SHENMUE 3 kickstarter (PC/PS4) - FINAL DAY - NEW KS RECORD GO GO GO!

Got a question: if I donate an amount lower than what's needed to get a digital version of the game, but then donate another separate amount later that means I've donated the amount needed to get the game, will KS add my donations like this?

Kickstarter donations are not final until the deadline is hit. No charges will be made to your card before that. You can modify your pledge between making it and it being paid.
Other projects let you make adjustments later and upgrade over time using PayPal but they need to set that up.

Better not set yourselves up for disappointment tbh. There is no timeframe for any update and it could be anything.

Well yeah hype should be kept in check to avoid disappointment. I think it's just that this campaign is desperately in need of a jolt and we've seen an announcement that one is coming. So I think it's okay to be excited about it though as you say perhaps not too excited since the update could just be something simple.

Reading around on ShenmueDojo there is this:

Physical PS4 edition finally after all this time in tandem with new tiers?

It's going to be some "You can now pay us $2000 and get a mirror replica" which will add some money from Dojo diehards and stop after that isn't it.

lol. I hope it's more than that! The guys over at ShenmueDojo are speculating that it's a multitude of new tiers at various ranges as that injected energy in to the campaign before so it would make perfect sense for them to try it again. They're also pretty certain it's the PS4 physical reward but that obviously could just be misplaced optimism and wishful thinking.

Whatever it is I hope it surges the donations. Would love to see the campaign break 4 million.

Is there really a holdup over money I wonder? I feel that Marshall would be on board no matter what the price. Maybe he has a contract with another company that controls his voice work?

Negotiations only started in the last week or so. i doubt there will be any problems.

no, there's probably no hold up. contracts have to be drawn, VA needs to be costed. it takes time. they could have done it before the KS launched, but y'know, secrecy and probably not enough time to talk with corey/his agent before it launched.

There doesn't need to be. Japanese voices are definitely in. English voices are still up in the air.

I'd like the option either way. Unfortunately, it's very common for publishers to restrict audio tracks to specific regions rather than letting the player decide.

(I understand almost no Japanese so I'm not sure if Shenmue 2 was well acted but that was infinitely better than being beaten over the head with the clearly awful English dub of Shenmue 1)

Corey Marshall being in active negotiations means an English VA is almost definite and happening. From what I remember I played Shenmue 1 in English and then Shenmue 2 in Japanese as the European release on the DC only had the Japanese voice option.

Think I preferred the Japanese VA to be honest so I don't mind either way. It made the game feel more authentic if that makes sense.

Thinking back Shenmue 2 really was an incredible game. Way ahead of its time.

Honesty, it wouldn't surprise me if we don't get voice acting for some of the NPCs, maybe just the main characters and during cutscenes (similar to the Dreamcast rips floating around the internet), especially if they're going for dual languages.

So Awesome Japan generally post their Shenmue updates in the morning over in Japan. It's 2.00am over in Japan currently so say they post their (hopefully) megaton update in the morning as usual we're looking at the update hitting the Kickstarter page around 9:00am tomorrow Japan time. That works out to around ~7 hours from now so the early hours of the morning (1:00am) for those in the UK. Excited to see what it is. This is of course pure speculation. They could post the update any time but their pattern generally seems to be in the mornings over in Japan.

I really hope it's the physical PS4 edition. That's 500K in funding right there even from just people doubling their pledges.

i'm thinking of it as incentive to play the game twice, really.

i dunno. i think it's been implied shenmue 3 won't have masses of NPCs (why would you for rural china anyway), but nothing has really pointed at limited voice acting.

Better voice directing is always welcome but honestly I'd be perfectly fine with the good ol' Shenmue 1/2 English dub quality, cheese and all.

You'd be fine with it because you're a diehard Shenmue fan. So would I. I'd even be fine with no recorded dialogue at all. But for Shenmue to be taken seriously by new gamers, and for the series to gain new fans, it needs better voice acting.

Hopefully I am able to pledge before the KS ends. I want Shenmue 3 so bad.

I really do hope they use the classic Ryo model though. The new one is eh.

