AMD Radeon Fury X Series | HBM, Small Form Factor And Water Cooling | June 16th

A few more posts from Gibbo @ OCUK:

On overclocking:

Maxwell is an overclocking beast both on core and memory.

Fury you can't clock the memory full stop and on stock voltage Fury does not clock well at all.

So it will all depend on how much more headroom Fury gets from some extra voltage but right now voltage is locked.

For example a stock Ti which AMD compare against is 1000/1075/7010 clocks. Your extremely unlucky if your Ti can't run stable at say 1200/1400/7600 which gives a drastic performance boost.

...

On temps and noise:

What I like about Fury the most, it runs so cool it's crazy, sub 40c at all times, complete silence and it looks absolutely awesome, also zero coil whine as well.

But yes the card is very cool, so I can't see why voltage won't become unlocked unless of course core voltage could potentially damage the HBM, but I doubt that.

4K performance hint:

Fury X launch is 24th at 13:00 so just wait, go in eyes wide open.

In the meantime I shall try to get voltage unlocked and pester AMD for updates, Fury is a brand new technology and the card could have huge amounts more performance to come from both driver updates and overclocking.

It is also surprisingly quick at 4k, infact the higher the resolution the better it performs, which has to be the HBM.

A staff member then said all the overclocking/voltage stuff is NDA until June 24. No reason to panic yet :)

It's weird that at least right now they're stating that voltage and OC'ing is basically locked down so you can't; they've been touting about how much of a beast it will be.

I'm really disappointed if they did actually lock the voltage. This whole launch has just been one sour taste to another. Long delays on info, long NDA of reviews, locking voltage. Hopefully, for AMD's sake, the grapes end up being sour.

To be fair, voltage being locked for a few days after launch isn't out of the ordinary. Same thing happened with the 290X and Titan X. I expect Afterburner to have it unlocked relatively quickly.

He also goes on to say that there are Fury X's that can do 1200MHz core clock at stock volts (1050 is default).

Spot on.

Right now you can get upto 10% more from clocking I'd say. Add in voltage control that could easily become 20% or more.

Drivers a further 10% with ease I suspect and the Fury could well strike down upon NVIDIA with furious anger.

The 4k performance makes me even more resentful towards AMD for the fact that I can't take advantage of it. I only have an HDMI 2.0 input on my display.

I think this is nothing out of the ordinary actually. Plus remember, the cards haven't even launched yet.

Hmm what's with all the high-end displays with no DP?

DP is the best standard right now.

It's 4k TV's, 4K and "high end" monitors all have DP. DVI has a workaround as well.

I believe AMD's response to HDMI 2.0 was that adapters were going to be released in the summer/fall.

That's in direct contradiction to what the engineers have said, verbatim: "You'll be able to overclock this like there's no tomorrow" and "this card is an overclockers dream".

So I fully expect you'll be able to achieve at least 20% overclocks on this card, perhaps even in excess of 25%.

I think you misread my post since I said it should OC well.

People gaming on High end TV's I guess

Big screen 4k TV's w/HDMI 2.0 are not so "high end" anymore. They can be had for ~$800 now and can handle the full HDMI 2.0 spec.

AMD's response was lacking. There's no proof an adapter is any time near release plus it will be active, probably be expensive and add all sorts of problems to the experience.

That's unfortunate, I guess you have no choice but to get the 980Ti :)

Personally I like the Fury X's rumored upside. The Maxwell drivers are already mature since 970/980 were released quite some time ago, and as recent Kepler experience shows they do peak quickly. A Fury X with poor drivers is already trading (albeit AMD's own chart with some curious settings) with 980Ti, I can see significant upticks in performance with further driver updates.

Cooler is superb, normal gaming around 35c load, sub 40 benchmarking and very quiet.
What. Crazy if true. AMD usually has been good about voltage unlocking (look at the 290 headroom where you can shove 1.4V into it) unlike nVidia where it just stops you.

