It's not our military, or all our money, or just how fucking hot our women are, this is what makes the US the best country in the world.

5-4 is just barely squeaking by. I can't remember what it was but listening to NPR they had a person on who seemed to believe a really close decision might not be great for this getting adopted by the states. Is there anything to this?

You sure they didn't say something like "narrow decision"? Not referring to the votng margin but the broadness of the language of the decision.

This picture is destroying me. Trying to stay just teary eyed here at work.

So, did Scalia's dissent basically boil down to "who cares what Supreme Court Justices think? Am I right?!"???

this isn't someone saying Metal Gear is garbage. this is people being bigoted assholes.

I mean saying Kojima is a shitty writer who makes bad games is basically the same as saying all gays are evil. but there's a slight difference. I will leave it to you to figure it out.

You're getting pissy with me because....?

Bigoted opinions are ones you do not share here. Hence me saying you need to NOT share these types of opinions here to survive.

Part of surviving here is learning when and when not ton and HOW express your opinions/beliefs.

He was given an opportunity to say something to the effect of:

"I'm sorry but I just disagree with the ruling, I'll take my grievances elsewhere"

but instead choose to go full tilt with the apocalypse.

Fantastic!

Reading Roberts dissent though...

As a result, the Court invalidates the marriage laws of more than half the States and orders the transformation of a social institution that has formed the basis of human society for millennia, for the Kalahari Bushmen and the Han Chinese, the Carthaginians and the Aztecs. Just who do we think we are?

Jesus christ, this is your Chief Justice.

I believe in marriage between a man and a woman only. I'm also a Christian and a pastor. Doesn't mean I hate gays. I disagree with them just as I would a adulterer or any other sin. I sin but I try not to live in a lifestyle of sin. Everyone has issues.

For your beliefs, it has actually a positive effect. The desire of same sex couples to marry makes marriage relevant again.

Alito's dissent intrigues me;

First: People will brand opposers as bigots no matter what the decision here was.
Second: Maybe they should be?
I'm curious if he's saying that opposers shouldn't necessarily be branded as bigots, or if he's saying that using it as a cheap rejoinder rather than entering into debate is detrimental to the national conversation.

He fears he'll be branded a bigot. As he should.

Yeah states' rights is the same garbage argument they were using in the 60s (both the 1860s and the 1960s for that matter). It's OK to oppress a minority group's rights if we only do it state by state right? Pure garbage.

At the same time, I think in a sense it's preferable for civil rights issues to be solved by the courts, because it's bad precedent to leave them up to the will of the majority. Fundamental rights shouldn't be things the populace can vote on.

But shouldn't said populace have some say in the matter?

I-I never thought this day would come.
Mark it down for the history books everyone 2015/06/26 the day democracy faltered, the day our values were destroyed, the day the rebellious youth went against morals and human decency, against all that is holy and pure.
But shouldn't said populace have some say in the matter?

There's often a fine line for these sort of deals.

For example, regarding marriage rights for homosexuals. The general populace is indecisive/against it. So it requires government intervention.
Regarding marijuana usage. The general populace is indecisive/pro usage. But the government is against it.

Salty response but I'll accept this:

While I believe that this issue should be decided by states & legislatures, not the federal judiciary, I also believe in the rule of law.

The state of Georgia is subject to the laws of the United States, and we will follow them.

Man, this huckabee guy is actually running for president? Who would vote for such a person. Everything that comes out of his mouth just makes me mad.

The Law according to conservatives in the US boils down to:

Gun rights > states rights > religious rights > individual rights
