Bungie apologizes for Taken King controversy, CE items to be sold separate

Bungie, lord knows what happened to you from the Halo 3 days but you're absolutely off your rocker if you think this alleviates anything.

Fuck right off guys, good luck with Destiny 2 in a year and a half.

This is why no regular person takes video games seriously.

The mental image of someone waking their electronic avatar about and being proud of their "rare" digital armor as if it's a badge of honor makes me cringe. Everything about reach word chosen there is so awkward.

And it's all to deflect from the real announcement of $20 more into Bungie's pocket.

when I first read this, I was like "oh good on them for making the expansion $20 instead of the ridiculous price it was"

then I kept reading and realized I misread it. are they seriously just putting up some CE garbage for $20, which should be the price of the entire expansion to begin with

Previously, the digital items exclusive to the CE required invested players to purchase content they already owned (the $80 CE came with Destiny, The Dark Below, House of Wolves, and The Taken King) and there was no other path to get the emotes, shaders, and class items.

This upgrade pack no longer requires players to purchase content they already own - you can buy TTK standalone (40) and the upgrade pack (20), and are getting the equivalent of the digital TTK CE without the old stuff you (presumably) already own. This solves the root cause of the uproar over the CE.

People are free to take or leave that pack based on whether or not they value digital stuff that highly, and I'm sure people will manufacture what outrage they can over a $20 pack of digital goods, but this is a good change.
I think this is the first time I've ever seen you have a bad opinion. :p

Hm. Guess I'll put it back in my wallet and continue to not buy Destiny DLC.

This seems like a fair change in my book. People who want the items can pay for them. If you do not want the items, you do not have to pay for them. It sounds like there will be other things coming for long-time players, so even better.

"We're sorry. Please pay $20 to accept our apology."

fuck video games

I dont really have a dog in this race but damn if I didn't laugh out loud at this post. I don't even understand why they're charging people at all when those are the people who stuck with them through all the shit storms and such. I think it costs them more in the long run to charge people than keep the ones that didn't walk away from the game.

Pricing an emote/class item/shader pack the same as House of Wolves or Crota?

What in the fuck are they thinking..

This is exactly what the principle at the school I work for does for punishment to kids. He gives them a really extreme punishment, they complain about it he comes back and gives them the real punishment which suddenly doesn't seem so bad, they thank him for it.

Goddamn, why did Bungie become such arrogant bastards? I haven't bought Destiny yet (no Xbone/PS4) and definitely not in a hurry anytme soon.

Understanding all this shit is like figuring out a puzzle, but if I get the gist of it... it still seems pretty shitty.

I dunno. I look at Dota, and a cosmetic arcana for a single character is $30. It's optional, and it's probably more than I'd pay, but that's up to people to judge for themselves. The difference is that now people that DO want it are able to get it without rebuying things.

If people want to pay a boatload for meaningless "prestige" items, who cares? The value is a separate conversation and is different for everyone, but they very specifically addressed one of the biggest criticisms of the CE (and THE biggest to come out of the Eurogamer article that started the shitstorm to begin with).

Indeed. There are people who wouldn't pay $80, but there are people who will pay $60, and Bungie can now add all their sales to their revenue column.

So its $40 for the Taken King and and $20 for the extra content.

How is this different than just buying the $60 game with all the dlc?

What was in the extra content to warrant the $20 price tag? People keep saying emotes and shaders is that seriously all!?

Emotes, shaders and class items that grant bonus XP when leveling, I believe.

The value balance is completely out of whack. According to this pricing, Destiny, The Dark Below and The House of Wolves are worth $20. I paid $80 for it all at launch. And right now each expansion costs $20, or $35 for both. Or $60 for the base game and the two expansions.

Yet somehow some shaders, emotes and class items cost $20. Somehow the new expansion and the shaders, emotes and class items costs $60. The price doesn't add up.

It sounds like you've got a self-loathing problem to work out.

As for the post from Bungie, fuck those people. Do they not interact with people frequently?

I thought one of the complaints was that you couldn't buy the collector's edition content without rebuying the whole game. Now there is an option and they're getting hated on for the pricing of what was intended to be collector's edition exclusive content, right?

I guess they're damned either way, then.

Charging another $20 on top of an already overpriced expansion is their idea of fixing the situation? How gracious of them.

Luke's apology was sincere, and I'm glad they put it out.

Among the problems presented with the CE situation were the price parity with the physical edition despite not having any extras over it, and the implied $20 price placed on a few digital items. This solution does not address either of those problems. Yes, people can now buy the items, but pricing them at $20 just puts how little value is actually there in stark relief. The response should have been a price drop on the digital CE, to compensate for the lack of physical items, and then to sell the digital bits for the (lower) price difference.

This does nothing to alleviate the feeling that Destiny players are being taken (no pun intended) to the cleaners for content.

The the "expansions" that sold for $20 seem like a bargain next to this.

Taken King + its extras = a full priced game. Nope.

They are selling a couple of shaders and emotes at 1/3 of the price of a full retail game.

Seriously, fuck Bungie and fuck Destiny. I am so glad I dropped this game after a week.

So are they devaluing the collectors edition then? What is the desired outcome? To get the bonuses that people pay for in the collectors edition for free or to get a version of the collectors edition that doesn't come with old content?

I am not trying to be facetious, but if they want stuff to be exclusive to one edition, what's the big deal?

As I understand, you still need to rebuy the whole game to get the expansion.

Lol. Ok buddy.

Seriously, when people make video games a part of their self worth or identity it makes me cringe.

Because de $60 version don't include the CE items.

So, if you buy the $60 version (Destiny + TDB + HOW + TTK) you have to pay more $20 for shaders, emotes and class items.

Here's the full layout on all the PO stuff for this.

Considering all the money people spend on all that cosmetic stuff in Dota people will absolutely eat it up. I got destiny on sale and will get the $40 expansion. Just don't care for all the add ons

Maybe. Did anybody misinterpret his points and intent? Or is this just an apology for phrasing?

I have no bone to pick with him, and think he deserves the benefit of the doubt, but that apology sounds like "sorry you got upset".
