SHENMUE 3 kickstarter (PC/PS4) - FINAL DAY - NEW KS RECORD GO GO GO!

I'm getting a little worried for the campaign. Bloodstained never went as low as Shenmue did yesterday. The fangamer group did an awesome job to keep people interested in the kickstarter with all the castle stretch goals and achievements. The Shenmue stuff seems boring in comparison and it just keeps losing steam. Something drastic needs to happen for it to reach 10 million.

You're drunk if you ever thought this had a hope in hell of hitting 10 million.

We never got Shenmue 3 prior to this because it didn't sell that well to begin with, so it's not like this Kickstarter is going to have the massively insane casual appeal to hit 10 million.

I've been dying to play the original two games again, shame my Dreamcast is thousands of miles away from where I currently am. I guess I will have to live vicariously through some HD screenshots

Holy shit, i mean I know tricks have been used to clean up the image and up the resolution, make it 16x9,etc, but those are seriously beautiful images. How is that game from 15 years ago?!

I'm not sweating the numbers. I've waited this long for a Shenmue III in just about any form I could get. Game form is, even if it's not as fleshed out as it potentially could be, about as close to answering my dreams as it can get. I'm just glad it's not anther text based Japanese dumb phone game or an Asia region only mmorpg. I'll take what I can get, I donated, but I'll take more if more is offered.

Well, the start was very promising. Of course it was bolstered by a reveal at a press conference, but still. The drop-off has just been huge, more than your typical Kickstarter. It makes you wonder if the campaign is being handled properly. Considering how the stretch goals seem to be set up they were expecting (or really hoping) for way more than 5-6 million.

Some of those images aren't in-game. They have been touched up with Photoshop. The last one has had realistic looking leaves added to it etc.

Yeah. Maybe 5 million.

That's the reason it was heavily frontloaded. I mean, it hit 3.2 million in two days and .4 the following six.

Any SGs they don't hit will be included in the Sony Backup, I figure.
no, no, and no again.

we've been over this. sony's help extends to marketing (psn, psblog, maybe some conference time) and helping develop the ps4 version (probably providing dev kits, tech support, etc)

the stretch goals are there because kickstarter money is needed to fund them. there's no safety net.

As already mentioned some of the screens, particular environments are renders and credit must go to Master Kyodai.

Still the game I think in many respects still looks very good and the emulated version really shows how well some of the various characters were modelled. Here's a couple more for the new page:

so i just had a moment in shenmue

ryo is kneeling in front of a virtua fighter capsule machine. it's after dark, the streets are empty, and it's raining. try after try he just can't get an actual virtua fighter figure, and just keeps getting junk.

that's how it's felt to be a shenmue fan for the last 14 years.

lan di's robe is an amazing piece of texture work. crazy how much effort must have gone into that for him only to be seen a handful of times over two games.

Yeah. It's crazy how well the game has aged graphically. Its stellar art direction has a lot to do with it. Around the time it came out, the only games that could rival with it were Final Fantasy X and Metal Gear Solid 2. Both came out later than Shenmue. So for about 2 years, Shenmue was the undisputed graphics king.

All kickstarters are heavily frontloaded -- and backloaded. other big gaming kickstarters have proven this time and time again. Another million over the final 2 days would't be remotely surprising (and is probably on the low side).

But the time between now and then will determine a lot, and for that matter influence the size of the final push.

-throws my hat into the ring for a Shenmue 2 for £50-

Cheap, I know, but that is my highest offer this year!

Just gotta convince a sucker to part with it. :P

I gotta get another Dreamcast because the connection slot for controller one is loose, and also it keeps getting loading problems while changing areas/scenes.

Bleh was hoping to throw in my old guide for Shenmue 1 when I sell it but cannot find this thing for the life of me. Cleaned out my entire room looking for it lol. Guess one of my brothers friends grabbed it... or I gave it away. Something. Fun to replay without it though.

And after all these years... Still got a thing for the yankee schoolgirls smoking on the corner lol. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EuI4JM5Ad0I

explains so much about my taste in women now that I'm an adult lol. see avatar haha.

Shenmue influenced me aswell.

Not much in women...well maybe some parts...but it made me love seeing new places and getting a view into a new world...

...and Lucky Hit. Probably the start of me loving to gamble on other games.

EDIT:

Dear mouldyk2012,

anjijems77 has sent you a £85.00 counter-offer for the following eBay item. You have 48 hours or until the listing ends to consider the offer.

Mate, Shenmue 2 aint worth that much yet!

