Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

hows Mass Effect running? thinking about doing another play through with this

It's playable. The framerate seems very poor at the moment in some spots of the game and the hacking minigame seems a lot tougher than it was in the original (almost like the inputs aren't happening fast enough to make it a successful attempt) but other than those issues the game runs fine. It seems to load faster than I remember the original loading.

I also can't seem to download the two DLC packs for Mass Effect. It just gives me the error "couldn't download" and that's the end of it. Also, the cloud save storage really needs to be expanded for the Xbox 360 games. That may be a reason why the DLC isn't downloading (although not entirely sure about this).

I actually think it's more doable than backwards compatibility between the Xbox One and Xbox 360. What would be amazing is if they retroactively added achievements (and other newer features) to the original games -- plus created a store to purchase them digitally for people who may not have the original titles.

That's obviously very optimistic, but that alone would almost be as major as backwards compatibility with the 360 in general.

I don't think they'd bother with new achievements, since existing achievements still add to your total gamerscore, not really worth the effort to add the One style achievements. Other features like screenshots, dvr, streaming all seem to work.

It seems inevitable that there will be a separate section for 360 games in the store. Phil even said "Our goal is to create the largest games catalog ever on Xbox - and Xbox One backwards compatibility allows us to do just that."

DLC is not supported right now. (This whole thing is in beta) When it goes live DLC will be there

I got an invite, but so did my girlfriend on the same console. She redeemed the invite and our console is registered but only one account per console can apparently use the program?

Does this mean I can't download my games to try?

I am finding it playable as well. The motion blur setting feels even more jarring to me on XBOne than 360, so I just turned it off. I played through Eden Prime this evening and it was a lot of fun. Just started exploring the Citadel so I'm curious to see how that feels.

bolded has me a little worried but i understand this is a beta thing so i think i'll give it a go.

Yeah, I don't think they would either, but it would be pretty awesome if they did. However, since playing 360 games on the Xbox One still just adds to the separate 360 achievement list, then you're right in that's probably a major reason why they wouldn't do it for the original Xbox since achievements didn't exist yet.

Ahh, that explains it. That's perfectly fine with me since I won't even have reached the DLC by the time the backwards compatibility actually does go live.

I may turn off motion blur as well. I'm actually almost exactly where you are (just finished Eden Prime).

I actually wanted to play the original trilogy again, and so my goal is to do that again on the Xbox One. Granted, ME 2 and 3 aren't supported yet, but I imagine that they will come eventually. It is in beta, so I would hope (expect) it to get better once it goes live. I think this set of games were chosen for a reason -- and I think that ironing out any bugs from these games will probably help Microsoft in general as far as improving the backwards compatibility system to the point where most 360 games should run exactly the same as the 360 hardware. Mass Effect in particular is probably a great game for Microsoft to test to improve the system.

What I'm really wondering though is that since backwards compatibility was added now, what does that mean for games that want or could have used save files for future games? Like if Andromeda utilized some Mass Effect world states from the original (I doubt it'll do this regardless but just as an example), then could that mean that it could pull from the 360 save files now? Just like it would from PC? That could actually now be a unique thing for the Xbox from a console perspective anyway.

Hey so does the 360 emulator only able to use cloud saves /online storage? Does that mean if I go offline or lose my internet connection I can't access my saves? Is there a way to switch to internal storage?

You don't need to use the cloud saves. Each game has a storage selection option somewhere (as they had to deal with this on the actual 360). 360 cloud saves don't even work without gold

Anyway you can move your saves to and from the cloud from the guide -- menu + view

It's currently the only way to get an old save from an actual 360, but you can save on the HDD when playing the 360 game on your Xbox One.

I'm currently playing through super meat boy via the 360 xbox one emulation and when I get a prompt to "select a device" for save storage all I get is cloud saved games, and when I attempt to change storage device via the game menu only the cloud storage shows up. Using the xbox 360 guide for storage management I don't really see any option to change storage device either.
Okay, as I typed this reply I actually took my xbox one offline and my cloud save still worked. I guess it saved to my hdd all along but it was just labeled as a cloud save. Thanks.

Yes, and theses HDD saves on the XBox One then get uploaded into the "Xbox One cloud" like every other game regardless if you have Xbox Live Silver or Gold.

I assume, since the xbox one backs up your save games to the cloud as well have havin a local copy, the same will apply to 360 games?

Yep :) Pretty nice integration, actually, once you have your save.

Yeah that's what it seems like, the 360 emulator creates a local hdd save as well as uploads a copy to the cloud.

On another note I just played through a few levels of smb and the game runs great, it's really responsive and virtually identical to playing on a 360. I did however notice that there is some lag and stuttering, though not on every level, where there is also a slight ghosting of meat boy. I'm guessing since this is basically an emulator beta this will get fixed in the future.

