Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

Why? They already announced that they will have a lot of games for the fall available.

What we do in Preview shouldnt matter to the people at gamescom etc.

Why not? It mattered at E3. Announcing popular Xbox 360 titles playable on Xbox One through the BC features would create headlines.

Right now we know a few of the 100+ they promised for the fall. So there is absolutely room to talk more about it.

It doesnt make sense to release it for PC. Microsoft needs a reason to sell the XboxOne to 360/Ps3 users.

Microsoft needs people to buy software from them... The console is just a means to sell software... Remember that.

People who are still on 360 are likely to upgrade soon, and BC gives these people an incentive to stick with MS instead of switching to Sony (because they can keep using their already purchased content).

MS also has another long term goal, and that's getting PC gamers to buy into their Xbox platform on Windows... This is why they are pushing the Xbox Win10 app, it's why they are supporting cross-buy and cross play on Fable, KI, Sea of Theive's, and likely many other games to come. It's why Gears Ultimate Edition will be on PC. Allowing PC owners to buy and play Xbox 360 exclusives is another obvious way to get people into the Windows store...

Whats in Preview shouldnt matter to gamescom ;) And i doubt that they will wait until August to add new games for Preview members. If not this week, then next week probably. For July

And still, allowing people to play their 360 games on PC would be counter productive. Microsofts wants to sell more Consoles. Windows is going to sell anyway, especially with that Free Upgrade etc.

And releasing the Gears UE on PC is a mistake too IMO. But thats another topic.

Did this page just leak the official release month by accident? it says fall 2015 or "this holiday" multiple times except for this one question

http://www.xbox.com/en-IN/xbox-one/backward-compatibility/qa

Q: Does Home Gold work with Xbox One Backward Compatibility?

A: During preview, Home Console content sharing will work, but Home Gold will not. Home Gold however, is a feature we will add before the program launches in October.

Also another question on that, seems like buying 360 games through the XB1 won't be possible at launch:

Q: Can I purchase Xbox 360 titles through the Xbox One Store?

A: Xbox One Backward Compatibility titles are already integrated into the Xbox One marketplace alongside Xbox One titles. They are searchable and available for download, but will not be available to purchase directly through the Xbox One Store at launch.

Nice, gold sharing for the 360..

They probably don't hate the people who want to play their game, though, and this was likely the easiest way to make it available on the bone

It's more likely that Microst publishing the game on XBLA mean they actually don't get a say in the matter.

Again, Microsoft sells consoles only so that they can sell software... If they can sell software on consoles AND on PCs It's all the better ... They simply have more customers..

The consoles themselves don't make MS any money (they probably still cost MS money)...selling Gears on PC is a great move... Because many more people will be buying Gears... Which will boost the Win10 store user count, which will make it more attractive to developers.... Not only does it make sense, but it was a long time coming...

So if the most impressive thing about this gen is playing 10% of the 360's library, then how impressive is an actual 360?

You do realize that number is temporary, right? It'll continue to grow.

They've fully emulated the 360 OS and have wrapped it into a Xbox One app.
Your digital licenses carry over, it recognizes discs, and you can even transfer your saves through the cloud.

It's an amazing feat.

If you can only get Software X on your console, you will sell more consoles and the software...

Its WinWin.

Making Software X available on Console and PC, will make you lose some Console sales... and thats not what Microsoft should aim for IMO. There is already a big gap between PS4 and Xbone.

And i dont think that Gears is going to sell that well... by the time the PC version comes out nobody is going to care.

You are over estimating the importance of console sales.... The Gap between PS4 and Xb1 means very little if Microsoft is also profiting from sales on Xbox AND sales on windows... If Microsoft loses a sale on Xbox, but regains that sale in their PC... They are still retaining that customer... Their installed Base becomes not just Xbox console users, but console users + Those who shop the Xbox store on PC...

And at this point, no amount of Xbox One exclusives is going to 'close the gap'. The main reason people are choosing the PS4 is multiplatform performance. Chasing Sony's numbers is an improbable, illogical and uneccisary goal... They need to make sure people as many people as possible are buying games from them. Merging the PC and console experience is the obvious solution, and they have the software skills to make it work.

Merging the entire Xbox experience together is great. Next iteration of xbox and windows gaming should a more synergistic experience. I expect xbox next to be an uber PC.

I think you underestimate console sales... If microsoft doesnt want to sell consoles, they should simply cancel the Xbone etc
There is a reason why everything is changing with the Xbone, uncluding the BC.

We should get back on topic ;) We are very offtopic.

Basically the Xbox is an experiment using traditional PC RAM as VRAM for a game console.

GDDR not required.

So crazy.

Long term implications by people testing this with games will make PCs into better gaming machines.

They want to sell their consoles to sell their software and Gold subscription. They make vastly more money from people who buy their software for years and subscribe to Gold for years than they do from a one-time console purchase with a relatively small margin @~$350.

