Fighting Games Weekly | June 29 - Jul 5 | Frauds Among U.S.

I wonder what kind of numbers UNIEL might have gotten.
If you were to extrapolate numbers from regional events, it probably would have gotten the same number of players P4AU did.

Apparently over 600 and was the biggest game after SFIV in 2010 based on what's being said in TTT2 OT.

The way I'm looking at Tekken 7 numbers is that if a MvC4 or SFV had been announced as an EVO tournament before actual console release and some people had the first chance to play it, I can only imagine how many would have entered just to try the game out.

Tekken is just no longer as popular as it used to be, which really sucks because it's the only 3D fighter being represented anyway.
I thought the entrants for T6 at Evo 2010 was around 300, not 600. It was the second biggest game regardless, as the only big fighting game at the time was SSF4 and the next biggest game at Evo that year was... Melty Blood.

I also think there's a very real issue of self-selection going on here. Yeah, a promotional SF5 tournament would get a stupid number of entrants -- but there are also a lot of SF fans already in the building. I don't think you would have a lot of Tekken fans naturally at Evo unless the game was there normally, and I doubt very many people are going to take on significant personal expenses to enter a tournament for a game they have never played. So the only people who would go are Tekken fans that are either relatively close by or that play other fighting games. I think if you had a prerelease tournament at an event like Final Round, you would have a large proportion of the TTT2 players entering.

EVO lineup gives a boost to tourney entrants at other events. If UNIEL is pulling P4AU numbers without EVO, it would be higher than P4AU at EVO most likely.

Too bad FB doesn't have the ASW/Atlus money backing it.

I don't honestly know T6 numbers. Just restating what was mentioned elsewhere earlier.

And I suppose you're right about T7 numbers. EVO, at the end of the day, is still a 2D-fighting game-focused tournament so we shouldn't be expecting a wild population of Tekken players.

If Harada isn't bluffing, Tekken 7 is also apparently making Namco more money in the arcades than any previous Tekken title before it.

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax is getting a chunk of international players that I don't think Under Night In Birth Exe Late would've gotten.

This is like SCV and KOF13. Similar numbers but KOF was given 3 years as an evo game. Soul Calibur only one.

KOF was a game that was just too high-maintenance for many to play it but they enjoyed watching it. It was the FGC equivalent of say, Neville- something you knew was never going to be anywhere near the main event because of size, but was technically solid and entertaining.

When I went to FR, despite not liking Tekken all that much traditionally, I entered the TTT2 pre-release tourney to see what it's about. Had some asshole screaming loud intentionally in my ear the whole time. Spent a lot more time playing VF, AH, and KOF that weekend.

As for Tekken 7, I think it will sell less than TTT2 did.

I am gonna be doubting that, especially if Tekken 7 gets a PC release.

TTT2 was a spinoff game with more complex mechanics releasing at the end of a console generation with strong competition (SCV, Skullgirls, SFXTK, VF5FS, Blazblue, DoA5, P4A all in the same year).

Tekken 7's situation is going to be different.

I can only comment on what I've seen and heard in the southeast, but I would have expected UNIEL to do a little better. The people around here seem to hate P4AU.

You could say that KOF is the only SNK representation at EVO where as Namco at least has the option of either Tekken or SC.

Though we all know it's because of hype top 8s get viewers and thus EVO inclusion.

Marvel bracket match ups:

K113: ChrisG, Flux, Diechan
J123: Justin Wong, Ranmasama, Marvisto
J126: FChamp, VX, Quasidomo, XSK Samurai
J121: RayRay, Udaterasu, Chris Schmidt
J114: Yipes, Anabolic, Miniboss, Terry Bogard, RF
H116: Jan, Kyle P, Whiteblack
I126: Viscant, Humbag
I114: Full Schedule, IGT Unknown, Danke
I116: Nemo, Shorty
H123: Cloud805, Takumi
I123: Marvelo, Rikir, Angelic
J125: Clockwork, Fizzycups
H118: Kaneblueriver, Windzero, Jeopardy
H121: GCYoshi, Knives
I127: Kbrad, Nishikawa, Quackbot, Snaketits

Other pools with notable players didn't seem to have big competition (like PRRog's, Neo's and Flocker's pool where they were the only notable players in them).

KOF13 top 8 was disappointing, not because of the matches, they were pretty good with Tokido making Xiaohai work for his win, but I have never seen commentators give less of a damn when their game has some of the most exposure it's ever going to get at its point in life. I know Hellpockets was banned off commentary because he said a curse year the year before but at least he puts in a lot of enthusiasm besides, "yea, okay, he got a hit" when both players were vying for hits with stocked resources.

Yeah, the commentary was embarrassing and ruined an otherwise great finals.

The sad thing was that they did have good KOF commentators there like Juicebox and others and they did great commentary during pools but the top 8 ended up with those two clowns for whatever reason.

I am saying KOF was in last year because it had hype GFs the two years before. Any other game would not have been at EVO because the numbers weren't there for the game at various events.

Also I am shocked (but not that shocked) to see that Tokido has only entered 1 game at EVO...

based off the amazon brackets? i entered usf4 and xrd but my xrd pools dont show up so his other ones arent probably showing up either

Hmm, I've got Keoma and a JP named Tararira in this preliminary pool. I'll have to brush up a bit on the Abel match esp since I lost in pools to one at Final Round.

Seems like all the stuff they tried with V backfired, which is too bad, 'cause I really like that game.

Casuals have been vocal about the lack of single player and older players aren't a fan of change in general, but competitively it was the most popular since SC2 and had more entrants than TTT2 when it was at EVO. That wouldn't have been the case if the changes backfired.

All the game needed was an update to keep it going after its first year instead of coming out with Lost Swords.

UNIEL would have done better if it had an official spot at EVO, but unfortunately it doesn't have the backing that Persona does from Atlus.

I think Marvel GF on Saturday night would be good.

That's great to hear. Those Evo numbers seem really low to me. I would have entered at Evo just to try it out.

I'll wait for tonight to actually look at these brackets. That's when they are supposed to go "live". It's ridiculous the numbers for some of this games.

Can't wait to see what the Sunday schedule looks like + salt.

I feel like it isn't too hard to make a schedule that pleases everyone
except Melee fans.

How is T7 more expensive to play? It should be 100y per credit as always, and Namco doesn't have some weird funny money currency like Konami does with Paseli (which is how they get >100y/credit games). Unless you mean for the operator, which I could see happening.

Not really? You don't have to use the feature and it's only probably 200 yen to get the salty runback instead of just putting in 100 and hoping you get matched again.
There's no requirement to use it but it's a psychological play all the game. It's both brilliant and insidious.

Soul Caliber 2 grand finals COLLUSION?
It's been over a decade since this happened and reading about it still pisses me off. What a clownshow that was.

Namco is trying a bunch of different monetizing schemes for T7.

Like accessing the training mode for 5 minutes requires paying up.

As far as Revenge Match, there's a special option that lets you not get your rank demoted but you have to pay double. If you don't care about your rank, then I guess you don't have to pay the premium price.
