SCOTUS strikes down gay marriage bans, legalizing marriage equality nationwide

Even by his standards, this is one of the most aggressively stupid things I've ever read. The very notion that someone entrusted with such an important position could not only think this, but say it, is baffling.

Mind explaining that?

edit--My bad, I thought that was the Kennedy quote. Sincerely, my mistake.

Please, tell us more about the end times of ultimate chaos and destruction resulting from people being in love with each other and having equal rights under the law for expressing that love. Go for it.

Major props to Joe Biden for being the primary impetus for change on this issue nationwide, shocking the Obama administration and forcing its hand in support of gay marriage, eventually leading to a state-by-state domino effect and majority national support, and now this decision. I'm not giving any credit to Obama for this one, after all his years of noncommittal civil union bullshit. Joe can sit in my auntie's lap at the local diner with the bikers any day.

This cynical, reductive view is partly why getting stuff like this passed is so difficult in the first place. Regardless of Obama's opinion leading up to his first election, his "evolution" into his current stance at a critical juncture in this country's history was imperative to this particular social progression. Biden being the impetus for that change in the president is instrumental, but Obama himself has to lead this country with that wisdom.

Obama has been an important piece of this puzzle, and this momentus day doesn't happen without him and Biden and many others.

As a fellow Christian, you guys are giving us a very bad look right now.

+1 to this. I'm a Christian, but I'm also not a raging lunatic. My beliefs are mine, and I believe in the separation of church and state.

Congrats to everyone who benefits from this! Not every conservative christian is a backwoods idiot who hates progress!

Now there's that light at the end of the tunnel. Congrats to all.

It's not going to happen in Australia for at least 3-5 years. We were one of the first on board the women's suffrage train too, it's fucking embarrassing

I think it's a much better chance now than just scarcely 5 years ago, and whilst there's internal opposition in the majors I think we're fairly close to a conscience vote succeeding in both houses.

All according to scripture in the bible. People didn't like Jesus? Flogged him? Cursed him? They wouldn't like me either.

OK, for the sake of things I'm going to assume you're being sincere here. See, I do feel people are being unfair here towards you having a differing, and in my mind extremely wrong, opinion, but I really do hate this kind of logic. Saying "But Jesus/the early Christians were hated" or the like to support your position can literally be applied to almost anything and it becomes rather meaningless.

Edit: Well, too late.

A great day for all humans living in the USA, we are all equal when it comes to marriage - let's keep fighting to be equal in all realms of society.

I stand up for my beliefs. I could care less about being banned or any negative reactions. The world will always be corrupt and this ruling is just a sign of the times. Ending in ultimate chaos and destruction.

So you're ok with standing up for beliefs which oppresses and deems people as lower class citizens? You're ok with hate? You're ok with being a person of spite and venom? How does two people marrying affect YOUR life? How does two people in love affect what you do everyday? The answer is it doesn't. At all. Just like how your poisonous beliefs will not affect progress or change. It will not affect those who can now finally be recognized legally by the state as married.

It's people like you that brings chaos and destruction. People like you that thinks it's ok to treat others as something beneath you. You hold to corrupted hypocritical beliefs and yet fail to recognize it, standing so lofty and mighty upon your prideful pedestal. You know what? I hope people like you can change. I hope you find love in your heart to recognize the love in others. Because the opposite of what you feel, which is the hate you have right now, is what is destroying the world.

I feel like many of you have a seriously warped view of what it means to be religious.

My girlfriend, a weekly church-going Catholic, was in tears from the news because she was so happy. Her Catholicism has taught her to love everyone, which is the same for many people in many religions.

Because he has a different opinion than others he gets banned? Ok. I happen to agree with him. I've seen more hate in the thread towards Christians and religious people than I have against gays. So should everyone be banned?
Lol what a stupid post.

All according to scripture in the bible. People didn't like Jesus? Flogged him? Cursed him? They wouldn't like me either.

They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?

This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.

So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

Huckabee's mad

Lmao

What a moron

It literally has zero net affect on Christians ability to practice. Unbelievable how badly they want to control and oppress everyone

Are they literally unable to coexist cuz it seems like the majority of Christians I know do it everyday no problem

Congrats 'Merrica. Kinda sad that it took this long.