Kinda excited now.

Fury X is still the same GCN from 2011, so I'm not sure how much better the drivers are supposed to get?

Maybe the question was answered in this thread but what would be the smallest possible case that would accomodate a Fury X ? Would it be possible to stuff the hardware in something smaller than a Silverstone Sugo SG13 ?

DF has their 390x review up. I'd be surprised if anyone was really interested in buying that card.

Wow, I need to read these guys' reviews more. Spot on analysis of the strengths and weaknesses without hyperbole either way. I face palm at most "professional" reviews but not this.

Basically conforms to my thoughts. Although they didn't go as far as I go to declare both the 980 and 390x as overpriced. They even say the 980 is the goto 1080 card. While they probably mean between the 2 compared here, the truth is the 1080 gamer who has a 400 to 500 $ gpu budget should save his money and get a 970 or 290 instead.

Yeah, they recommend the 970 for that price range.

Very good review. The 390X is a good performer but that power draw (and how much heat it will then have to put out) is massive. It's pulling 477 watts under load and as he says in his review, all of that heat has to go somewhere (into your case and then out into your room).

AMD finally has the card to out do the 980 at 1440p and above but at a cost of an additional 100+ watts over what the 980 is pulling. Something to think about.

So at this point I am wanting not only a new video card but also a new boot drive. I've been looking at the Sandisk Extreme Pro series of SSD's and would like to purchase one at the same time as my new video card.

My Newegg preferred account would be ideal for this so I'm hoping that the stock situation is favorable later this week.

Oh noes, those people will have to buy (if it isn't included with their card) a display port to DVI cable which costs 10$

The horror, I tell you.
Hey. You're wrong. Quit spreading misinformation. You need an active adapter that costs $100~ for dual link dvi (1440p/60fps). Jesus.

And those are wonky. I've dropped ~$200 on two different active adapters and they've given me all sorts of grief. Would not buy again.

Would a DVI adapter be fine for a monitor I don't game on?

My setup is I play PC games on my TV via HDMI and my Cintiq is hooked up via DVI for art purposes.

Some interesting info from Gibbo.

"Hi there

I did a test last night, I closed up my case but left the radiator just in the bottom of the case exhausting its heat inside the case, this is a really bad idea by the way, but I wanted to see how hot the card would get.

After running Heaven 4.0 all night, the maximum temperature was 58c and the fan speed never exceeded 16%, starting point percentage for the fan is 15%, so it was quieter than the case fans and I was able to sleep with no issues at all.

Here is a picture, its in a Corsair case with the smoked side panels, so its not easiest to see and ignore the SSD's just randomly hanging in the bottom of case:"

Let me guess.

If I'm planning to game at only 1080p, and I'm considering the 4GB GTX 960...I should probably wait to see what the Nano provides? It'd be stupid of me to not wait right?

Somebody made this.... lol

Funny although fairly accurate satire.

So that's the radiator/fan at the very bottom of the picture? It looks gray. I thought they were black?

Let me guess.

The Nano should be a large step up in performance AND price from a 960. Early rumors on the Nano price are $479, or about twice what a 960 4GB would cost. The two cards really are not directly comparable.

The Nano is not even in the same league as the 960. It will most likely be around the $500 range.

That's the power supply. The rad/fan are probably kind of off-screen, to the right somewhere.

That's a PSU.

Yep, looks like the rad and fan are in the front of the case, in front of the SSDs, exhausting the heat to the center of the case.

16% fan speed though jesus, I wonder what kind of temps/OC we are looking at when properly configed and set to 50% or greater fan speeds.

Gotcha, thanks for the clarification. I probably could have figured that out if I had looked closer at the connections going in to it but I overlooked that. Still, I guess it's sort of cool (pun intended) that you can vent directly in to the case and not cause a lot of strain on your cooling fans.

477 watts for the 390x!?
Holy..

980 needs 294.

Thought the 390 should need as much power as the 290 but has a little bit more power!?