Well, Suzuki has been talking about a scale similar to Shenmue I. How many characters were in that, 300? Even if this game had a third of that, that is a serious VA undertaking.

Sucks that this has been hovering around the upper 3 million for a while now, hopefully the last few days, we get a real good funding push. Seems to be a kickstarter trend anyways.

This is correct.

I'm absolutely baffled to see so many Shenmue fans get all misty eyed with nostalgia over the English dub, as though this was somehow part of the game's ineffable charm. It was horrible in 1999 and it's still horrible now.

Shenmue was special despite its terrible localisation, not because of it.

Too late for that. New Shenmue fans will look up the other games and see how that voice acting is. Nothing can change that. They are either into that or not. Doesn't matter really.

I don't think they can make a final decision of voice acting since they don't really know the scope of the game yet. For know it looks like Bailu and Baisha should be some little towns in line with Guilin from Shenmue II, so maybe there will be few characters there and the voice requirements could be lower.

So it could depend on whether we reach the Choubu stretch goals. Yu Suzuki himself has said that if we get the 10 million Choubu would be made to a scale similar to Dobuita in the first game, so that would surely increase the needs for voice acting, and maybe impact the negotiations with Corey Marshall or other voice actors.

I don't know if I'd go that far. it's objectively bad, but i love it cuz its so bad. just like resident evil 1

but I also know that's not gonna work if we want this game to be successful outside of diehard fans

Its because these guys just dont get it. Im so disappointed by their lack of effort at getting more people to pledge.

I think they're working on it and we need to cut AJ a break for a while. They've been pretty active the last handful of days. Time to start giving credit where it's due and recognizing there is still time for more to come.

Why anyone who grew up playing the English version wouldn't want Corey back to voice Ryo is puzzling to me. He is Ryo. Yeah, the voice acting overall was shiity in spots but that was Shenmue for you. Corey really wasn't that bad and his voice suited the character. I hope he voices him in Shenmue 3 and I'd be pretty disappointed if they bring in some random jobber. Change anyone else if need be but the main character VA should remain if possible, just to have that continuity if nothing else.

Personally I was fine with Ryo's voice acting but a lot of the smaller characters were so bad I couldn't believe it. Goro for example. I'd prefer Shenmue 3 step up it's game for those characters but Ryo is fine the way he was. I actually delight in some of the quirkiness that results from the animation and the stiff acting at times. For example when Ryo has a soda.

Another favorite example is when Ryo is trying to buy a ticket to Hong Kong. The bitchy lady at the desk keeps giving him lousy service and insisting those are the cheapest fares they have. Ryo stares almost blankly but still a little hopefully and just asks "Do you have anything cheaper?"

It's hilarious to me. It's accidental comedy that I really hope isn't lost in Shenmue 3.

Exactly. Other than Corey, I would like to see Eric Kelso (Ren) and Lisle Wilkerson (Joy/Xiuying) return.

Fun fact: Lan Di and Chai shared the same voice actor :)

I definitely find the bad voice acting to be part of the appeal. Wouldn't change a thing, but I wouldn't mind more modern, polished stuff. The more voice actors that return, the better. At least as far as I'm concerned.

Maybe you're Corey.

I see

Joking aside, Corey's voice really fits the character of Ryo well and I thought he did a very good job back then. Sure hope he can come back for III.

Someone knows a way to contact with Shenmuedojo's mod? I want to help with spanish translation of the 30onthe3rd campaign but my account still is inactive with no signal of activation mail

I just starting replaying Shenmue and while I think the dub is quite poor, it does have a ton of memorable quotes that give the game some identity. When I played through the import of Shenmue 2 I never got any of the good stuff like "Hey mister wanna play with me?" and "I'm fine and dandy...i'm okaaaauuy."

Is right. Get Corey and whoever voiced Lan Di, even though he only had a few lines.

The pacing was all unnatural in 1 & 2. They won't have such revoicing problems with modern software.

Is that so?
i see.

anyway, part of the problem with shenmue's dub was matching the existing dialogue animation. that shouldn't be a problem now, i can't imagine they'd do it the same way this time around when animation rigging tools have gotten so much more advanced and easy to use.
