Bungie defends Destiny: The Taken King's £/$40 price tag (Eurogamer)

1UP Yours-era Luke Smith would have eviscerated this bullshit cash grab that fucks over the most dedicated Destiny players instead of rewarding them. There's literally no reason to not offer a Digita Taken King Collectors Edition for $50 that includes just The Taken King and all the digital goodies.

....still gonna buy it though.

and then people wonder why Bungie does this.

$40….£40…..

Forty pounds. What the hell lol. No chance in hell.

Hopefully this sells like absolute arse, especially in the UK. What an absolute joke.

Well I guess it was foolish of me to expect them to sympathize with players who want the digital extras in the CE but don't want to rebuy content. What a shame because I never buy CEs of games but I was willing to buy this one. I'll just go with the standard $40 edition, but man it kind of irks me how they leave us day 1 players out in the cold with some of this stuff.

I love the game, but I'm done with their scamming schemes. They're too greedy. And I'm talking to my friends into doing the same.

I really hope all this DLC shenanigans is because of pressure from Activision, if not then damn bungie you fell far.

Considering their cash cow of CoD has actually been adding value to their pass for once (new weapons finally in addition to maps and an occasional game mode and new cosmetic gear to earn in AW), I do wonder if Activision is getting blamed for what may actually be Bungie's crimes.

It costs $39 Canadian Dollars as well so we sort of lucked out on this one.

$39.99 CND is $32.46 US.

No tax on PSN either.

$40 for the expansion isn't the problem. I'm fine with that.

It's the exclusive CE stuff that I have a problem with. There should be a way for day one players to get that content for cheaper than $80 (without having to buy the base game and season pass again).

.

I don't mind 40 for the expansion. I paid it already (to take advantage of the 15 dollar rebate promotion this week). I mind what you pointed out. They're fucking over the fans that have been there since day one, and then Luke is essentially laughing at us with his answers. Seriously, fuck that guy.

Tell me more..

Destiny 2 is DoA to me, so I'd like to get as much as I can out of this game.

His answers on the exclusive collectors edition stuff is embarrassing. He is just saying I don't care, if you want those other things then you'll have to buy the game again. Really horrible attitude to have. There's no reason they can't offer those to people for a small fee or maybe give them to people who already have the game and both expansions already.

I'm bias, but I thought Luke's response was hilarious.

It seems like the interviewer was trying to pick a fight with Luke over the pricing. Luke is a freaking developer. He designed the Raids for Destiny. He doesn't design the pricing models. Yet the interviewer was insistent on asking him questions unrelated to his field. So Luke decided to have some fun with him.

You can watch another interview with Luke here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHfq7KY1JU4&feature=youtu.be&t=2h35m38s

He's probably the most direct and honest developer I've ever seen. He doesn't sugar coat anything. He just lays it out.

I'm so glad I resisted buying this game. I hate the way they're going about it, I mean it could be a great game but they want to bleed you dry.

I don't know, it sure sounds like that.

They're avoiding being clear and the thing is out in, three months? Do you really believe that they're going to have the content to justify the price after vanilla Destiny and how lacking the expansion pass ended up being?

I'm cautiously optimistic, actually, about both the quality and quantity of content in Taken King. Partly based on the trajectory on both between The Dark Below -> House of Wolves, and partly based on what they showed at E3, which looks uniformly excellent and very different from what is in the game today. But a more complete inventory would certainly be welcome, especially in the context of the asking price.

Got dayum.

Between this and Gerstmann going in on Destiny during Giant Bomb's live show last week, Luke sure hasn't done a good job of defending their product or the value proposition it's presenting.

Which, in fairness, is pretty much impossible given what it is, and what they've been pricing every piece of content at.

man...that was brutal. almost uncomfortable. I think Luke did a fine job defending Destiny at the time. Jeff wasn't wrong, either. (video here)

However, this Eurogamer interview is quite underwhelming.

The fucked up part is if you combine this expansion and the DLCs that have already came out you get 1 full game. Destiny had 1/2 of the content I expected it to have.

I don't see how the price tag is surprising. All post-merger Blizzard expansions have been $40. SC2, Diablo 3, and WoW have $40 xpacs; Warlords was a $50 xpac. If you are getting as much content in TTK as you did in say Mists of Pandaria, then I don't have a problem with it. That aside, there is no excuse for locking exclusive content behind the requirement of buying the original game again. Just release another digital deluxe version. Heck, even a digital deluxe plus version would be better than having to re-buy content.

1UP Yours-era Luke Smith would have eviscerated this bullshit cash grab that fucks over the most dedicated Destiny players instead of rewarding them.

After playing well over 1000 hours in the first 4 months (before sacking it off once and for all) I think I'm in a good position to say that fucking over the most dedicated players instead of rewarding them is exactly what Destiny does best, so that would be rather fitting.

