UNCHARTED 4: A Thief’s End - E3 2015 - Sam Pursuit Gameplay [HQ now available]

It's less on-rails than a cutscene FFS. Most other dev's would have a cutscene with QTE's in it, ND choose to make it more interactive. Show me another game that delivers cutscene quality action/framing/animation while still having that amount of control. Most of the time they don't even need button prompts. They are easily the most talented "cinematic" developers out there, and people enjoy those set-pieces even it's just pressing a few buttons...which, by the way, can describe playing literally any game.

Rant over. Looks amazing, can't wait to play it!

Sure I'm excited for it and can't wait to play it, but I'm not sure why everybody hyped it up after e3. It looks like another Uncharted.

If I had one criticism (and really only one) since the demo is mindblowingly good, I still think the guns in Uncharted sound like wet farts. Really wish they would improve upon that - it would definitely help make the gunplay more satisfying.

Agreed. Which is weirder given The Last of Us has some of the best sounding video game weapons out there.

So people complain and say it looks boring/uneventful when they showed the PSX demo but when they show a full on set piece, its on-rails?

Now I know Uncharted fans, (or fans in general here) exaggerate everything on this forum but lets not resort to petty excuses and gameplay shaming to downplay how great this game is coming along. It's the 4th game in the series with more openness than ever before, what more do you want?

Best wishes.

It was only one person calling it on-rails.

I thought the shooting in the first part of the video sounded good. Haven't seen the 2nd half though so I don't know what changed

I think its intentional... The Last of Us and Uncharted go for very different things with their weapons.

I don't necessarily think it should sound like Battlefield with incredibly realistic/terrifying "warlike" gunfire ... just a little more oomph is all. I get that they want to retain the light hearted feeling that these games have, but I've never been a fan of the way the weapons sound in any of the games.

I dont know about that. What made the multiplayer so fun in Uncharted was its engaging gameplay, not so much the "very exciting situations". What more should you be able to do in terms of gameplay? They can add some upgrade system or crafting like TLOU to make it more engaging but the freedom of movement and how the game controls is just fine.

Never played multiplayer, I was talking about single player, I also never played UC1.I like the games fine, but I understand it can't do certain things because of the way the game is presented.

There are easily the best at what they do, after playing TR reboot I realized other people don't have the same touch as ND for cinematic games.

They'll always find something to nitpick, petty as it may be.

Maybe so, but weapons are weapons. Instruments of death. I honestly think a massive number of gunplay complaints would be avoided if the weapons just sounded more aggressive. Loud, powerful sounding weapons add to the satisfaction of shooting.

Wow, I finally got a chance to watch it and that was simply spectacular. Bravo, Naughty Dog..makes Indiana Jones look tame by comparison, jesus christ.

Anyone have a link to the Q&A session that went along with this? I was at work.

Seconding this. Would like to see the QA as well

They definitely sound better than the PS3 games. I do think the hand gun needs a bit of a kick to it. Anyone figured out if that's the 92FS?

The wrinkles and lines on Elena's forehead and the muscle movement underneath...she's been through some shit.
Drake was a mistake, she thought. He's nothing but trash, she thought.

What? They improved guns' sounds drastically. Maybe they need a bit more bass(?), but compared to the other games it's definitely an improvement.

Edit: Reading above it seems I'm in the minority. I don't know, to me they sound much better. Thought the same when I watched the PSX demo.

Really? Admittedly it's been a while since I played Uncharted 3, but the handgun sidearm sounds like the same weak sauce stuff as before to me.

Read my edit. Anyway, I think the handgun sounds less fake now. The AK also sounds better to me. I'm happy with the guns' sounds so far.

Nah Elena loves him even though he doesnt deserves it. Elena ;(

I'm a huge Uncharted fan and felt like the E3 showing on stage was good but not great, but this extended just completely floored me.

UC has always been a cinematic series that blends games and puply movies together and this is taking it to a whole new level, just incredible.

I don't think there is anything wrong with making it on rails or linear. These set pieces help build tension in the story like an action movie. That's what these feels like a dumb summer blockbuster. Every action movie has a spectacular chase sequence. We have never seen anything like this in games. The game play is not deep or challenging, but it doesn't have to be.