That's why I think they'll end up revamping Games with Gold to include a library of 360 games versus the 2 a month thing they're doing right now. Bringing that concept over to PC would be a no-brainer as well, since it's going to be VERY hard to convince PC people to subscribe to Gold on PC. A instant 360 library would help tremendously toward that, as would a 360 store in Windows 10 (considering you'd still need Gold to play those 360 games online). I just can't help but feel it would be very difficult with the variety of hardware on PC, they'd really need to be careful with how they set up a minimum bar for performance, etc. I can see it happening, but not for a few years until the Xbox One is more mature, and after a launch of a 360 store on the One, as well.

Aaron Greenberg just favorited my tweet that original Xbox games should be BC with the Xbox One to create #theultimatexbox - haha

I suspect this is coming. Makes no sense not to, other than that whole royalty thing with Nvidia. At the very least, a digital-only Xbox Originals section on the Xbox One store, maybe not disc support. But who knows, we can dream :) I'm sure the emulator could be a hell of a lot better than the OGXbox-360 one.

I think they'll use Gamescom to announce more BC titles, I don't know if they'll wait until Gamescom to announce the next set.

We aren't of topic, I don't think ;) .... It's all very much related... I agree MS wants to sell consoles, and BC is undoubtedly a part of that... But selling consoles is a secondary goal to selling software... It always has been. Consoles are just a means to and end. Software sales is where the money is made. MS is showing signs of re-realizing that.

I said the same before e3 despite the nay sayers. OG Xbox should be far easier to emulate then the 360.

Emulation is much more tricky then I think you are thinking...OG Xbox has some crazy things to it that make it very very tricky to emulate. There was a good article floating around about this.

man I would get so hype if this happens. and I would get EXTRA hype if they brought back the OG Xbox Live servers too. I can't post this enough, but vote here on Xbox Feedback to let them know that we also want OG Xbox backwards compatibility once most of the 360 stuff is done.

I'm actually, more then the AAA titles, hoping arcade games get attention. I wouldn't mind seeing castle crashers or geometry wars working. My arcade library is what I would want the most.

Some Arcade games are already working ;) Castle Crashers is getting a remaster, not sure if this is going to happen.

Geometry Wars is one of the games in the preview. I was just playing today in fact.

Also, BattleBlock Theater and Alien Hominid HD are in so I would hope to see Castle Crashers at some point.

i received a copy of black ops 2 today that had a o ring scratch on it the xbox one still read it to tell me the game is not available yet so if you have scratched discs they can still be used to download the games when the time comes.

Well that's good to hear (arcade games). I hadn't heard about Castle Crashers but that scenario will probably be a repeated tune. Publishers will weigh whether a remaster is an option.

Awesome.

Got home and the firmware update was waiting to install. Just spent an hour with Hexic and it was awesome how well it worked. Geometry Wars is next and Mass Effect is installing. Can't wait to see if my experience lines up with the Eurogamer analysis.

He should start talking into his mic from off stage so that he finishes his speech in the exact spot he would stop on the stage, only to throw down the mic while not stopping.

Interesting. I'm wondering if they have it set up just looking for the security block with the game ID then contact the server to get the game from there.

It would be sweet if we got to download proper 60hz versions of Original Xbox games. Quantum Redshift being the most obscure game I can think of. Doom 3, Forza and Conker Live and Reloaded being 3 of the more well known ones. Halo 1 and Psychonaughts, too. There were probably a lot more.

Just if anyone from Microsoft is reading this, take note.

EDIT - to clarify, I'm referring to the PAL versions of the games. I'm not talking about making the games run at 60 frames per second(although that would be nice). In the old days, a 60fps game in America would run at 50fps in Europe. 30fps games would run at 25. The original Xbox had the ability to output in true 60hz (PAL60) but for some reason Microsoft stopped using it with some of the later titles. When emulating these games on a 360, you couldn't play them if you were using a VGA cable or HDTV that didn't support 50hz. Should be a non-issue for Xbox One emulation, unless only the European versions have all the languages. Which is the problem Nintendo ran into on the Virtual Console.

that under $5 bin of xbox 360 games at gamestop looks delicious... saw some good ones like ncaa football 2012, dishonored, mass effect 2.

that would be awesome, I am sure it's doable too

I actually think it's more doable than backwards compatibility between the Xbox One and Xbox 360. What would be amazing is if they retroactively added achievements (and other newer features) to the original games -- plus created a store to purchase them digitally for people who may not have the original titles.

That's obviously very optimistic, but that alone would almost be as major as backwards compatibility with the 360 in general.

Tbh may go there tmrw and pick up some games.

wait until they're actually announced to work.

as neat as this is for me, did everyone just sell their 360's to buy X1's? Seems like people are acting as though there was no way to play these games other than this.
