Bungie apologizes for Taken King controversy, CE items to be sold separate

Yeah, I'm confused. What does the $20 pay for?
Previously, the digital items exclusive to the CE required invested players to purchase content they already owned (the $80 CE came with Destiny, The Dark Below, House of Wolves, and The Taken King) and there was no other path to get the emotes, shaders, and class items.

This upgrade pack no longer requires players to purchase content they already own - you can buy TTK standalone (40) and the upgrade pack (20), and are getting the equivalent of the digital TTK CE without the old stuff you (presumably) already own. This solves the root cause of the uproar over the CE.

People are free to take or leave that pack based on whether or not they value digital stuff that highly, and I'm sure people will manufacture what outrage they can over a $20 pack of digital goods, but this is a good change.

you think they would have added a ship or mount. $20 for emotes and shaders isn't worth it in my opinion
That's the beauty of it...

You don't have to buy it
He basically said it was for Guardians just starting out. How many people are using those exclusive level 6 vanguard armory weapons?

But watch one of the emotes be a white picket sign that says "lfg?"

This is like paying 10 bucks for a tiny hot dog in Central Park. I'm having a hot dog! Hey can I have some mustard? Oh it's two dollars more? Sure! Thanks buddy

I mean, it might seem pricey, but it is what it is. I think he made the situation right. It's honestly on consumers to decide what they will or won't buy at this point.

Not too long ago, I made the argument that "vote with your wallet"...wasn't really a great solution. It's often suggested The problem with that solution, is that the majority doesn't always vote with their wallet when anti-consumer practices are being done. The majority doesn't always keep things in check. The majority sometimes values instant gratification, and takes shitty customer service. That is why we have laws to protect the consumer. Or at least why we should have laws and regulations.

Leaving it 100% up to the consumer does not always work. Because the majority sometimes will keep spending. And just because they are supporting it, doesn't make it right. Or make it so it should exist. Which is why I've always thought people coming together and using their voices, and making loud noise (albeit, not being an unreasonable insane mob) is much more effective.

Because if there is one thing I've learned, companies do not like bad press or PR. They fear it. They almost always fold up quickly once consumers start making noise, and they start to get bad press over it. Why? Because they care about their image. They don't want their image becoming damaged, and eventually the majority starting to accept that image. And that CAN happen. It has happened in the past.

Anyways, that is what I think happened here. I'm glad that people voiced their concerns, and showed Bungie how upset they were. I'm glad that they didn't just "vote with their wallets", since people already lapped that shit up.

The only thing that would be better is if this was the old days at 1up and Luke would have saw someone do what he did. Holy crap it would have been funny on the podcast on how he would have ripped the guy apart.

But even in those days he loved Bungie. It shows today when he doesn't have to pretend. So now he works at a place that has sadly turned completely egoistical and they obviously know better than any of their customers. You have to be told that the way you were selling this was unfair? Think about that. They actually thought we were that dumb. This is not a typo. Not 'oh I didn't see it that way because we thought this'. No. We were just lucky that he screwed up big time at an interview and Eurogamer stood tall and didn't let it slide.

For a big place that has just one product they sure are taking some gambles on turning themselves into a big empty building.

Poor Luke. He's solid guy, a genuine gamer like us. People who didn't know him, didn't speak to him were insulting him personally, wishing horrible stuff to happen to him and for what? He's blunt and gives it to you straight. That's what we should all want instead of the flowery prose of PR.

I enjoyed Luke back on the 1UP podcast, but he came off terrible in this interview. I realize what he says is the PR speak, but that never comes off well from the development side.

Wait, so they're separating the digital goods from the CE into their own thing, but the problem is they're still charging the $20 premium that retail is but you're only getting the digital stuff as opposed to digital + physical stuff you would at retail? I've confused myself at this point with the different versions.

Yeah $20 is waaaaay too much for this amount of content.

The stuff in that image is literally the same price as one of the first two expansions (the second of which is actually worth the price). How is this supposed to be okay?

If you have the first set of Collector's Edition content, this should be free. And then sell this for like... $5, maximum.

Good on Bungie for trying to correct the situation, but I imagine that Activision has a role in this as well. I'm not sure how much Bungie can change the situation, but it's good to see they are doing something.

I apparently misread this. I thought they were trying to be able to sell the expansion as a whole for $20. lololol

"We're sorry. Please pay $20 to accept our apology."

fuck video games

Lol

Semi-unrelated but this reminds me of everytime I see people thank videogame companies for making games.

Yes, thank you for allowing me to give you 60 dollars/euros/pounds/whatever

No word on wy the F a $40 = £40 conversion being used?

...and I guess the apology is £20 too.

This cmpany lost my business for life, I swear.

Jesus Christ.

So what's the total cost of all the Destiny content if you have been keeping up with the game since launch. Surely it has to be up to $300 by now right?

I think people will rightfully compare the content included there against each DLC expansion ($20 each) or weigh it as one third of the original vanilla game's cost ($60).

For those interested in this The Taken King is now $60, for the upgrade, on top of the $100 or so spent so far by day one buyers.

And that doesn't even include a year two season pass.

Good luck with that one, Bungie.

"We agree wholeheartedly."

You didn't as of the interview a few days back.

I guess it's something, but $20? You've learned nothing.

Unfortunately, this plays out like Bungie management was none too pleased to read that interview. Lukems got made the sacrificial lamb on this one, it seems.

Not that I blame them, but like he said anyone who knows Luke can pretty much guess the snark tone of his responses in that interview. They should have sent a PR person or rep with media training to that. It was a no-win situation for him to address the pricing, when those decisions were obviously done above his level.

Any idea of when you'd need to be lvl 30 by? Is it by the launch date of The Taken King? I got over Destiny a while back at level 23 and am thinking about getting the expansions to try to get up to 30 for some exclusive gear. Wonder how much time I have to do so.

This is amazing, they werent aware there was an angle left to exploit their foolish userbase until they complained about it. Congrats on Activision and Bungie, they found a fanbase willing to put up with this, they cultivated it and now they are ready to hunt some whales.

$20? $20?! That is the most ridiculously hilarious thing I've heard in awhile. It was LESS offensive when they said it wouldn't be available to other people. I have to be reading that wrong or something, because the high high end of a crazy price for a few digital items like that would be like $4.99.

They don't give a shit about their fans. I can't believe they thought this would satisfy any one. All about them Benjamins baby.
