Wow, the cash numbers fucking tanked in the last two days. What happened? Did a bunch of people withdraw their pledges?

Its disheartening to see that a Shenmue 3 kickstarter only interested die hard fans :/

No that's basically how I thought it would be. Nobody knows Shenmue. I told everyone about it. Everyone knows Final Fantasy 7 (Germany here, just to be clear^^) but no one knows what Shenmue is. Nobody I know even had a Dreamcast. It was PS2 or bust. It's a cult classic for the fans. But the game is unknown to the mainstream. And the video doesn't even show what it is about. So that's not helping either.

No, just less people. A lot less. And a flat campaign. :/

Doesn't look like it though. Looking at the last week of backers and $:

351 backers - $25k
309 backers - $25k
394 backers - $44k
283 backers - $50k
216 backers - $10k
196 backers - $18k

Something definitely happened two days ago. Usually when there's a drop like that, it means some high volume backers withdrew their pledges. The pledge average for the campaign is still at about $81, so people supporting this are not generally supporting at a base level.

Don't be bad, bro. It's too easy to finger point towards him and I don't like people using him as an easy target. We all know the reasons why the funding is flatlining, it's due to a number of factors that points to many parties.

What need to happen now is some hewvy guerilla marketing and pr executions along with community effort. I know there is time but id prefer that no time to be wasted.

44k and 50k days happened after the reveal of new goals and new tiers for backers. I think we also had pledges trolls, because there was like 3000 dollars that have been withdrawed.

Maybe it's a sign for a new Shenmue thread.

Good stuff. Did you get most of your journal filled and got your skills to over 85% average, or did you just rush through the game? The easter eggs in shenmue are a-plenty!

Not most, and skills aren't all that high yet. Still training a bit and have rushed a tiny bit, but trying to do things like talk to everyone, call Nozomi every night and see her every day, uncover random scenes, etc.

Only reason I'm slightly rushing, is that I want to have the video done within the next two weeks. Hopefully in time for the final KS week!

They've done not much to sustain any momentum in this campaign unfortunately.

I think they are really amateurs in this campaign, like other said, they ve done nothing to keep to momentum, kinda strange since they probably put a lot of tought and planing , its SHENMUE!!!

They also had the experience of other sucessfull kickstarter games and probably the help of sony, it its not money, its advising i guess, it really strikes me hard how amateurs they are in all this process, like others said, 20 minutes of unreal engine to show Ryo and that was it!

For those who dont know the game the producers done nothing to involve them and let them know how amazing shenmue was, this was like an appeal to nostalgia of old fans, totally bouncing out millions of new players where the medium age its probably 15/20 years, that never heard of Shenmue before.

How can you be so sure that everyone who owned a Copy of Shenmue 2 on Xbox have switched over to PS4 ?
Now while its fairly sure most of the Dreamcast audience moved on to PS2,3,NGC..etc. Due to similar tastes in games.

But there is still a good number who moved to Xbox at the time as well , Panzer Dragoon,JSRF,PSO Ep1&2. Why would they not stick with the Xbox brand ? , the 360 sold well. The XB1 did sort out most of their issues. Perhaps a good bunch of people who played Shenmue 2 are now on XB1.

As much as target demographic points to PS4 for this Genre of game. That isn't going to help it get funding , this game is mainly getting funding only from people who have played the previous titles. Anyone who havent played the previous games are not going to get excited by that trailer.

Am not saying the game should have gone XB1/PC instead of PS4/PC. But PS4/XB1/PC would have gotten additional funding from Xbox people. Definetely something noticeable ( And might have avoided this media hate its getting because of Sony's involvement)
The question is was the Sony deal worth it for them to just ignore the XB1 audience.

I hope Sony throws in some money into the development , I just feel its unfair that the kickstarter was sabotaged by the media and a fairly incompetent KS team.

Lolwat

Anyways the number of people what got into Shenmue because of Xbox is ridiculous, dreamcast's numbers were much much higher, and if those numbers were any good we'd get shenmue 3 ages ago.

SEGA signing for Shenmue with Microsoft is what killed Shenmue 3 back then to begin with, i don't think they should expect any premium treatment.

i'm yet to see a single kickstarter that does maintain momentum tbh. they're all about those first 3 days and that last 24 hours. the rest is essentially a flatline. lol
yeah. i think the front loading of this campaign has just made the effect more pronounced.

things can be done better though. luckily fans are stepping up to the plate to some degree. it's really nice to see the shenmue community brought back together after all these years.

I wish i had time for i know i would have made a beastly shenmue video. I always wanted to do it but commitments here in japan are paramount, which is the reason why versus battlecast has been so delayed. Time...

this train don't stop until we hit 6 million.

dat free battle enhancement system

Agreed. This is Yu Suzuki, one of the Gods of Gaming and the creator of Virtua Fighter. We MUST get that free battle enhancement system!

