The majority opinion even affirmed the right of religious groups to speak out against same sex marriage, and for religious officials to not have to perform it on conscientious objection grounds. There's nothing discriminatory about the ruling.

This idea that marriage is a Christian institution is, without excuse, completely idiotic. Marriage existed in societies before Judaism even came around, much less the canonized Christian faith. It's not something any single religion, culture, or institution can take credit for.

If you wanted to preserve it as a religious institution, you shouldn't have made it state recognized and handed out tax benefits for it. That makes it a contract, not a religious exercise.

I'm a Christian.

In general, for moments like this, Christians have so little empathy and tact. This ruling is not bringing destruction. It allows equal rights. It allows two people in love, regardless of sex, to marry. I couldn't be happier.

The ending of that opinion was pure gold. Good stuff. I see the usual suspects are out in force but as a local government employee we are making the necessary form alterations as we speak. Come get married!

Oogie, Rest assured no one here is attacking anyone for being religious. We do not draw a straight line between religious and bigotry, I promise you.

What is unfair is for people to impede the rights of others in the name of religion. That's on the person not the religion in this instance. Again, I am avoiding discussion on what a book does or doesn't say.

I'm so happy! I just woke up to find out I can finally get married in my home state!
Now I just need to find someone who will marry me...

I honestly didn't think this would happen before I was in my late thirties at the earliest. This is such a great day!

You are mistaken, the gay agenda has no intention of honoring any boundaries regarding the rights of others. They had equal rights, but they are intent on shredding yours. This ruling will enable the gay agenda to pursue litigation against any person or group who's standards do not comport with theirs. They have already been doing so in gay marriage states, and today I suspect they will be filing law suits across the country seeking damages against those who's conscience will not allow them to honor ungodly behavior.

We've had marriage equality here in Sweden since 2009 and I can confirm that we haven't seen the end times or any sign of rapture since.

There is a small cloud in the sky though, I'm gonna have to get back to you, GAF.

The troubling thing is our country has continued to have to resort to perilous court cases to decide what should be without question for anyone that loves their fellow man. Today is a great day, one that is long coming, but why is it our history, a nation trumpeted as one of freedom and rights, gets those human rights so wrong so frequently and subsequently tears itself apart through vitriolic rhetoric appealing to bigots? The beauty of democracy is often marred by dark places of human nature. Through education and loving your neighbor are we able to suppress those ancient animalistic tendencies. I applaud our country for making this wrong right, but it saddens me that we do this time and time again. We are all humans for as much as we like to think we are either better or different from one another, I hope that one day we see through that illusion as the shackles that hold our species hostage.

But it's only civil marriage affected here, not religious.

Unless I'm misunderstanding the ruling, you (as a pastor) can still refuse to conduct the marriage ceremony for a gay couple in your church. This just eliminates a ban on them receiving a marriage license from the government, and all of the legal benefits afforded by that status.
