Bungie apologizes for Taken King controversy, CE items to be sold separate

$155-$160 (depends if you got the season pass or bought the dlc separate)

I was thinking Australian costs since I don't really know how much special editions and additional dlc costs in America.

Because getting both the Collector's Editions of the core game and the Taken King will cost around $120 each if you want it day 1. Plus the season pass and all the other added bullshit will probably add up to a total of $300. Holy shit, it must suck liking Destiny.

So its $40 for the Taken King and and $20 for the extra content.

How is this different than just buying the $60 game with all the dlc?
Because Headstart. They probably figure if you are just buying Taken King and the extra content you have the game for a while. Giving you a advantage over newcomers

This wasn't the fix I was hoping for. The description is pretty confusing but it sounds to me like in order to get the exclusive items and the expansion it'll be $60 for those that already own TDB, HoW and Destiny.

Jesus Christ.

So what's the total cost of all the Destiny content if you have been keeping up with the game since launch. Surely it has to be up to $300 by now right?

£145 here included TTK and this bonus tat, using digital store prices, which is about $230 US.

Yep, $230.

Look at what Destiny offers. Look at $230.

What value!

Okay yeah, now that I have gone over all of the initial outrage and came back and read the apology and compensation thoroughly I have come to the only possible rational, levelheaded conclusion that may be reached here...

Fuck Bungie.

So their answer to their shitty initial decision is to only mug the loyal consumers for 20 dollars instead of 40? A company that isn't full of shit would just give these things away to the people who already bought everything on offer. To hell with this company.

$20? $20?! That is the most ridiculously hilarious thing I've heard in awhile. It was LESS offensive when they said it wouldn't be available to other people. I have to be reading that wrong or something, because the high high end of a crazy price for a few digital items like that would be like $4.99.

Not even the high end of cosmetic nonsense.

People asked to buy the collector's edition content without needing to pay for the whole package. They offer the option - the mathematical difference between the 80 dollar version and the 60 dollar version - and people are complaining it costs too much. It's totally optional vanity content.

I dunno. I look at Dota, and a cosmetic arcana for a single character is $30. It's optional, and it's probably more than I'd pay, but that's up to people to judge for themselves. The difference is that now people that DO want it are able to get it without rebuying things.

Yeah, I don't actually think the pricing is too ridiculous in a vacuum. Actually, scratch that: it is pretty absurd to pay 20 bucks for 9 cosmetic items if you think about it, but divide that price up and it's roughly in line with how these kind of items would be priced in a game with a cosmetic shop. Like, if Bungie had just randomly said "by the way if you're a die hard super fan and want to pay 20 bucks for some stuff, well, here you go" and put this up on the store one day, I don't think it would have really caused nearly as much controversy.

But... given that Destiny is a game that has cost around 100 bucks if you have kept up to date with it since launch, and also given that the anger surrounding this whole thing has centered around the fanbase disagreeing with Bungie's valuation of content, this misses the mark by a wide margin to be considered an apologies. Apologies generally don't cost twenty dollars.

That being said I think Luke Smith's statement was a good apology. The announcement of a 20 buck apology download... not so much.

We’re actively working to make the digital content from the Collector’s Edition available in a $20 upgrade bundle

This thread is going to end up worse then the other threads on this subject. 20 dollars. Holy Shit. It's like they are trolling us. Also I had a bigger problem with Deej then Luke Smith for his asinine eBay comment. No apologies or nothing from him. Unreal.

I bet they try and charge £20 for the upgrade.

They honestly don't get it. They didn't agree. Deej with his smart assed ebay comment last week.

So, for TTK (£40) + the 'upgrade' (£20) it will cost (probably) £60

£60 to $$$'s = $94.

Really Bungie?

Also, Kudos to Luke. I've never seen/heard his stuff so it's appreciated that he apologised. The threats/personal insults towards him are/were bang outta order though. Doing so achieves nothing.

The CE content should be added to the next season pass for year 1 players only. That's a valid hook, and it shouldn't add a dime to it.

The option to buy a few cosmetic items as $20 DLC is laughable.

After this and the red bullshit stuff, I'm reconsidering sticking around. There's too many other choices coming down the pipe to let Activision fleece my wallet.

Maybe. Did anybody misinterpret his points and intent? Or is this just an apology for phrasing?

I have no bone to pick with him, and think he deserves the benefit of the doubt, but that apology sounds like "sorry you got upset".

