That is. Wow. Fucking huge. Congrats US!
Hopefully Europe will follow suite, the part that hasn't already.

Norways healt minister want to allow kids at the age of 7, in conjunction with their parents, to be allowed to chose their sex. Legal sex That is. Medical procedures are still 18 and they want it to remain so until they are actually adults and understand the choices better. Operations are always dangerous yo :) that's the step I want everyone to here to take.

WASHINGTON—Shortly after turning in dissenting opinions in landmark federal rulings today that struck down the Defense of Marriage Act and conferred full federal benefits to married same-sex couples, Supreme Court justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas, John G. Roberts, and Samuel Alito reportedly realized today that they would someday be portrayed as villains in an Oscar-winning film about the fight for marriage equality. “Oh, God, the major social ramifications, the political intrigue, all the important people involved in the case—I’m going to be played by some sinister character actor in a drama with tons of award buzz, aren’t I?” said Scalia, joining his fellow dissenting justices in realizing they would be antagonists in a film potentially titled Defense Of Marriage and probably written by Tony Kushner. “I’m going to be portrayed as a closed-minded Neanderthal and the very symbol of backward thinking. And at the end of the movie, when my character realizes he’s on the wrong side of history, the audience will feel emotionally fulfilled because the hero attorney, probably played by George fucking Clooney, will have won. Great.” While they added that they aren’t looking forward to being vilified on screen, Scalia, Roberts, Alito, and Thomas all agreed that the movie would probably be pretty good, and that they could see Paul Dano getting his first Academy Award nomination for his supporting role as a gay rights crusader.

I love the Onion. this still works.

I hope decisions like this one push more folks to vote.

A 5-4 decision just goes to show that if what you want is progress (and progress seems to only really come from the left given that the american right appears to mostly just want to shit on it every step of the way) you need to get out there to vote given that Supreme Court candidates are put forth by the president. Had a conservative won one of the last couple of elections we probably wouldn't be here right now.

If McCain is President...no Sotomayor nor Kagan. Ruling 6-3 against marriage equality most likely.

I'm trying to imagine the faces over at Fox News.

I still think many of them are just actors. Now going "geez we have to tune it up to 11 now? They better pay me more!"

Fantastic news. Let's hope this pushes and encourages more countries to follow. Your work is not yet done, Penny.gif. You need to go international.

An african american supreme court judge voted no regarding a life changing ruling for a particular group of people?

Even if you don't approve of their life choices, how can you ethically do that knowing your own people were in a similar postion a few decades ago.

His dissent explicitly notes that slavery was not inherently harmful to the dignity of those under it because the government is not in a position to grant or remove dignity.

So, yeah, I dunno.

The people saying this will doom the country and the end times are coming are crazy. This won't make more people become gay. Nobody out there was thinking, "I can't marry someone of the same sex? Oh, I guess I'll just be straight then."

Oh dear, I was merely jesting!
I completely support this ruling.

I did not know the general populace was for gay marriage however, but it may be my bias because of location. I meant in my statement that it was still required because some states would have never approved of it.
Poe's law? I mean, I can't tell anymore because of a couple of other posters in here.

Still on page 17 reading through the thread! I didn't realize there were people stating seriously what I was joking about...

anyone got any links to some juicy right wing salt mines
Here's a list of reactions from some of the many presidential candidates: http://time.com/3937636/supreme-court-gay-marriage-presidential-candidates/

Some of the worst:

Mike Huckabee said:
The Supreme Court has spoken with a very divided voice on something only the Supreme Being can do — redefine marriage. I will not acquiesce to an imperial court any more than our Founders acquiesced to an imperial British monarch. We must resist and reject judicial tyranny, not retreat.

Bobby Jindal said:
The Supreme Court decision today conveniently and not surprisingly follows public opinion polls, and tramples on states’ rights that were once protected by the 10th Amendment of the Constitution. Marriage between a man and a woman was established by God, and no earthly court can alter that.
This decision will pave the way for an all out assault against the religious freedom rights of Christians who disagree with this decision. This ruling must not be used as pretext by Washington to erode our right to religious liberty.

Scott Walker said:
I believe this Supreme Court decision is a grave mistake. Five unelected judges have taken it upon themselves to redefine the institution of marriage, an institution that the author of this decision acknowledges “has been with us for millennia.” In 2006 I, like millions of Americans, voted to amend our state constitution to protect the institution of marriage from exactly this type of judicial activism. The states are the proper place for these decisions to be made, and as we have seen repeatedly over the last few days, we will need a conservative president who will appoint men and women to the Court who will faithfully interpret the Constitution and laws of our land without injecting their own political agendas. As a result of this decision, the only alternative left for the American people is to support an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to reaffirm the ability of the states to continue to define marriage.

Why the hell do these people think gay marriage interferes with Christianity? Where in the gospels does Jesus condemn it? I see some Christians reference Leviticus but that's from the OLD testament. Christianity is based on the teachings of Jesus, which are based on loving the world and others. These politicians don't understand that they're doing the farthest from the work of Christ, who, according to the gospels, feasted with tax collectors, lepers, and more of the most discriminated members of society. To live the teachings of Christ is to help those who are discriminated against as much as possible.

As President, your goal should be to make the lives of every American the best they can possibly be. Being against Gay Marriage does nothing but harm to others. If your goal is discrimination and wasting your time on deliberately harming the lives of others, good riddance. But sadly they need to appeal to many voters who are bigots.

Got a little off topic there but nevertheless, great job America!

To be fair, in some ways we were better off with segregation. Particular with schooling. The black teachers actually cared about the black children.

SING IT BROTHER!

Gay marriage has come to America thanks to Ohio, BTW. Today's decision came on a case brought by an Ohioan, James Obergefell. The case's name is "OBERGEFELL, ET AL. v. HODGES, DIRECTOR, OHIO DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, ET AL."

The people against gay marriage who brought the state constitutional amendment to Ohio voters in 2004 that banned gay marriage actually caused the eventual legalization of gay marriage for the entire nation. Irony!

Suddenly, I feel proud to be an Ohioan.

But if I was of voting age in 2004 and voted against the ban, I would have been doing the wrong thing?

TIME PARADOX

I know, it's a quandary, haha. I was a pretty new voter back then — I was 19, it was my first major election — and I did vote against it. Sorry, America, I almost made gay marriage not happen for everyone.

My parents are so salty about this. Normally they flip the channel when SSM is mentioned on the news, but this time they had to hug each other and rant about how this is bad. I love it.

Congrats, GayGAF!

Y'know, I really don't understand what's up with Thomas.
Roberts, I get, he's basically a glorified librarian, he likes the words but doesn't care about actually applying them. Scalia is a bitter old contrarian arsehole. Alito's an incompetent hack who happened to be in the right place at the right time with the right connections throughout his lifetime. Kennedy, the usual dark horse/swing vote is a libertarian (which means his stances, while principially sound, can more often than not have disastrous consequences, like all libertarian ideas).
But Thomas is just incoherent. He literally makes no sense. Does the man have some sort of brain problem? Like some sort of undiagnosed tumour, or chronic hypoxia?
