Yeah I can't think of a single non-optional boss in FF7 that isn't a pushover. Demon wall maybe.
But when that game first came out I rented a PSX to play it and it didn't come with a memory card. I died to the last boss you have to fight right before getting out of Midgar after leaving the Playstation on all night to not lose my progress, so I will forever hate that motherfucker.

I just got there again. Forgot to switch my materia for the active party members.
Still won, but it was super hard. Forgoing materia actually makes the game super fun.

So Final Fantasy VII was an introductory JRPG that was fairly easy to get through, and had optional harder enemies for hardcore players. Sounds like great design to me.
That's pretty much every FF since 6.
I don't see anybody saying it's bad design, but let's not pretend that FFs, especially in the PSX era and beyond, are challenging games.

this is a terrible false dichotomy, there are plenty of better, more suitable paths to take.
Here are some ways they could keep the ATB in the game, but more fun and realistic.
-Enemies show damage. The more damage an enemy has, the more damaged it appears.
-Able to target specific body parts. Head hits can cause enemies to miss more often, leg hits can cause enemies to dodge less often, arm hits can cause an enemy to do less damage, body hits can cause an enemy to buckle over and lose attack turns.The same effects can happen to your characters.
-Put a greater emphasis on character placement. Not just in 3 rows, but in a 3D space.
-Give different potiions a toxicity cooldown to avoid over-reliance on it.
-Have super versions of each enemy that is a much bigger challenge to kill, regardless of your level. These enemies would scale to your level to some degree and can randomly occur in place of the normal versions.
-Use a mechanic similar to FFX-2 so that chained attacks can cause extra damage, and the same can occur to your characters.
-Different spells/attacks should be leveled up the more you use them for different traits.
-Introduce battles that require more than 3 characters. Not every battle should let you use the full roster, but key fights like the optional bosses and Sephiroth/Jenova should allow you to use your whole roster. This would allow them to make these boss encounters much grander in scale and difficulty.

The issue is that difficulty was the one way the game had to make combat fun.
Easy fights in FF7s ATB system are boring. And the game is ridiculously easy.
I'm confident that whatever they provide, it will be enjoyable.

Pre-rendered environments are so good that they even made dungeons fun to explore, like the PS1-era FF games for instance. There's always a certain level of artistic quality where they're concerned, and you were usually guaranteed some nice eye candy with all the little details and visual flair inherent in each individual screen, as opposed to something like say FFXII, which used fully 3D environments and always had the camera behind the character while he ran around some massively dull looking environments. I still remember that huge, barren desert area with the oil rig that was such a huge fucking chore to get through.
I'd love Remake to go in the same direction as the original and utilise that same kind of aesthetic, but alas, pre-rendered is just not trendy these days. It'll end up resembling something more akin to XV than VII when it comes to level design.

I autobattled until chapter 10 or 11? Then quit. Garbage battle system, dumbed down character stats, pointless leveling system, no real loot/character equipment. Can't believe people are defending that shit.
No, they're saying that if they could choose between a button-mashy turn-based system or a button-mashy action-based system they would take latter. Not that there wouldn't be better alternatives than button-mashy ones. But let's be realistic, since pretty much every FF with a turn-based system or ATB was like that, it's likely that FFVIIR would be, too, even if it was action-based. Main-line FFs just always have been supposed to be accessible and easy.
Aside from the chimera boss in the ice cavern on disc two, there really wasn't a challenging storyline boss. The boss in the Shinra mansion was hard but he was also optional. And, of course, the two WEAPONS.

Vincent is a canon character now, so his inclusion in the REMAKE is necessary.
IIRC you had to open up the safe in Nibel Mansion to get Vincent.

Because that would make the battles even more uninvolving. Mashing the button makes you at least feel like you're actually doing something. Holding all the time is also more tiring in longer battles.

Why do we all keep assuming that optional things will suddenly be mandatory? Have they said as much, or are we just assuming because AC exist now that the plot of FF7 must now be 100% airtight and linear?

If you grinded and got KOTR. Sure. For those who wondered in at 55 without good materia, armor, Super Nova summon owned you hard. Silence, Frog, Poison , Berserk.

Yep. First playthrough I ever did, I didn't know KOTR or Gold Chocobos or other special materia existed. Plenty of the bosses in the game destroyed me because I was underleveled a bit and didn't have all the best materia.
Production costs for two characters are too high nowadays (voice acting, cutscene mo-cap, battle animations, etc.) to make them optional where possibly only a small precentage of players sees the work. Isn't worth the investment. I wonder what SE'll do.

Well, okay, cool, as long as you "feel" like you're doing something, even though you're already mashing and not really making decisions. Keep the illusion strong.
Also...I really don't know what to say if holding a button is tiring. Takes a lot less effort than mashing does.

Balance the ATB to actually require strategy and preparation.
That is a better, more suitable path that they will NOT take because if there's one thing the game won't change is it's difficulty. It has to be easy enough for anyone to play.
The game will be easy, so if it has to be easy, at least do it with an Action system.
Adding difficulty options is also a better and more suitable path to take, but I guarantee you they won't be programming multiple AIs for each difficulty level so that it actually requires strategy. So Action also works better when your difficulty solution is to just increase stats on the enemies.

Yeah it was an easy game. But it was good for a first RPG. It was almost everyone's first basically.
You could get through it without properly mixing materia. Boss health caps were low.

Isn't that FFX? It was fun the first time through but I dun want VII ta go down the path of "oh well this enemy only takes significant damage from guns better swap in Barrett or Vincent!" for every single lil battle in the game ~_~;
I like my turn-based "easy mode" FFVII just the way it is!

I'm not doubting they can't make a good action game but ff7 it's not an action game it's a turn based RPG and to make it otherwise would be a huge deviation from the core gameplay of ff7
I never played a KH game but I did battle it out with Sephiroth in Crisis Core. I liked that games battle system but it really only works for that game. Something like that doesn't work for VII. For the people complaining about characters/monsters standing around between attack they could do like Skies of Arcadia an constantly have everything on screen moving around an crap but it needs ta stay turn-based with the whole team controllable!
Eh. It's been nearly 20 years. If I wanted to play FF7 I'd play FF7.
Frankly I welcome something new and my biggest fear is a weird half measure turn based but not combat system like XII or Xenoblade or every MMO ever. HATE that shit so much. Turn based is fine. I guess. I don't really like it much anymore honestly. I really hope it's action based.