Editing to catch your edit: I don't think that's what he says, at all. I took it to be an unqualified apology for the whole thing.

Reading my interview with Eurogamer and imagining it came from some random developer of a game I love - that random developer looks like an Asshat.

But that Asshat was me - and those words rightfully anger you.

I'm sorry.
There's no mincing into "sorry you are upset".

It doesn't really read like they know why people were upset or understand the basic premise of the problem they invented.
"I'm usually like this so it's ok, especially if you're part of the fanbase."

$20 is far too much for some shaders, a bike, and class items. $10-12 would be better.

$20 upgrade for cosmetic stuff is too much. It should be for far less than that.

That should just be part of TTK.

Bungie is insane if they think that TTK is worth $40 and that these little extra items are worth half the price of their xpack.

Apropos to Luke for his apology/clarification, but the 20 dollar upgrade seems a bit out there.

The CE content may not be 'exclusive' to 'new' purchasers any longer, and that's good, and you save 20 bucks, but that SRP seems....fairly high.

Although, if there are class-xp bonuses in there, that could justify some of the worth in terms of timing spent per dollar, to be fair.

That, and the 'didn't do you justice' feels....super rose-tinted glasses about the whole thing, but nothing to be done about that, I suppose.

So if you look at the digital CE now, it's $80. Taken King is worth $40 and now we know the shaders are worth $20 meaning the base game and the dlc is worth $20 as well?

Why?

Trying to spin $60 (TTK + this new option) as something that was done for the players is bizarre and insulting. It's still massively lacking as a value proposition and the fact that 3 class items, 3 shaders and 3 emotes costs as much as an expansion pack is ridiculous.

Good move to apologize from him and good on them to add options at least. Still think everything about this sounds way overpriced but that's just my own view. If they can get away with charging those prices to the playerbase then good on them, full speed ahead. I think they handled themselves well here.

So instead of adding that content to an "expansion" that's lacking in overall content, they are asking gamers to pay even more? Fuck you Bungie and Activision.

"I'm usually like this so it's ok, especially if you're part of the fanbase."

$20 is far too much for some shaders, a bike, and class items. $10-12 would be better.

The bike isn't even included in the 20 dollars. That's free if you're a VIP or whatever.

I'm sorry but even that is ridiculous. Considering the contents of a $60 copy of Destiny that stuff should be no more than $2,50 and even then I'd find it a rip off, an insult to Destiny buyers and I would never buy it.

Damage control. The damage was done long ago though. They aren't really saving face by this announcement imo. As others have stated, they are overcharging for these extras.

What is the $80 version and the $60 version? There is no $60 version that comes with The Taken King. The Legendary Edition, which is $60, comes with the base game and the first two expansions only. So the $20 difference between that and the Taken King CE includes The Taken King AND the digital collector's edition items (and the physical collector's edition items if you get that). That makes the $20 price for only the digital items look even worse.

The price might not be fair, but it isn't ridiculous. PS4 themes are like $2, and they do actively nothing at all. Assuming they were to sell everything here piecemeal, they would charge 1.99 and no one would bat an eye. Which makes it just shy of $20.

Poor Luke. He's solid guy, a genuine gamer like us. People who didn't know him, didn't speak to him were insulting him personally, wishing horrible stuff to happen to him and for what? He's blunt and gives it to you straight. That's what we should all want instead of the flowery prose of PR.

Additionally, Publishers always set content price. Bungie wanted ODST to be a cheap expansion. Microsoft turned it into a full retail release. I imagine Activision is no different for Destiny.

This website does that every day to games journalists. He shouldn't get off any lighter because "he's a nice guy" but we really shouldn't be selective with who we rip to pieces.

So for 20 dollars you get dance moves and shaders. The entire House of Wolves expansion pack was 20 dollars. Wake the fuck up Bungie.

I'm pretty vocally opposed to Destiny as a whole but good on Bungie for addressing this issue. However small this seems its still important as it's obviously stirred up a bit of anger.

If there are emotes I can earn in the game (probably) there is no reason to spend the $20

No one is telling you to spend the $20

Considering all the money people spend on all that cosmetic stuff in Dota people will absolutely eat it up. I got destiny on sale and will get the $40 expansion. Just don't care for all the add ons
At the same time Dota 2 is free, so people willingly spend large amounts on cosmetics to support the game. When people are already complaining about how poor value the game is this sort of pricing just makes that worse.
