Splatoon Raiders announced for Switch 2

I'll be curious what this is, my guess is that it's another expansion to Splatoon 3 and not a standalone game. I'll echo what others have said in that I think the Splatoon formula at its core is underutilized and there is so much more they could do with it. I have loved most of the alternate modes over the years like Salmon Run or Side Order.

This is also just adding to some disappointment with my Switch 2 so far. The only Switch 2 game I own is Mario Kart, and outside of a few moments and areas, it doesn't look any better to me than MK8. Now this is announced, and it looks almost identical to Splatoon 3. Characters aren't any smoother or more defined, environment stuff is still very clearly lower polygon stuff. I know diminishing returns in tech is a thing, but for a brand-new system I just dropped $500 for and an 8 year gap since the previous generation, I'm not feeling any kind of generational "wow" leap from Nintendo's output so far.

They're obviously reusing last gen's assets yeah. I suspect we won't get a really visually impressive Switch 2 game before Monolith Soft and Next Level Games next titles.

also, why do I have this feeling that Nintendo Directs are now dead...
well when everything leaks a week before anyways; maybe this is why.

I kinda bet that Splatoon 4 will be a bigger jump than any of the previous entries, so they need to pad the time between releases with this.

after how similar the first 3 games were they kinda need to find something that changes things up for the 4th one
true. after playing mario kart world online it's a lot more stable than 8 and you can do a lot more while connected online. in the lobbies you can actually see the racers races as ghosts if you find them in the world. i thought that was neat.

Splatoon 4 can have a way better netcode I'm hoping. Plus the ping is really bad too.

Urchin Underpass coming back is really nice though! One of my most missed maps.

There just isn't enough time to make a true Splatoon 4 yet. Think of it like having spin offs of Zelda games in between mainline. Or when Bethesda used to rotate between Fallout and TES. Basically you can reuse tech from the last game in a different way without having to reinvent things. Splatoon is suppose to be a franchise and it makes sense to give it spinoffs like all other Nintendo IPs.

What a weird thing for Nintendo to do. Maybe they want to convince Splatoon fans to upgrade sooner rather than later.

Sure I get it, doesn't bother me. I wonder if they'll take advantage of the added power to do something interesting with the ink mechanics, more complex physics to prepare for Splatoon 4 would be neat.

This looks like this would be perfect for underwater exploration.

Why for last few yrs Nintendo June direct not been till 18th June, considering this is coming 12th they had to put something out and it not like it a brand new game it's just some dlc for splatoon 3

Could this be a single player Splatoon game? Either way, I'm in! Love me some Splatoon.

It doesn't look like it will, but I hope the Switch 2 update of Splatoon 3 will allow for mouse controls. Though that might give Switch 2 players an unfair advantage. It'd still be cool if they offered it.

I played a bunch of Splatoon 1 and 2, but didn't get into 3 as much, mainly because I kept getting shit-stomped by Japanese players. But maybe I'll take some time to get better at the game.

Damn. As much as I like what I saw, my hopes for Splatoon 4 just poofed. It will be a lot longer than I'm hoping for a new game.
As someone who has dumped a fuck ton of hours into Splatoon 3 and absolutely love this series, I want them to hold off on S4 until at least late 2026 at the earliest. I want it to have plenty of time to be fully fleshed out, and have a large set of new maps to accompany it.

I am definitely interested in the spin off, and think this is Nintendo's way of acknowledging the 10 year anniversary of the original game since S4 likely is still a ways off. I am also very happy to see third kits, and the map they are adding is one of the better ones from S1.

I am curious how many improvements they will add to the Switch 2 version of the game. I never counted on too much, because if they went hard on the improvements it would be a big advantage over the Switch 1 players in multiplayer. Single player should definitely get as improved as they can make it though.

people's brains can't fathom that some Nintendo franchises still operate on a schedule that was perfectly normal before budgets and dev times got bloated to the extreme.

back in gen 5, 6 and 7 it was perfectly normal to have a full trilogy of games on a single system, and noone would call it oversaturated or noteworthy.

but now that everything got bloated into oblivion and people expect 1 new game every 5 years, it's hard to fathom for some that Nintendo has a franchise whose budget and dev time isn't bloated like crazy, and which can release games at a cadence closer to how it worked pre-PS4/Xbox One generation.

just to paint a picture here... there were 8 Resident Evil games that released on Gen6 consoles. 3 mainline games, 1 remake and 4 spin-offs.
all between 2000 and 2005
Which are those, though? We didn't get a full Splatoon trilogy on a single console, and in fact, there was a 5 year wait between 2 and 3.
Over 7 years between New Leaf and New Horizons, 6 years between BOTW and TOTK, 4 years between 3D World and Odyssey, close to 8 YEARS between Odyssey and Bananza.

