Splatoon |OT2| Prepare to Dye

I started tonight at rank B+ with 80 points, and after many grueling battles and armies of Krack-on and Dynamo Rollers I finally made it!

...To B+ with 78 points....yay.

i've come to the conclusion: for the love of god don't immediately stand around inking our own base when we start. i gotta build special when I die and you've sucked up all my turf

got to b+ somehow basically uninterrupted. i'm doing pretty good now with my aero rg. i tend to go behind enemy lines and screw with their positioning by planting mines and using inkstrikes to help cap points. the aero itself makes it real easy to lay a path or capture points.

man, i probably should've started practicing with charger-type weapons before I reached level 20. getting matched against monsters and I don't know how to use these things...

I think it´s much harder getting from B+ to A- than from A- to A. I had no problem doing the latter, but the former took forever. Specially if you use a support weapon: in A- players know much better what they´re doing and getting into a random braindead team is less common.

Ooh, I love the look of the Luna Blaster!

In other news, I had my last session ended horribly - smugly thought I was going to hit B+, but pushed to B-. Maybe thinking one more go, I'm bound to better this time was a mistake!

Let's talk about weapons and the roles they potentially play. Of course, with 33 weapons on the way that we know about, and maybe more after that, none of this is set in stone. It's more a general suggestion guide for Turf War based off my time with splatGAF and randoms.

For brevity's sake I'll call the three roles, harass, coverage, and support. Of course every weapon can be used in any of these three roles, but with a small team of four, having at least one in each of these roles can increase your chances of victory.

Harassers can include:

The splatter family
aerosprays
zappers
Dynamo Roller
blasters
squelchers
.52 gal
Inkbrush**
Nozzlenose**

As a harasser, your role isn't necessarily to kill the other team, but keep them busy. This means making a beeline for the mid and painting the main tug of war spot, then progressing towards the enemy's spawn. It's also your job to chase down kills and keep the coverage person safe. What your job is not to do is paint the corners or even pick up the slack when time is running down. Your job is to always make sure the main fighting point is in your favor, usually the mid of every map (rig's is that whole T section).

The coverage weapons can consist of:

Regular Roller/Kraken
Splash-o-matic
Dual Squelcher
.96 Gal
Nozzlenose
InkBrush

Coverage is a little tricky. Everyone's gonna do it out of habit or neccessity, especially for a super, but the important thing is to remember your role as coverage and look at the map. As the coverage personnel, it's your job to use your guns superior ability to cover ground and make sure homebase is shored up and entirely covered. Covering a base takes about 30 secs if done properly, by just one person, and then you can slowly move your way to the front, taking frequent looks at the map to make sure all the extra alleys are good. This should have at least netted you one special and half of another, maybe even another if someone was stupid enough to use it on the base that early. Always be watching the map and your point counter; watch the map and look for spots to paint, and watch your counter to make sure what you're painting matters.

And the support can be:

chargers
Squelchers
gals

Supports job is simple, stay alive, keep everyone alive. Support usually has range to effectively keep back enemies and be a living spawn point. Suport should be using the teams ink to get to the best spots to reach anyone or place that needs their ink. Support should be watching where paint is coming from on the map and anticipate the other teams moves, and keeping themselves clear from harm while still doling out some of their own. Great support lays rows for teammates at the start, and cuts off strays before they can break through the line into your spawn area. Support shouldn't ever worry about covering ground until it's like the last 30 seconds, then they should use their extra length to reach as much as possible in as little time as possible. A single .96 gal can turn a game in less than 15 secs with the proper push. Most of all, support should never worry about their score.

With these roles in mind, the most important thing to do at the beginning of a game is role call, especially if you're playing with randoms. My suggestions are based off people's behaviors as well, so while with randoms, you can almost assume what role a person will play on your team, simply by looking at the weapon in their hands. If you happen to have the duplicate of another person, you may be forced to switch to another role just to keep your team afloat.

