Her Story |OT| Type M for Murder

Quick question, Mr. Barlow.

Reviews seem to be unanimously praising the quality of writing and acting in in Her Story. How did you settle on the actor Viva Seifert? Did you put out a standard roll call or were you familiar with her work beforehand? Did you test a lot of people?

After SHSM I worked for 3 years as Game Director on a 'big action adventure title'. We cast Viva as a key role in that (after an involved casting process) and I'd spent about a year working with her on that production. When that game was cancelled, one of the biggest regrets for me was that no-one would get to see Viva's performance. So as I was developing this I kind of hand Viva in mind from day one... she's super great.

Wow, I can't imagine working on something for 3 years only to have it cancelled. Any plans for other platforms in future?

Looks great. For those that have played...

Would this be a good game to play collaborative with a friend? Or is a better solo experience?

really liking it (and already figured out what happened im pretty sure), but is there a way to scroll videos?

it keeps saying its only showing the first 5 of X number of videos, how do I see the rest of the videos from that particular topic? or is that just a little flavor text thing and theres only those maxmum 5 videos each time?

solo and talk about it after

One thing to remember about the game, even when the game "ends" meaning you can get some closure and the credits roll, the game to me really doesn't end until you've uncovered all of the videos, which you can keep track of with the database tracker. It's possible to "end" the game and still have plenty of videos to uncover. And for me so much of the fun was uncovering more videos and figuring out how to uncover them.

Just 100%'d the game, couldn't put it down at all until I'd 'finished' the story, which was probably 60-70% of the videos through and took two hours. Spent another hour and a half tracking down the last videos instead of eating dinner because I couldn't stop thinking about the game. The story's a bit smaller in scope than I thought it was going to be from the opening half hour, but I really like what's there, although the structure of the game is intrinsically anticlimactic, as you'll piece together just about everything at 40-50% through and everything after that are either minor embellishments or atmosphere building.

I would recommend the PC version, as the iPad's on screen keyboard subtracted from the atmosphere a tad.

Still, absolutely recommended. Be aware there's an option to turn off all the filters that make it look like there's light glaring off an old, scan-line ridden screen.

Didn't let me go from start to finish.

really wanna get all the videos but its getting hard coming up with word combinations lol

Picked this up from the dev's site
the humble widget lets you pay in USD
, gonna give it a shot tonight or maybe tomorrow.

How long did it take you to just finish the game and also do everything possible?

Loving this so far. Just figured out the
knock code which I've found in two videos. The one where she explains it, I think she taps out "Bye Hannah". The video where Hannah says "Why did I talk about Eve?" she taps out "Love U".

3 hours and I cant think of any other key words, think im done lol.

Can't wait to try this.

On another note, fans of investigation-type games could do much worse than to play Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments. It's a solid leap beyond the previous sherlock title (last testament). It features 6 separate cases that task the player with identifying the correct culprit at the end of each case, and doing so is no simple matter and requires weighing all of the gathered evidence to create the most reasonable explanation for the constellation of clues they offer. As a big fan of golden age mysteries, I'm halfway through and quite impressed.

decided to finish it, missing like 20 videos or less of the 271, I might go back with a guide to get them all for the achievements and just to see all the videos, as the actress does a nice job.

Cool little thing there at the end too, didnt see it coming :)

edit: those that 100%ed it, want to share some of the more hard to find word or word combinations you used, especially near the end? With spoiler tags of course

What a great surprise this has been! Was completely unaware of it up until the thread on here a couple of days ago so it basically came out of nowhere for me. Wow though, really loving what I've played of it so far.
Can't really compare it to anything else I've played before other than L.A Noire perhaps, but my desk is covered in post-it notes atm lol. Really have to pay close attention to what's being said so you can start digging more stuff up and piecing the story together.

Great stuff anyway. Will play some more tomorrow :D

Finished it and enjoyed it a lot. Digging into the story largely on your own terms was a lot of fun, up until the "end" I was wondering whether or not I had all the pieces in place. Props on the acting, it was really solid. ("Fuck!")

I was trying to solve the Knock Code using Morse for a good while before hitting the clip where it is unveiled, I was super confused about why I didn't hear things correctly, hah.

I love that there is a clip near the end with
"Eve" taking a lie detector test and she says "the only question I got wrong was my name? hah" and then later I found a earlier video where the test is starting and she says "my name is Hannah Smith...wait, thats not right"

we need a spoiler thread

edit: I also liked that for a minute there I actually thought
they were twins, but no, shes just batshit crazy :p

Overall, very well done! I think I have a good grasp of it, but still a bit confused. Was more like opening a puzzle box than putting a puzzle together, not that that's a bad thing.