As for the new $40£40 content itself - seems like what's in the bag is more like the amount of stuff I and my fellow players were expecting from the first two expansions. I can totally see a dozen or so of them jumping for joy at having more stuff to do over and over and over again night after night for another 4 months. If I was still playing I'd be having the CE and re-paying for the fancy arse version to go with my LE, now I might just buy it when it's a tenner, just to have it sit on the shelf and remain unplayed, as a testament to my resolve never to play Destiny again or any of its sequels... because fuck that game.

I have no problem with the price points honestly i paid 89.99 for the digital guardian pack and i have about 12 days worth of gameplay logged into destiny. I without question got my moneys worth and then some.....but my problem is the fact they didnt compensate for the fans who are playing today. How could they not have a system in place to see what fans have been playing since launch and reward them with the collectors edition features?

they are not hiding their cash grabbing agenda with the collectors edition.

I mean... it's for the "collectors"... the players that want everything in the game... the type of players that would buy a bungie nepal shirt just for the shader.

It makes no sense to a regular consumer who just expects the game to feature everything... but honestly... this is the result of the DLC era. It started with the promise of game expansion but 15 years later ended up as game fragmentation... and bungie has made it blatantly clear in this case.

Soooo... who's going to start the petition to try and fix this?

Yeah well I already own the Collectors Edition version plus all the current DLC. If I wanted the new stuff I have to spend 79.99 on stuff I already have plus the new DLC.

I haven't played the game at launch, is the exclusive stuff really a big deal? It just sounds like some fluff to add value to the new version. I mean, emotes?

Haha fucking hell, they have no shame charging £40 for DLC, it costs as much as The switcher 3, which has an infinite more amount of content than this piece of shit game ever will. Fuck Bungie and Activision those money-grubbing cunts.

The fucked up part is if you combine this expansion and the DLCs that have already came out you get 1 full game. Destiny had 1/2 of the content I expected it to have.
And its still not quite the game it looks meant to be. There are signs its on the trajectory to getting there, but its slow going.

It needs a lot of content though, and I hope they do get serious about fully justifying the sticker price. Thats some damn expensive DLC.

Final question on prices -

"Is it also the final question on the emotes?"

I'm not going to mention them again. I can't get them.

"But you can if you buy the Collector's Edition."

I'm not going to buy the game and the two DLCs all over again.

"Ok, but first I want to poke at you on this a little bit."

Poke at me?

"You're feeling anxious because you want this exclusive content but you don't know yet how much you want it. The notion of spending this money is making you anxious, I can see it -"

I do want them. I would buy them -

"If I fired up a video right now and showed you the emotes you would throw money at the screen."

lmao

Wait.. what?! £40?!!! What the hell?

I can understand the DLC being $40 as to be honest that is the normal rate for console DLC pack of this size (it should be $20 not $40!). At least that is what I was expect it to cost. But the $40 to £40 conversion rate is just madness especially at it is digital DLC. There is barely any extra logistical costs or anything!

Why not £30 if it is $40 in the US?!

It is probably decentish value for Destiny players who have spent 100s of hours on the base game but it is kind of disgusting it is almost a way to take them on a ride as they will have to get the DLC to continue playing with friends etc.

The base game is what 35% more then this? I dont see the issue here, I think some are ready to just hate on destiny without reason. game was 69.99 here this is 39. Seems fair to me, there is a nice bit of content in Taken king.

This isn't a defense... They know the situation is fucked up, but they are powerless to do anything about it...

I remember when Halo3:ODST went from being an expansion to a full fledged game, complete with launching at full price... People were pissed, both at Bungie and at MS, but it turned out that there was a ton of value in that package.

Fast forward to today, and it's like Bungie completely flipped the script and sold their soul to the devil... Instead of being pleasantly surprised at how much I got from my destiny purchase, I was shocked at how much I had to spend in order to have a decent experience.

I don't know how much of this is Bungie's doing and how much is Activision, but I do know that the name 'Bungie' is severely tarnished in my eyes...

nekkid

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
Sorry, Bungie, but I hope this falls flat on its ass.

Not sorry.

Already bought the collector's edition. Destiny is one of my favorite games this gen and it keeps getting better. Don't care, the value proposition is totally there for me.

I was always expecting this expansion to cost $40... but I'm shocked it doesn't come with this option:

TTK + Season 2 pass (DLC3/4) for $60

This is also the biggest problem. It's like they're still building it as they go, rather than truly expanding the core experience; as an early player, it's unacceptable that the game still isn't what it could and should've been from the jump, even with positive steps being made.

"Well, we have nothing more to talk about regarding your opportunity to spend extra money in Destiny, other than The Taken King and the three versions we've announced."

Wow...

This feels like one of those quotes that's going to float around for a while.

I hope TTK is worth the price of admission but I'll wait for impressions post release to decide. I'm not blindly buying anything Destiny related after going for the Digital Guardian edition.