Hi everyone. I was wondering if I could get an invitation for the Preview program. Saw this on Xbox.com:
How do I get into the Xbox Preview program?
The Xbox Preview program is by invitation only. If your friends are already in the program, they can invite you by using the “Invite friends” page in the Xbox Preview Dashboard app.

I don't own a Xbox One yet but I was thinking of my signing in to a friends console till I buy mine.

Gamertag is Rampo360

Thanks.

Since it doesn't look like there will be any ports of arkham asylum and city to Xbox one, what are the chances that they will be backwards compatible soon?

An article talking about the lack of documentation that doesn't apply to Microsoft?

They do have the documentation sure, but there is two things preventing OG Xbox emulation.

Apparently MS were not as strict as they were with the 360 when it came to the DirectX API, and that allowed devs to use some nVidia specific features...

But the main reason is that MS had to pay royalties for the emulation of the OG Xbox GPU to nVidia. I can't see them even thinking of that now.

If the BC remains at the state it is I really don't think this is a way you'd really want to play those games to be honest. And some of the best ones were region locked.

We'll have to wait and see. Hopefully this will be an iterative process where Microsoft improves upon the emulation with each wave of releases, I have no clue how it works. I'm not even all that hopeful the 360 shmups I mentioned will be made compatible with Xbox One. But still, fingers crossed, those games are the only reason I've still got my 360 hooked up as things stand.

And I'm aware there are some great shmups that are region locked, I'm not sure how that's relevant to me wanting to play games I own on Xbox One.

I'm pretty sure the preview program is tied to the console and not the gamertag. You should be able to use it, why not just try it out?

wait until they're actually announced to work.

as neat as this is for me, did everyone just sell their 360's to buy X1's? Seems like people are acting as though there was no way to play these games other than this.

I still have my 360, but don't really have the room for it so its boxed up.
Its more convenient to have everything going through one console, less cables, controllers etc.

I'm trading in my 360 for a Xbox One with hopes that it will eventually have BC for all my titles. I'm not too worried about when it will happen but more of that it will happen. I'd say 90% of my 360 library are exclusives and some are AAA multi-platform titles.
Am I making a mistake?

I very much doubt eventually ALL your titles will have BC. Quite a few, sure, but all or even most? Highly unlikely.

Castle Crashers for one seems quite unlikely to come now that CC Remastered has been announced for XBOXONE.

Exclusives are pretty much guaranteed. Big AAA titles? Maybe. They might want you to buy a remaster than play the original. It's all conjecture at this point. I'd wait until more games are added just to be safe.

I'd hold off....that said, would it be even worth trading in a 360? Would it be the only way you could get a Xbox One?

Sure you could sell it off later if all your titles are compatible, I just don't see it making much of a dent in the purchase price.

Retailers have been offering some good trade in deals lately. Theoretically he could trade in for $175 and get a Kinectless 500gb model for half the price.

I'd get $100 for it at the Microsoft Store. I want to take advantage of this before I ultimately could get nothing for it. This would have been a different story if they never announced BC on the Xbox One. They got me sippin' their kool aid.

If the console has games coming out that you're interested in, why not. But you shouldn't expect all your 360 games to be working anytime soon, maybe some of them, but not all of them.

Well you'd need a Japanese Xbone but maybe you already have one!

I doubt you would actually. The Xbox One doesn't really have any concept of region locking, so I'd imagine that for BC purposes it would accept any region's disc. You could already buy digital games from other regions on the 360 by simply switching to a gamertag created for that region, and now that's not even required... you simply change your console region and the X1 behaves appropriately.

That's a good point, you could probably get around it by switching the Xbone region. A lot of these aren't available online and the BC is in fact region locked but if I remember earlier in the thread, switching the system to a region the disk is supported works so maybe it lets you get around the 360 region lock too.

From what I can recall only US discs (and a handful on PAL exceptions) work regardless of the region of your Xbox One. I don't think changing the system region is actually required for them to play though.

There still are some layers of region protection and I wouldn't expect it to go away in BC.

You 360 gamertag is locked to a region, even though it isn't for Xbox One games and apps.

I'd say go for it... Some retailers are doing some nice trade in deals for 360s... And MS comitted to bring all of their first party titles into the fold (so long as licensing or peripherals aren't preventative).

Your big AAA multiplats are more of a question mark, especially if they are getting remasters, but It looks like several big Publishers are already on board...

there's no way to move a save from the cloud to the X1 right? So those of us trying to play Super Meat Boy with our saves are SOL? Because I'm not starting it over, and it's the only one that is having cloud save problems on the X1

there is no way to move saves from the cloud that I can find. If you click on the save file it just prompts asking if you want to delete it.

Anyone get Banjo Nuts and Bolts running? I tried buying it on the digital store, but it won't let me and says I need to sign in from my 360 (I sold it a year ago).

I ordered a physical copy and it arrived yesterday. Put it in the Xbox One and I'm not getting the prompt to install it or anything. I'm in the preview program, have the latest updates installed, and I got Viva Pinata Trouble in Paradise working with no problem.