Thanks. And for a nation of 300 million people across 50 country size states with regionally different ideals, and a government built to basically slow the pace of decision making, I think we did pretty good.

Also I think the US is now officially the largest country with same-sex marriage, right?

I'm not. Ugh. I'm far from perfect. But I try to serve others and love others.

Honestly man, you're first post was bemoaning the direction of the country, your second was that this was bringing chaos and destruction.

How is that serving or loving your fellow man when your just condemning them? Think on that.

I don't see how accepting love is destructive, yet denying love is constructive. There is no sense there. Tolerating intolerance is what leads to chaos and destruction.

Because he has a different opinion than others he gets banned? Ok. I happen to agree with him. I've seen more hate in the thread towards Christians and religious people than I have against gays. So should everyone be banned?

You probably are also on the wrong forum then.

Dining on salt:
This is SO bad. I’m just glad I don’t live near any coastlines or fault lines. This is going to be a real SHTF time. Just the other day, a tree, must have been at least 50 years old, just a few blocks from where I work, blue down in a freak squall. Big trees are not supposed to just uproot for no reason. Bad omen? You betcha. Reckon I’ll be stocking up on bottled water and batteries.

To be fair, I think he might have a point. This weekend, I suspect that all over the US, the Earth will move.

This is awesome. Truly. I live in MS and have a Gay sister in law, if this wasn't done by SCOTUS it would never have been done. Historic. God damn this is a good day.

The funniest comment to me on the Fox article is someone saying "Does anyone remember what happened to the Roman Empire?!"

Yes, the Roman Empire collapsed because gays. All those gays who just came out of nowhere after the Christianization of the Empire. Makes great sense.

Yep, that "argument" always drives me crazy when some jackass brings it up.

Thinking about it. This is the spicing the Rep. primary needed to get that extra amount of double crazy. Will record all debates.

Sadly, the minority of believers are mixed with a huge number of unbelievers. And when the Almighty decides to let things hit the fan in the form of droughts, severe storms, earthquakes, maybe even a caldera popping off, we, the believers are going to suffer as well.
N.B. This makes the US an even bigger target for terrorism. Islamic fundamentalists abominate homosexuality. This ruling makes the USA look like Queerdom-central. A provocation like this, the Achmeds of the world won’t ignore.

What the fuck am I reading?

You're conflating "holy matrimony" with "civil marriage contract."

There is no little asterisk on the 14th Amendment that says "equal protection of the laws (*except for civil marriage laws)."
There's also no asterisk that says "all persons born or naturalized (*except for the faggots)."

It's not a judge's job to take it upon himself to scribble those little exceptions into the margins of the U.S. Constitution. If you want those lines in the law, you're free to seek an amendment.

Of course people who identify as homosexual are included in the "all persons born or naturalized". They should have equal access to protection under the laws just like anyone else. Everyone should have the right to marry. But that doesn't mandate the government to define marriage as anything in particular. If marriage is defined as between one man and one women, and the right to engage in marriage is open to all, then the law is applying equally to all and no rights of the 14th Amendment are being abridged.

Not that I think the Constitution prohibits the government from making their marriage laws apply to whatever and whoever people want it to. It just doesn't demand that they have to.

I feel like many of you have a seriously warped view of what it means to be religious.

My girlfriend, a weekly church-going Catholic, was in tears from the news because she was so happy. Her Catholicism has taught her to love everyone, which is the same for many people in many religions.

And that's great. But you also need to realize that many Christians (including powerful politicians) don't feel the same way, and wanted to repress and restrict a segment of the population due to their own personal beliefs. Nobody is attacking religion here. We're attacking bigots who had a very clear agenda of homophobia.

Now those people are the dinosaurs looking up at the world-ending asteroid, and we will feast on their tears.

Wow, I've yet to see a repub accept the ruling on twitter.

They can't really fight this, can they? They aren't going to try to fight this in the elections, that's fucking suicide.

Because he has a different opinion than others he gets banned? Ok. I happen to agree with him. I've seen more hate in the thread towards Christians and religious people than I have against gays. So should everyone be banned?

Crying about a looming apocalypse is going to bring mockery.