Can they please start back doing new Splatfests for Splatoon 3 then?
I am definitely cool with new splatfests, but I hope at some point the ranked modes will be available during the events. There is only so much Turf Wars I can take during a whole weekend.

There are multiple factors to this though. MKW was to be released as a S1 title, but MK8 sold so well they didn't need to release another one on switch 1. Other IP like Animal Crossing that was definitely the case too. HD game development has been an adjustment for Nintendo EPD as well. What kevboard said about Nintendo Dev costs not ballooning as much as other companies may be true, even if dev TIMES have still taken a while. Most Nintendo games seems to be developed by 100-200 people as opposed to 500-2000 of most AAA devs. I could be wrong though.

I'm not necessarily dismissing those factors, I'm just stating that most Nintendo's franchises have a similar releasing pace to most series out there.
Also, I don't think there are 2000 devs working on a single game outside of Rockstar stuff. When you see numbers close to that amount, it's usually publisher staff (production work, QA, localization, publishing, etc.), something that obviously happens to Nintendo games as well, even if they decide a lot of times to not credit those people.

I believe it is a brand new game though.
Yeah my mistake watched the jap preview and internet was sketchy so took it this was releasing on switch 1+2 as part of update pack on June 12 not just a update for splatoon 3 on June 12 and then raiders is a switch 2 only game

What is up with these textures? Did Nintendo forget that people are going to be seeing these in 4K now? Genuinely looks like a Switch 1 game. Would not be surprised if it was the original target platform and then sometime late into development they were like, ya know what, just increase the resolution and put it on switch 2.

This shot at the beginning made me chuckle. Oh deary me.
Yeah, the game probably started as a DLC for Splatoon 3.

That was out of nowhere.

It's Splatoon so I'm definitely interested, but I'll have to see more. Didn't really get any idea of what this actually is.

Looks like survival game.

Stranded on island, build craft upgrade to get off of it.

Though clearly early in development. Research in underway means could be in pre production.

Skipped Splat 3, played loads of 2. Now that 3 is getting the switch 2 update, is 3 still worth it after a few years? Or should I skip it? Thx guys.

Even though I put on my time with S2 as well I definitely prefer S3 in nearly every regard. The weapons, the special balance, and the maps. The only thing I would say S2 might have the edge on S3 is the DLC campaign, the octo expansion is really good, although I also like Side Order so the difference there isn't that big.

There are still plenty of players, and even at S+ rank and in X battles the queues are generally not that long, although they do vary a bit based on the time of day you are playing. I don't expect that S4 will be out for a good while so if you are getting that Splatoon itch, S3 is a fantastic entry and is my personal fave of the series.

Yes.

And in fact, what you said isn't really accurate.

Splatoon 3 released in 2022.
Splatoon 1 was 2015.

So it's 3 games in 7 years.

Animal Crossing - one game in 8 years.

Sales numbers for Splatoon 3 waned significantly compared to Splatoon 2 in the West. Yes, it still did extremely well in Japan and is doing well relatively worldwide, but there is a sense of saturation in my eyes, and some others.
More like 1 AC game in 13 years. And 2 Splatoons in 8 years. Splatoon 2 is not much more than a Splatoon 1 port with DLC. And only a few of us had a Wii U so wouldn't count Splatoon 1.

I hope it's single player or at least has a major single player component.

Either way, I like this approach of just announcing stuff out of the blue. I hope there's a lot more of that over the next few months.

Remember that? With the tornado motif in the trailer I think it's safe to say Raiders is Project Spiral.

Next on the list: Monolith's Project Legacy.

There was also a codename that was almost certainly the new 3D Mario (SPRed). I'm thinking that's not far off either, since we've now seen all the other codenames materialize besides it and Legacy.

I would say it's very weird to announce through an app but not officially through news outlets. But again, its Nintendo and weird is their middle name.

I'm in for singleplayer Splatoon though
When they introduced the app that's how they introduced it, as a way to introduce Nintendo content outside of Directs.

To be honest I thought it just looked like dlc for splatoon you can decently tell the higher resolution, but like Mario kart world and donkey kong rumours where they started as switch 1 games before moved over to switch 2 , could see the same with this, unless Nintendo wanting to push higher Rez and framerate and do it by keeping switch 1low textures, although would still take this game on switch 2 then Pokémon or Hurle warriors or whatever it is this yr for a release

I do wonder what the graphics upgrade will be for Splatoon 3. HDR and 4K? it's already kinda locked 60fps, but chug does happen esp in Salon Run.

Its a switch 1 game at higher ress. Nintendo needs a few more years to adopt, give them time :)