I need to find the rest of the files.

I'm almost positive they are twins because otherwise she wouldn't have an alibi. Eve really was in Glasgow at the time Hannah killed Simon

And yes we really need a spoiler thread haha

they're not, theres videos where both of them describe walking into the house exactly the same. videos of "eve" saying she always saw hannah like a reflection in a mirror and "one day she waved back". And the alibi is meaningless, there is never any prove that it held up, she says to the cops "i hit a taxi" but we never see any account of this taxi, she gives some bullshit route looking at a map, and mentions going to the hospital and says "you can check the hospital" and we never know if they checked or not, we do know from later videos they are looking into her for the murder.

plus like I said when eve takes the lie detector test and says her name is hannah, and then thats the only question she got wrong, yeah because shes bananas and really thinks shes eve at that point. its vintage multiple personality

they had the same diseases, the same periods, were both infertile (except we know she wasnt afterall), one time one lost a tooth so they she says they had to remove a tooth from the other, its all in her head. Also when she says their first boyfriend, eve was the one that fucked him while hannah was the one who dated him, because hanna was the shy personality, eve was the dominant one. not to mention the whole "we kept eve in the attic" thing. And hannah had a "apple and snake" tattoo...you know, as in adam and eve? :p

Bought this after reading the Kotaku article.

Sounds a lot like the Paper Trail missions from Infamous Second Son - a very detective do-it-yourself AR game. Very much looking forward to making time for this =D

Plus another example, Hannah is asked if she's ever cheated and she says no. Then "Eve" is asked the same question the following day and she says "You asked me that yesterday".

To add to that,

One has a tattoo, the other doesn't, one had a bruise that miraculously healed in one or two days which they remark upon. Plus a bunch of other foreshadowing.

you NEVER see eve with her arm exposed in order to see the tattoo. and you never see eve in the time period when Hannah has the bruise (the dates are there for a reason)

yup. theres a ton more examples.
They shared every boy until Simon, who she marries and wanted all for herself and doesnt need eve anymore for balance in her life. Except she still went out as eve sometimes to play guitar. Which is when simon saw her one day and met "eve". Eve also says that Simon was determined to prove they were the same person in one of the videos. Etc. And the whole thing isnt even about the murder, we know she did it by the end, its about the baby Sarah who grows up to be the player character and just wants to know why her mom was such a nut case lol (thats another thing, they are both pregnant because only 1 exists :p)

God, this was so good.

My favourite thing (not related to an individual clip) was
hearing a keyword, thinking, knowing, you'd get one thing, only to have that shot down and an entirely different thing revealed
.

Need sleep, but I want to go back and get the last couple of clips...

It looked to me that only Eve had the tattoo on her arm. When Hannah has her sleeves rolled up it doesn't look like any tattoo is there and it's rolled up pretty far.

Also I took "Eve" describing walking into the house as showing that they rehearsed that. As it was exactly word for word

Also there's documented cases of identical children that have really odd similarities like you describe. It's not that far beyond the bounds of plausibility

I think either perspective is plausible though

Hanna is the one with the tattoo. You think its more plausible that since they were 5 years old they managed to live a secret life, hiding a sister in the attic without their parents knowing etc than she just being a multiple personality nutcase? and they met once they in their 5th birthday they realised the reflection waved back? come on now :p

And what would they be rehersing saying the same thing if eve is blaming hannah for the crime anyway?

The tattoo is a bit confusing, there are vids days apart where she has it then doesn't and she claims she got it a while ago as Eve I believe, so if they are the same then maybe it is fake.

How come one of them has a tattoo and the other doesn't then?

There was also the story from one of the vids, where the mom catches Eve out of the attic, and tells her to get dressed, then she goes in her room and apparently swaps with Hannah who was dressed, which amazes the mother. Though this can't really be verified because it's from her perspective.

It's hard by design to get a answer on anything, since she is an unreliable narrator. Everything she remembers, is properly alternate to fit her story. It makes no sense, how they could keep the twin game a secret. At least the people in the school would have notice. Or the parents having a neighbor with the exact same looking child.

I still don't get the motive. Was Hannah shocked as Simon gave both Hannah and Eve the same mirror? Didn't got a clue, that Simon know from her mental illness. Was this is way of helping her, what just at the end backfires and have him get killed?

By the way the character's reflection on the screen is scary looking ...

The mirror was supposed to be uniquely crafted and symbolic of the unique love he has for her. Giving it to another person cheapens it and her mind the relationship

Although to be clear that's not the motive for murder. Sounds like she broke the mirror when she was upset, they got into a fight, he started hitting her, and she grabbed a shard and swung as self defense and ended up accidentally cutting his throat.
