UNCHARTED 4: A Thief’s End - E3 2015 - Sam Pursuit Gameplay [HQ now available]

I'm always quite skeptic when journalists say that some "closed door demo" is amazing or something like that... They're always so enthusiast It's quite hard to believe them... but this time they were absolutely right, what we saw during Sony conference was amazing but this... man...

Hard to believe that this isn't even the most epic scene in the game, Knowing Naughty Dogs I expect them to blow our minds even more later on.

How do you know this? In UC2, I considered the hotel scene to be the most epic for me because it was something I was playing through.

Did ND state this themselves in the QA session? Did they indicate that there would be main more cut scenes.

I'm not watching this video and I'm not looking at any gifs, but it seems to me that there was a lot of build up for this sequence, starting with the fun fight to car chase to w/e happens after that. It's not like every fight in the game is going to transition into on going continuous crazy set pieces so I'm going to avoid spoilers so I go in fresh

One is realtime fluid and lighting simulation in a volume and the other is most likely layered animated sprites of an offline effect (what Ryse does on the beach level for example).

Some of effects in Uncharted 4 are presimulated physics in CG program like Maya. You set up a highly realistic simulation in Maya and then export the frames of the simulation as an animation into the game. Then when a condition occurs in the game such as a collision you just play the animation. The smoke looks like pre-simulated physics.

Some of the physics is being calculated by the game engine. The brilliance it is hard to tell what is pre-baked and what is not.

Here is a great excerpt explaining how it was done in Uncharted 2: http://www.develop-online.net/tools-and-tech/how-uncharted-2-set-the-technical-benchmark/0116845

Train level was more impressive to me...

The point is the type of genre film the games take inspiration from and embrace aren't using real-world rules, and being a video game only heightens that. Nate can take more of a beating than a real person would because he exists in a heightened and stylized version of the world. You can either accept that or not.

Not just that, any game that uses regenerative health like Uncharted is incredibly unrealistic.

It's only jarring when there's a huge universe contradiction like in Tomb Raider where they have Lara jump 10 feet in the air on a wall with an ice pick but then have her moan about how she might die of frostbite.

It's still insane to me that Naughty Dog makes all this shit playable. Looking and animating like that. Just straight up insane. I need this game.

After E3, I had Horizon one spot above UC4 in my GOTS ranking, but after seeing this, the games have switched places.

There is Bethesda +10 luck and then there is Nathan Drake Luck. God damn it the amounts of times I said watching the trailer "nope, he is dead"... still I want this game so badly, just announce a release date already.

Train level was more impressive to me...

It was, but the actual crazy ending to it was not playable - it was just a "OMG, that' s how he was saved? LOL"

And I recall that even that ending was spoiled in an extended video (I'm purposely being vague for those who haven't played UC2).

Quick question, what specifically about the train sequence in Uncharted 2 did people love? I mean although I liked it alot with that helicopter part, I just want to know what specific part was amazing since it seems all that people talk about regarding setpieces in Uncharted (although I'd put other sequences, like the Hotel, above it).

OT: Nothing else needs to be said. Speechless, although I didn't expect any less from Naughty Dog. Stunning. Simply stunning.

I didn't care much for Uncharted 4. Drake's Deception made me fatigued but after this video, I'm on board.

I do hope the majority of the game takes place on that island though. Just like Drake's Fortune, but I doubt it, as they wanna travel around the world.

Welp, I've just realized I had never seen a next-gen game before I saw this. I thought I had but I was wrong. Thanks ND for setting me straight :)

I'm with you.

That fire and smoke is CGI Quality, wtf. Nvidia gameworks smoke in Batman AK looks bad now :(.

Eh, it's a very scripted scene as opposed to something that reacts to you moving dynamically in the environment in Batman: AK. If you can walk through the smoke and have it look like that in the game then that is really impressive though. We'll just have to wait and see what they can do.

EDIT: Batman: AK has similar levels of destruction, it's just that sequence is put together so well. I think a lot of what makes Uncharted so impressive looking isn't just the tech, but rather how they use it! The implementation of these amazing set pieces really set it apart for me.

This shit was SAVAGE. The mud stuff. The motorbike chase. ALL ONE SCENE.

It felt like Fury Road's opening. I need a nap after this stuff, goddamn

I GOT GOOSEBUMPS WHEN WATCHING THIS! Yes i'm screaming it was SO. DAMN. GOOD! Uncharted 4 is going to be the perfect cinematic videogame. It has the perfect blend of gameplay and cinematics and that is just so fucking exciting!

It's the sum of its parts, there wasn't really one 20 second sequence that stood out to me, it was getting on the train, fighting bad guys on top of it, hanging from the sides, hopping down and having firefights and fistfights in the tram cars, then seeing the train come into that beautiful lakeside scenery, take out the helicopter with that insane setpiece moment right before you get into the tunnel, then into a snowy environment and taking out a chopper with an anti-air military vehicle, all the while moving a brisk pace? Just plain badass.

All of it just added up into an incredible sequence.

This video goes into detail about why the train level is the best level in UC2

Ahhh I get ya now. I guess it's more of a culmination of the events then, rather than one specific action sequence.

Damn Shin, i'm imagining me playing this beauty at 1080p/60fps......October can't come soon enough

This. Hotel was awesome too offcourse, but that 'holy shit' moment only lasted 20 seconds. Train was awesomeness from start to end.

Rewatched it and yeah it's not as bad as it first seemed. He didn't smash into the concrete pillars like I thought for some reason. No big.

I got caught up with the demo, but missed the Q&A. How was it for those who saw it on twitch? Does someone have a link to it (don't know when ND would archive it)?

The best part is when Sam and Nate smile and laugh after the chase.
All the subtle animations, the expressions... so intense.
Please ND, don't make Sam an asshole and a traitor. I really love when someone nail the friendship/brothership and U4 can be glorious. We alreay had that "twist" two times in 4 games, please don't.
The way they laugh after they survied is incredible.

Can we have a gif of that moment please?

I swear, Naughty Dog must have professional magicians on staff for the kind of wizardry they just pulled off there. The water, the mud, the destructable elements. If U4 came out this year, deciding a GOTY would be impossible between Witcher 3, Fallout 4, Arkham Knight, and MGS 5. Also, that look Elena is given is breaking my heart. DON'T YOU DARE KILL HER OFF, NAUGHTY DOG. ANGRY LETTERS WILL BE WRITTEN IF YOU DO.