Naughty Dog is trying to create something that rival films except we get to participate in the action. This is not a game that tests your skills. Nobody runs around saying I beat Uncharted or I got stuck in Uncharted. The game can be completed in a day probably blindfolded. It's the experience which is unrivaled by both video games and movies.

I'd say Vanquish is a much more engaging tps, the game may suffer is almost all other areas, but it plays very well.

Geez I didn't say it was gunplay terrible, just serviceable. The platforming is also lacking, but it's a compromise for how the game is set up.The games do what they do very well.

Okay, I'll give you Vanquish and Max Payne 3. What else have you got? I think the shooting gameplay in the Uncharted games (2 especially) is more than simply "serviceable". I would call it good based on the reliability of the controls, the enemy AI, character movement, gunplay satisfaction (I agree the weapons could use a bit more punch), encounter design etc.

If it's simply serviceable to you, what else is better? You mentioned the best of the best, but what falls into the "good" category for you?

The platforming, on the other hand, I would describe as serviceable.

"Looks like another Uncharted" is the reason a lot of people are hyped and hyped up this video. Nobody does cinematic set piece gameplay this well.

Just fucking unfreeze me when the game is released please.

This is true for every AAA game sans Souls/Bloodborne though and especially when it comes to third person shooters. What Uncharted 4 is doing is it is beautifully mixing extremely fluid third person combat sandboxes and interspersing it with set pieces without ever sacrificing mechanics or player agency. There is not a single tps demo I have seen so far this gen that showed the level of player agency and combat options shown in that psx demo.

I'd say Vanquish is a much more engaging tps, the game may suffer is almost all other areas, but it plays very well.

Vanquish has extremely lazy encounter and level design. Competent mechanics but yeah nothing beyond that.

Haven't played too many other tps, but I didn't enjoy the shooting nearly as much in UC2/3 as I did in Vanquish.

That's what I meant that all other areas of Vanquish weren't as good as the gameplay. It's still the best tps I've played though, haven't played much of the Gears of War series, people bring those up a lot too.The UC series is still is awesome, it's definitely a sum of all its parts.

i don't get how the car tyre got burnt when drake started shooting at it tbh lol, yeah it's a game, but that doesn't make any sense at all

Obviously drove over some gasoline...probably not unheard of.

Also, as you say, videogames.

Couldn't resist anymore. Watched on youtube :(

That was really well choreographed. I kept telling myself how linear it is and the game still managed to get to me by the final chase sequence. And then Elena comes by to seal the deal for me. Hyped!

I'm just talking about the setpieces, they're relatively long and uninteractive compared to most games. I totally see that people could love this shit, and I'll probably get UC4 myself, but I just don't see Uncharted as a particularly interesting game

Yes I agree, the PSX demo looked far more open and interesting than previous Uncharted gameplay areas imo

Clearly those 15 minutes were uninterractive.
Aside from the fact that you can tackle the market gunfight anyway you want , aside that you still have possibilities during the maze in the city or the fact that you are driving the car when drake is behind the wheel

But yeah , if you ignore all the above it's not that interractive i guess.

right.

So much videogame and dumb blockbuster logic. Nate shoots Jeep driver in the face. Jeep explodes and flips :) But that's how action sequences have alway been. Dumb as hell but it should be fun.

I won't play on launch but it might be fun later on down the line if I'm in the mood for a heavily scripted, pretty average playing action game. The attention to detail is certainly impressive.

Also lol at the UC defense force.

Got off work late and just finished the video on my tv.

Absolutely incredible. Cripes that one hell out an insane demo. Naughty Dog is just on another level, if you don't think so, I don't care....jesus that was amazing on the big screen. I'm going to watch it a few more times now.

I knew you'd cave in lol.

Yeah, FPS is my bread and butter and I could easily name 10 FPS games with better shooting gameply than Uncharted, but that would be cheating. The fact is, for TPS games Uncharted is pretty well done compared to other games in the genre (I take encounter design, AI etc into account here)

Actually one of my favourites is Lost Planet 2, a game with weird controls, strange design decisions and tragic AI. *Shrugs*. I tried pretty hard to love the Gears of War games but ultimately that didn't work out for me... much too heavy for my tastes.