I main the brush, but only on wider maps like skatepark, rig and dome, with better options for me to bounce off and hide in. Maps like Mall and Depot demand range to keep the heads up from taking your ground a way. I mention weapons being successful if properly utilized, and that's because every weapon is different, and everyone will approach them differently. Remember, all the weapons have hard range limits; arcing will not affect the stream if done slightly, and only jumping really gives you any further length. With every weapon, you want to remember to always use the length of your shot. Arching your shots also helps because the paint shots are individually weighted, this means that gravity has an effect on them, giving you different coverage between a straight shot and a "dropped" shot. Every gun has a different cadence as well, so learning how many steps before swimming, is also something that must be practiced. Remember to look at your map to see how much coverage you're getting, especially when arching your shots.

**These weapons are very special. They do just enough coverage with a very little ink, and with proper technique you can cover whole map sections without having to stop. This makes them great for racking up points. But paired with little immediate stopping power, and the need to mash the button, their real role is revealed. As the annoyer, the brush and nozzlenoses primary job is to be a hyper harasser. This doesn't mean immediately attacking the other team, which is why they're in coverage and support. They have extremely fast ink output, and with the aforementioned inherent thriftiness of its usage, the brush and nozzle should start the match cleaning up spawn. Both make quick work of areas if properly utilized, and can rack up specials while at it.

Once spawn is clean, their second role comes into play, getting into the other spawn. I've found 3 quick bursts while strafing forward can make a great path with the nozzlenose, and the roller function of the brush seems as fast as swimming, plus the added bonus of being able to run through enemy ink means you are small target than can turn on a dime. This also means not pursuing firefights unless forced to, instead opting to run and painting ground that they have to approach. Always find new ground for your battles. Heads up will almost always end in defeat unless your aim is true and they don't have a defense buff. With a brush or a nozzle, I never feel like I'm truly pinned down in spawn as they both move so quickly, the other team will have to be really on point to stop you, or have their support watching for you.

TLDR Learning the roles of the game can help keep your sanity as you'll always know who to place the blame on.

I think I may be addicted to Splatoon. I haven't had this much fun with an online game since Uncharted 2.

It would be cool to play a few games with some fellow gaffers. I am usually on from about 9 or 10 up until about midnight UK time. Feel free to add me NNID - Gilki82, my nickname on Splatoon is G. I am definitely getting better, but probably not as good as most people on here.

Playing with GAFers is a good way to get good without feeling terrible about it. Late UK time is definitely the peak hours for us I think.

Do any other Charger users feel the affects of an off day as often as I do? I was whiffing shots left and right today, putting myself in horrible positions, going 0/X on my KDR, etc. The most consistent Chargers I've seen off the top of my head are Heng and Sendou.

Then again, playing on a 19" SDTV as a charger kind of sucks at times. Trying to hit an E-Liter user with your own E-Liter at max range makes them look really tiny. =/

Did you not see how I was playing today? I had to switch to my blaster. :(

Good read, and my thoughts as well, except that I use football terms, and categorize weapons a bit differently:

Forwards/Strikers - Harassers, or the ones that will do the chasing and being aggressive painting the zone and splatting the opposing inklings. I'll put the ones with speed and aggressive playstyle in this category, such as the Jrs, Splattershots, those with bomb specials, those with Kraken specials, .52 gals, zappers, blasters and rollers (except dynamo).

Defenders - basically the ones that secure the zone with their superior power and range from opponents that try to take over the zone. I'll place the ones that uses chargers, .92 gals and dynamo rollers. Also, those with inkzookas and killer wails are pretty effective defenders as well.

Midfielders - support, or basically playing the role in between defenders and strikers, and with their specials providing assists. I'll place the ones with the echolocators and instrikes in this category, as they are the best support skills for both the strikers and defenders to capitalize.

That is good. Would it be OK to add you?

I'm already completely loaded on my friends list (approaching 100). I have to go through my list and remove people before I add anyone else. There's other GAFers you can add who regularly play though, I haven't gotten much time as of late because of real life commitments. Won't be returning to regular play until early July.

No worries.