Thinking about it, everyone that plays Virtua Fighter should be supporting and funding Shenmue III.

I thought I was the only one still playing Virtua Fighter though.

i think there's a lot of crossover there anyway.

i wonder if all the people who bought outrun, space harrier, hang on, and afterburner on 3ds know they were made by yu suzuki...

Whoever does the translations for the Kickstarter interview videos is doing an awesome job. He even manages to capture the emotion of the person in how he delivers the lines.

hoping we do get something later today. the backer number is going up but it's getting very annoying to see that we're stuck in the 3,760,000s still

It is so strange. Shouldnt they work together? I mean it seems the whole KS revolves around Suzuki. I mean sure. He is the creator, but things like new rewards should be approved by the whole team behind the KS, not just one person.
i think they're using suzuki as the 'face' of the campaign because of the community's reaction to awesome japan's antics.

regardless, it could just be a turn of phrase. the important part is that some new rewards are on the way and should draw new people in/get some pledges increased.

Bloodstained had good updates and very desirable stretchgoals being announced along the way.

I still don't understand most of Shenmue's stretchgoals and have no desire to put more money in it. And they are sadly delusional with those 11 million goals already announced :/

new update

it's an interview with the script writer for shenmue

also this titbit:

Awesome video. I always found it interesting that Yu Suzuki decided to collaborate with non-gaming industry talent for Shenmue. I don't think anyone else at the time would have thought to bring on an actual screenwriter for a game.

About 70% of the people that worked on Shenmue were not in SEGA and were largely non-gaming industry talent. He also brought architects, film directors, cameramen and other kinds of people on board. He explains in the GDC2014 portmortem and you can gain further insight in the GDC2000 talk.

The obsession with the current $ amount is soul-draining. No fun at all. Let's not do it.

This should be fun!

This is right. We know the funding will carry on at around this pace and then they'll be a big bump toward the end.

I've never used Kickstarter and will sign up for this, though the 10% they take out seems a bit much.

Absolutely. The recent news about how the voice acting was handled has put a bit of a bad light on Suzuki. I think it's important to recognize all of things that he absolutely nailed with Shenmue well before their time. Playing it again recently, I'm still struck at just how well camera angles are handled during conversations, cutscenes and various dramatic moments.

how would you feel if there was a thread explaining the series on here? i was working on a video and had an unused draft for a shenmue newcomers guide, and i'm thinking of rolling them together into a great case to try the series and maybe back the kickstarter.

I don't know if it is in reference to the rewards or something else, but Cedric Biscay (producer) is teasing on Twitter: "Seems that the #Shenmue3 KS page will have an interesting update soon ;)"

A big reason why I haven't participated in this thread that much. The constant "Only 239 backers in the last 24 hours!" or "Did someone just withdraw $3,000!!?" is a real drag on my mood for it. I'll just wait until the KS is over to talk about the future of the game I guess.

I dont understand how they could come so unprepared to Kickstarting a game like Shenmue 3.
Everything we seen so far is just a vision, an idea about how they wish the next game to be. Iam dissapointed, upset and quite frankly sad for how this is treated, mainly by "Awesome Japan" i guess.

Still reconsidering withdrawing my pledge. If so thats my first time in 42 different Kickstarters.

is the problem that there isn't enough material to show?

that's kind of an inherent thing with this kickstarter though. they're coming to crowdfunding because there just isn't anybody willing to put the money in and make this outright. there's no 20% finished build ready. i can understand being a little confused about the new gameplay mechanics (an explanation is coming though), but if you stay for the long haul you are going to see the benefits of patience.

i'm not going to get on my hands and knees to beg you to stay, but starving the game of funding in the long run doesn't help anybody. not even you, not if you really want to see shenmue 3 happen.

This interview is fantastic! Why aren't these videos up on GamesTrailers and other websites?! Someone should point all these videos to those big websites so they can put it up. It's a crime not to be exposed.

We'd love to put the videos on Gameblog (we did put up some of them) but they're not subtitled in French. A lot of our readers don't understand English.

In all honesty, I was actually shocked that they had any footage at all. Now that I understand Unreal Engine 4 a little bit better, I guess it didn't necessarily take that long to put together, but still.

The other problem is that the stretch goals and overall vision for the game is very vague due to Yu not wanting to give away much story. This much was implied in a reply from Joel (red-shirt guy) to a ShenmueDojo member when asking for more information.

I do understand this, and I will appreciate it in the long-run, but it is likely hurting the campaign (maybe just a little though, I have never seen a Kickstarter not go through this slump). However, nothing can curb my excitement for this game!
