportunity. If this fails to receive adequate funds to make a proper Shenmue game, then Shenmue is never happening again. This is your only chance to make it possible to get another Shenmue.I've wanted this for so long, but I can't bring myself to back this after the way it's been handled. $29 US dollars is a lot to some people.
Kickstarter's seem to be very front loaded and back loaded I bet they make over 75% of their money in the first and last couple of days. We saw it with Amplitude, it got off to a great start and looked like it was a sure thing, then at the mid-way it was easy to right it off. Looked like there was no way it was going to happen. Then of course the last few days it peaked again and made it. Shenmue is different because it is "backed" so there isn't that same desperation with making a stretch goal vs. making the game.
Might back the $30 though, it's game I might as well play so I can understand what others are talking about. Is there an easy way to play the first two?
Dreamcast... and finding 2 copies for cheap.
Hmmmm, maybe I'll just find a lets play...
He was being intentionally vague. Before he mentioned the marketing help, he did say they'd "throw some scratch their way." I'd imagine they're helping, Adam just isn't allowed to discuss details
This better happen.

So are the people who made the biggest stink on the original thread here? Where's Littlefang?

Shenmue, uh, finds a way.Oh, It is happening. But if it doesn't get enough it just won't happen the way people want it.
this is the awful result of hyperbolic outrage culture, for those who have been asking whom such culture affects.
From
What I've read I get the impression the kick starter and funds from various sources will find the game dev .. Sony is probably
Providing the funds needed to port it to ps4 and a heavy marketing budget for the ps4 version ... Which makes sense if you consider what ppl are saying about not enough marketing by xbox for s2 ... This needs to sell well for the franchise to have hope . Given marketing budgets are almost as much as dev budgets these days it's def possible yu is lookin at 10 mill kickstarter 10-15 mill other funders and sony porting plus 25-30 mill marketing . That would justify making it ps4 exclusive while at the same time sony isn't really providing any big funding for dev part
You are high if you think that Sony will spend 25-30 million marketing this game. It will be sent out to die with minimal marketing support from Sega or Sony. The game will sell maybe 750,000 units, end on a cliff hanger and you'll be left begging for a sequel for the next 10 years.
I have no idea who this Yu guy is as I started getting into gaming about 3 years ago and don't play many japanese games. I just assumed his most famous contribution is the shenmue series.Weird comment, you're going to ignore Yu's other great games he had made? He was one of the most consistent designer/director's in putting out quality games, but suddenly he'll make a bad game on PS4? Wut?

hahahaha, what? Nobody is outraged. The only things I've really taken into consideration are what Yu himself said and their own KS pitch.
To expand on it.... as a responsible consumer, I really just don't like KS. It's not about the money. I bought Shenmue 1 on DC on release day and Shenmue 2 on Xbox on release day and loved both. If this looks like it's shaping up nicely I'll buy it on release day.
I'm glad this got funded and will follow it closely the next few years.
I can't believe you people actually believe Sony isn't helping pay for this game. Shenmue 1 cost $70mil to make. Does anyone LITERALLY believe they can make a game on par with that, but with modern technology with $10mil?
I feel like if there was a Xbox release coming sites like Polygon et al would have never said a negative word about this. As it stands there are a bunch of bitter people out there that seemingly want to see it fail or not be as successful as it could be. I hope he does hit his 10 million goal or gets close, because I'd like to see his fully realized vision for the game and hopefully get more games from Suzuki in the future.

I think this is what Sony offered Y's net for console exclusivity - full marketing costs and to a lesser extent, some help with their development costs.
this is a good summary of sony's involvementSo, is there significant Sony funding or not? Is the game console exclusive to PS4 or not? We still don't seem to have any straightforward answers and that is a real problem. People can trash Kuchera's Polygon article all they want, I'm assuming out of love for the Shenmue franchise, but it raises valid and important questions. When a Kickstarter game appears on the E3 stage of a platform holder it is natural to ask what part said holder plays on the development of the game.
As I said before, I am not at all opposed to the idea of using Kickstarter in order to secure more funds and bring a niche project to life. However, when you are asking people to pay for a product that they will get after several years you need to be absolutely transparent about a) what kind of product it will be, what its scope will be depending on the amount raised, b) how much money you will need to complete it and c) where that money will come from. From my point of view the Shenmue Kickstarter campaign failed on all three fronts.
During the span of a few days we've heard several different versions about Sony's involvement with the project. At first it was "we just want to help out a friend so we're giving him the stage", then it was "if fans back it we will absolutely make this a reality", which is what got everyone thinking that Sony was heavily investing in the project and sparked the backlash, and now it's "we'll help with marketing and pay for a PS4 version". If I got something wrong please correct me, there have been so many confusing and contrasting statements that I may still have it wrong.
I suppose I am going to be called out as a 'concern troll', the idiotic blanket statement that is lately being used to deflect all criticism and dismiss legitimate concerns. There is an unbelievable amount of hostility being directed towards people who are basically saying "when you are asking for money directly from consumers in order to fund the game you have to be as clear and transparent as possible".
Why didn't everyone say the truth from the beginning? Kickstarter backers will fund most of the development and determine the game's scope, some external investors will chip in, Sony will pay for the PS4 port and some of the marketing. Clear as day. Would anyone have a problem with that? Why did we have to put up with all this obfuscation in the first place?