I saw lots of 7/1 KDRs when you weren't on my team. That one on the Kelp Dome where I missed you on the catwalk at the beginning and you punished that with an E-Liter to my face immediately kind of hurt. =P
never
... sometimes
... GuySloth is too good at sniper hunting

Don't you just hate that? How dare someone hunt sniper. >=( Seriously, they wouldn't get near you in an ideal situation, but Splatoon can be anything but ideal. =/ That, and certain weapons are great at challenging Chargers.

Finally added my name to the spreadsheet after posting in here and never actually playing with GAFers lmao.

Feel free to add, I'd love to get some games in with you guys/gals ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ

I really wish there was a way to change NNIDs :(

I was surprised that I got that haha. I guess playing with rye made me feel like I was doing bad, he's too good at sniper duels. I missed a lot as well, and most of my kills came from my bombs.

regarding the Luna Blaster
weapon description:
The Luna Blaster is a specialized shooter that can unleash explosive power at close range! Its rate of fire is good, and its blasts cover a wide area, but you'll need the Inkzooka to hit far-off foes. Oh, and the Ink Mines can really make a difference in the right hands, so this set is perfect for veterans!

between the blaster and rapid blaster, I wonder what niche it will fill. It seems to have a faster fire rate than the blaster, possibly with a shorter range but that would almost make it a melee weapon. I'm curious if it still has the 1hko potential

and I already have a pretty good idea of what the range blaster could be like, a slow-firing blaster with increased range that can 1hko on a direct hit but has a much smaller blast range would give it a unique role

The shorter range seems to imply that it's much faster than the Rapid Blaster. I've gotten a bit used to it but I might just switch to Luna since the loadout seems better.

I strongly doubt it's 1HKO. The projectile trajectory looks more like that of the rapid blaster but with the explosion radius of the standard blaster. Which would make it a monster for firing around corners, at least.

Good read.

I really like this observation about the roll call, and thinking about what the division of your team and your opponent team is. Looking at the composition of the opposing team in particular is really important, especially if you're playing a support role. The more range your opponent has, the more stealthy you'll probably need to act. If the opposing team has 2 short-rangers and a Krak-On, and you're playing Dual Squelcher, why would you ever need to approach into their range? But if they're full of .96 Gals, chargers, and Dynamos, then you have to be more sneaky. The playstyle of the mid-ranged and support weapons are completely different sometimes, depending on the composition of the other team.

Space Channel Five weapon drops tonight? Nice. Looking forward to it, and what perfect timing with me trying the custom blaster for the first time yesterday.

Regular:
Arowana Mall & Bluefin Depot

Ranked:
Saltspray Rig & Kelp Dome
Ugg I hate the mall... thanks for the info.

Is there a list of all the clothing for this game? I want to get an idea of how much I have left to unlock and level up
From Daboss:
I modified UncleSporky's spreadsheet for Gear Inventory and came up with this. Sorry that it looks ugly, but I like my color-coded stuff lol. Also haven't really used Excel for these kind of things in a while, so my formatting may be wonky.

Google Doc link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/17KwX7JMF_HGE3ygoZiHIWBIN1RB4Lc6Li4Ynu_ko5B4/edit?usp=sharing

Just make a copy or download as an Excel file or something.

Though it seems Google Docs doesn't like some of my formatting so here is a direct download link: https://mega.co.nz/#!FB8TlCKR!WRDNqFFdQaRcax2rVMy-7ZgrsnCzpP1OOEC_bCp9Ccw

With that, you can enter a check mark by entering in a single digit number in the B column.

I used the info from here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...tFvYXkYGSZGg4AsrTI_2veUlbs/edit#gid=602024490

I may have made mistakes, so sorry in advance.

Hey, does anyone want to add me? I usually don't have many people online, so I go towards Ranked matches. But I'd love to be playing with some of GAF.

nnid: RobotHaus

Also, Luna Blaster is looking choice., I hope they do some additional clothes to get different styles into the game.

Randoms don't know how to deal with gal weapons. It's hilariously sad. Then again, laggy Gal weapons somehow OHKO you without damage up.

Is it lag that does that? I swear I've been one-shot by .52 Gals before.

Also yesterday a Japanese roller hit me with the roller splash through the containers in port mackerel
