Warner Brothers suspends [new] purchases for PC version of Batman Arkham Knight

I'm curious if this is the first time this has ever happened. Has a developer ever just gone, "oh god our game is screwed right now" and stopped sales just to fix the game before? Seems like this is a first for this.

FFXIV off the top of my head. But I don't think it was because of performance issues.

Just imagine the pressure retailers put on Warner Brothers. “You god-damned make this right, or no one will ever pre-order any game ever again!“ Which we probably shouldn't.

Unprecedented move...especially since 98% of my current playthrough was JUST FINE. Game is extremly far away from any sort of "unplayable state", but they thought that their customers deserve better. So... MAJOR kudos to them.

Right, I guess the two threads with more posts than the OT documenting the numerous issues were full of people making a fuss over nothing...

You know now that the smoke is finally clearing a little bit now, I'm starting to realize.... I'm actually really looking forward to this game. I've gotten so used to seeing it as a piece of busted crap these past couple days I forgot that under the tech issues it's probably going to be pretty awesome.

Right, I guess the two threads with more posts than the OT documenting the numerous issues were full of people making a fuss over nothing...

I still don't understand why anyone anecdotally sharing their tolerable / problem-free experiences with the game is immediately met with some kind of accusatory tone?

Eh? For real? The game got taken off sale for being broken. No kudos.

Sorry, but I am NOT giving props to them for this. This is damage control.

They knew perfectly well what they were releasing and did so anyway. There are a lot of people who are stuck without a refund because not everyone bought it on steam or third parties that support this practice.

I still hate the slight PR spin they gave to this announcement, like trying to smoothen up the fuck up.

I myself did not pay for the game on PC, got it for free with my GPU, but I really don't see how this is a reason to give them props.

This would not have happened if they had done their work propperly.

Yes, I'm salty.

In the last few years Ubi, Blizz and EA straight up released totally UNPLAYABLE games on PC and almost never bat an eyelid when their communities went apeshit.

You are having a different experience than most other people. So am I. My experience has been GREAT, but it's not like people are making up issues. Check out Salsa's videos for example. The port is a disaster overall.

Even though we seem to have gotten off lucky, most did not.

WB has great quality control. ;) Almost no one noticed that the collector's Batmobile is shit and they had to pull the edition at the last moment and no one noticed (or cared?) that PC version will be almost unplayable for most people.

This is the best thing they could have done IMO, I will buy it as soon as its fixed instead of waiting for a sale to show my support.

I cant believe nvidia made drivers specifically for this game. Like someone played the pc version, optimized some driver code, and said ya, plays real nice on nvidia! Serious incompetentcy from all angles.

This whole thing only emphasizes what we've all already known, amd that is publishers will willingly release broken games.

There's no way in hell they didnt know this game was broken well before release day, but they kept up the charade and avoided early detection. They just hoped people would buy it anyways and sweep it under the rug like other poor ports. Then only bring it back up when they have promote their next game and use the previous game as a promise of a lesson learned and reassurance of quality for the new one.

And they would have gotten away with it too, if it werent for those meddling Steam refunds and consumer ratings.

Pc gamers have an additional way to express their dissatisfaction now with Steam refunds, and it hits publishers where it hurts: money. Its not just a theoretical one either, like lost potential sales. It is a literal view of sales gained then taken away.

It's not that, it's the assertion that the

Game is extremly far away from any sort of "unplayable state"

suggesting that everyone with problems is majorly overreacting. It's an inflammatory statement and wilfully ignorant of the substance of the problems people are having.

Other people in this thread have stated they can play the game fine without also insulting everyone else, and they were treated just fine.

yeah it's been working out pretty well for me so far on PC, but i recognize if there's this many complaints it's gotta be a mess of a port overall (plus i didn't enable gameworks...just to be safe lol)

I'm kind of bothered by how many people are blaming Iron Galaxy and/or Rocksteady for the port. Yeah, they made it, but it's WB who decided to publish. Do you really think anyone at the developers wanted to put it out in its current state?

Don't blame the developers, guys. Blame the publisher. Remember MKX? Another WB PC port, different studio, also bad. That points to a pattern of WB not giving the porters enough time and/or resources and putting out a subpar port anyway.

Always blame the publisher.

Read what the person wrote again.

It's not he anecdote itself that's the problem.

I appreciate the attempt at nuance but to me this is just a silly shell game that the games industry plays - whenever the publicity is good, we're supposed to love all parties involved equally but as soon as there is controversy we have to decipher the credits and decide who to take to task.

Nope, I'm not going to do that - there are three names on the tin, Iron Galaxy, Rocksteady and Warner Brothers and until somebody with inside knowledge corrects me, I'll hold them all equally responsible.

Just imagine the pressure retailers put on Warner Brothers. “You god-damned make this right, or no one will ever pre-order any game ever again!“ Which we probably shouldn't.

The retailers don't worry about the PC version. They don't sell it for the most part, and would rather sell retail versions anyways.

DD games with a retail presence tend to have the most problems, because the PC versions get rushed.

I blame all of them equally as well, but Iron Galaxy has built up enough goodwill that I'm willing to write it off for them as a major screwup and not indicative of what I'd expect from them qualitywise. WB not so much, due to MKX issues.

We don't know exactly what happened between them. Small teams have achieved great things before, and huge teams with massive budgets have screwed up before. For all we know Iron Galaxy had the capability to make a decent port but genuinely screwed up or wasted time. We have no idea.