And here it is:

There have been many questions concerning Shenmue 3’s budget and what outside sources will be added to the money collected through Kickstarter. I apologize for not having been more forthright in this area and would like to take this opportunity to help clarify the situation.
Ys Net and I have been putting in many long years trying to find a way to bring back a sequel that so many fans have waited so long for. After learning of Kickstarter, I knew it would be possible to get Shenmue 3 started. Wanting to make the best game possible, I also knew that I would have to look to more traditional means to obtain all the funds that would be needed to create the game I had envisioned.
Sony and Shibuya Productions have been wonderful partners because they believe in Shenmue and want to see the best for the fans and the game. Their investment in (and support of) Shenmue have helped to realize a sequel that will stand proud with its predecessors. While it is not business practice to discuss the specific details of such arrangements, I can say that with their assistance on the production and marketing end, and in Sony’s case with some publishing support as well, Ys Net is able to use more of the money we collect through Kickstarter purely for Shenmue 3’s development. It is also important to note that your funds are going strictly to Ys Net for development of Shenmue 3 – Sony and Shibuya Productions are not seeing a cent of your Kickstarter dollars.
The outpouring of support from all of you, the backers, has been so inspirational. I cannot thank you enough. Having reached our funding goal, I am excited to say that the Shenmue story will go on, and our journey with Ryo and Shenhua will continue. Fans will be able to enjoy the sequel they have waited so long for, and newcomers to the series will be introduced to a unique gaming experience.
Of course, like with any Kickstarter, additional funding will only help us make a better game. On top of everything Shenmue 3 will already bring, the Stretch Goals that I have laid out will add extra quests, events, and new gameplay systems that will make the game even more immersive and take the series to the next level. At the $5 million mark, there will be an all new gameplay feature I would be excited to be able to add to the Shenmue legacy. If we should make the $10 million Stretch Goal, a much larger, completely open world will be yours to explore.
Even if these Stretch Goals are not reached, Shenmue 3 will already be a sequel true to its name, and one we can all be proud of. It is my hope though, that together we can make this Shenmue just as revolutionary as the first two were.
I understand this statement may by late in coming. Going forward, we wish to be as open as possible concerning the game’s development. I would like to again ask for your cooperation and support in helping make Shenmue 3 the best that it can be.
Sincerely, Yu Suzuki

So from my interpretation, Sony will be publishing the game on PS4 (which explains no physical version for PS4 Kickstarter funds, to keep the funds separate).

Yu might have just made me raise my amount...but not yet. :D

Everyone! Give Yu your money!

If so than that is pretty damn unfortunate. A physical copy would go a long way in getting extra funds and having to kickstart and pay for a physical retail release copy is a pain in the ass if that is how this is going to go. At the very least they need to start accepting paypal if they aren't going to make physical PS4 releases.

It's pretty cool that he made that statement. It seems like he is pretty content with the fact that they have simply surpassed the funding goal.

So in reality, the stretch goals are just to make the game even more awesome in scope. I feel like we should definitely continue to help spread the word, but after reading that I feel like we shouldn't be worrying so much about it. This definitely shows that Sony is not really putting towards development. But it seems like he's got other investors.

I definitely want to see the game reach 5 Million, though.

We should all tweet Shu about possibly helping the kickstarter by supplying physical copies. I did a couple days ago but only got one favorite, lol.

I haven't been able to keep up with the thread too much but have there been any other ideas brought up on how to spread the word? Twitter stuff can only go so far.

Just got my craigslist Dreamcast lot including Shenmue, night to myself, grape pop and vodka...

hqdefault.jpg

Must get my own DC and games out of my parent's loft on my next trip home. Emulating really isn't the same. A VGA cable too would be a wise investment. SCART would feel like a downgrade.

Didn't we all of this already? Am I missing something here? :P

Nothing massively new in any of that. Morons will still make semi coherent YouTube vids about Sony getting millions in KS funds for themselves and game "journalists" will rant on sites about "ethics in games funding". :rolleyes

It certainly is. His model went through a few revisions (see early Saturn footage). Actually someone from the Dojo found another beta model in the games files which you can find here (Obviously modded his model over Mark's passport segment).

Yu Suzuki update about Shenmue 3's budget and Kickstarter:

A must read!

Copy pasting his message so everyone sees it! Here comes the wall of text! :P

Are the character models final? I hate to be a dick but those look nothing like the original models and have very different features. I understand that some parts of the engine would make rendering them the same way as the previous games quite difficult but the difference between the artwork, the original models and the new ones is just too great. It feels like there's an almost complete disconnect between them.

I haven't been able to keep up with the thread too much but have there been any other ideas brought up on how to spread the word? Twitter stuff can only go so far.

We badly need a popular gaming person to start promoting the campaign or have a funny video of some sorts regarding Shenmue III go viral if we're going to see a boost in funds. Something big needs to happen! : (

Hopefully $30 on the 3rd brings in a boost....

Did you missed that message under the pictures ?

Everyone says that. Every single publisher or developer that posts images, videos, demos of his game will put that message to try to keep people interested in their product in case of any serious backlash against it. I understand how happy people are that the game is being made, I am one of them, but that argument as a defense is almost completely mute.

At least in regards to Ryo, Yu stated he did not like the model shown and will create a better model.

Suzuki said he's not happy with the current Ryo model, and the final one will look like the one he envisioned in his mind, so basically like the older Ryo.

Link to that statement please?
It's in the Reddit AMA, but I don't have a link handy.

I really wish they would have gotten the face right before the campaign. I hate seeing the current abomination whenever I check the Kickstarter. Even though it's a minor thing, it really gives the impression that this will be a poor man's Shenmue (even though it won't).