And quite frankly, it's not the consumer's responsibility to care. Our end of the bargain was to simply attain the product legally. The parties involved in delivering that product in a respectable state, failed to do so.

I've oversold myself in job interviews before. I've taken on tasks that I knew I wasn't quite qualified for. In some of those instances, they bit me in the ass. However, regardless of the situation and fault, I always manned up and took responsibility for them. I made no excuses nor did I want/expect anyone else to make them for me. That is being an adult, that is being a professional.

Everyone involved in delivering this product screwed up, one way or another.

Delicious. It would be even better if people didn't pre-order and then didn't buy the game either after scathing PC reviews. However, as that kind of consumer behavior is likely never to be reached with this (but really most) consumer base, Steam Refunds is just about the next best thing and it's doing work!

I feel conflicted

I got a good price on the PC version

But the PS4 version will probably be better anyways...

what to do, what to do

I guess that's down to how much of an arrogant twat they're being when they mention it.

Just wait a bit. If no (insightful) news comes out by next week, then pc gamers are probably in for a long wait.

Then just get the PS4 version so you can enjoy the game, because by the time the NEW pc version is out, you may already be invested in other games.

They decided to backtrack on their shitty QA because they misunderstood the concept of "the internet". So I won't congratulate their "honesty" because if it wasn't for steam refunds I think they would have done exactly jack shit about this.

On the plus side, turns out that people power (or more specifically refund power) can make a difference.

Now WB, go fix your game properly. And remember: we are watching you.

First time I heard of something like this... but hey, I guess it at least means they acknowledged the major issues and are planning to do something about them.

maybe the company doing the port said it was working fine

Maybe, but WB really should be testing it for themselves, especially since they were in this exact situation with MKX earlier in the year with High Voltage.

A major publisher cannot, for the second time in so many months, push something out they've not tested from an external developer.

This whole situation is terrible. It's embarrasing they released this in the first place - did no one check the game before it was out? At least they're doing what they can, now.

It's possible that they decided to ship it and then just patch it later (not uncommon on PC), but were surprised by the number of Steam refund requests.

Pure speculation on my part, though.

It's also possible they made the decision to ship it in it's current state before Steam refund requests existed.

*chuckles*

Seriously, especially big publisher don't give a shit, they just apologize and patch afterwards.

I'm guessing they do know. They have to know which copies to send to reviewers/how to work their embargoes.

People are giving them props for this?
WB knew the port wasn't ready, but they shipped it anyway... Simply delaying the PC version would have reduced the size of this shitstorm...

It's such an empty apology too... If you 'take these issues seriously', why did they make it past QA?

More like this, but probably, yeah, especially since they didn't recall the box copies.

I was almost sure this port wasn't going to be fixed, since usually patches address only very specific and obvious problems and performance is improved only marginally so that the outrage would stop and further fixing is forgotten afterwards.

But this time it looks WB are serious about the issue, props to them.

I'm a big Batman fan but even I know to wait until the dust is settled instead of playing this game.
60fps or bust, the PS4 version is currentlybetter but not good enough.
I need to downsample and go BEYOND.
It's always smart to wait for the goty edition of WB games.
This year there are enough games to keep you entertained and let you forget this and next year you can get everything for a fair price and I'm sure it will run great then.
QA of WB games is pretty bad (on pc), they probably rushed und highly saved costs on the pc version.
I wished that they've learned their lessons after Asylum and City (release was bad, Goty is excellent!)...

I can't give them props for pulling the game. Yes, it might be unprecedented, but Steam refunds has just been introduced and they're losing money. Pulling the game serves them.

I'll give them props if they handle it well from here though, credit where it's due if they give us a speedy fix.

Ive seen how much power the consumer has when we all band together. Especially on gaf. We should all seriously start a true no preorder campaign for all the publishers that have put out bad ports in the past. Like Ubisoft for example. The worst part is that as huge fans of all these products it's not like we have, or even should, stop buying them when they release as long as they work properly. Can it really be that hard for people to just wait til release day to make an informed purchase?

GAME stores on the UK have also stopped selling the game on PC due to WB request, GMG is not selling the game anymore and it's given refunds to those who request it, this is more serious than I thought meaning it will be a while before we see a patch for the game cause I don't think they'll risk releasing a quick fix knowing they'll probably get an even worse reaction from people

can't see why people would give "props" to WB for this, they knew what they were selling and tried to sell it anyways, now they know a 30 fps lock isn't enough to get away with horrible engineered software these days, I guess they'll hand the code to a different studio or maybe RockSteady, whatever it is I'm sure we won't see any Batman PC until fall, game should have been delayed anyways.

IMO this is a very different case from ubisoft games, the last 3 batman games had their share of problems at launch but they were nowhere near unplayable like this one, hence the reason people trust them and went ahead and pre purchase the game, i just think that people is still to salty with all of this that the hyperbole is getting out of hand, WB and RS made mistake if what it's been said is true about giving IG only 8 weeks to port the game, it is impossible to get a properly working product in that time frame and believe me when i say that they will learn from this a great deal because on the long run PC games is the platform that would always be profitable to publishers, when a game stops to be printed for consoles people rely on used copies and neither publishers or devs see a penny from it, they will always see money from PC games, so this will be a learning experience for WB, ubisoft on the other hand is a company that has built a reputation of lying to their consumers and anyone who preorder games from them knows exactly what they're getting themselves in to
