I've never even played Shenmue.
I demand kudos >:l

considering the way shenmue was announced, unless there's something crazy to generate hype i would think shenmue III is definitely going to fall on the frontloaded side.

I would be shocked otherwise. Shenmue has to be the most frontloaded gaming kickstarter ever. It was announced during the biggest gaming event of the year, and almost all of its fanatic fanbase was likely mobilized in the first 48 hours.

Conversely, there is little reason to be a fence sitter. If you are a fan, you already backed it. If you never played Shenmue before, there is little incentive to get Shenmue 3.

did they manage to get that interview with suzuki?
They got something nice coming and will do what they can to help
Is he the guy who (understandably) flipped out when Shenmue III was announced at the E3 Sony conference?
Haha yeah that's him .. Really nice guy and of any one couldn't tell a huge huge fan of the series lol

But to be fair at the Sony press event I had the same reaction as I bet tons of us here did lol

i disagree with this actually.

we've seen people in here who've never played shenmue before who are interested based on the hype of the fans. i'd bet even a few are just backing out of curiosity. the lack of a HD release might be stopping some people playing the originals right now, but there's enough shenmue media and lets plays out there for people to get a feel for what the game is about and get interested.

i don't think the backer demographics are as insular as you think. the thing about shenmue is that while it was very niche at the time, there are parts of it that can be seen across a broad spectrum of modern gaming, from AAA to indie and even some mobile apps (lucky hit is practically begging to be made into a hyper-addictive phone game). because of that its appeal has broadened.

some people might want to try it for the story. others might want to play for the combat. others just really like some great world-building (ala the witcher).

It was the only reaction I was capable of giving. I'm still having a hard time believing Shenmue III is real.

Yeah you are more than right thinking back to it there was no other reaction I woulve been able to have there was no way to keep it in ..

The hype was so big I jumped $500 in half hour after the press was done

two really cool things about shenmue II where they break the conventions they've set:

. subverting the QTE

for the start of the game and in the original, they teach you the QTE prompts must always be pressed. but then they pull a swerve by having a QTE you shouldn't press in order to teach ryo (and the player) to stay calm in the face of danger. i do find it funny how many people still press the QTE prompt despite being directly told not to. it's a good way to teach players that the game may do unexpected things to keep them on their toes.

. learning a move on your own

pretty much all your moves are learned through practising the button presses. there's one instance in shenmue II where you're given a basic idea of the button presses (i.e being told to dodge and throw at the same time) and then are thrown into a FREE battle to figure it out for yourself. you never properly learn the move until the do it during battle either. i always through that was a great way to get players to associate the controls with ryo's body.

I wonder if Master Baihu will make a return????

I am probably way off but I can see him returning maybe even as an ally rather than foe just simply out of respect for Ryo being stronger than him.

What you guys think?.

Man I can't believe I'm discussing this kinda stuff...

i'm very interested to see if he does return. he was quite a mystery character in shenmue II. just kind of appeared briefly out of nowhere, but provided one of the best battle challenges in the game, and was still a mystery by the end. he's associated with the chi-you-men, but we're not quite sure how.

The machine gun fist QTE on him was awesome, Never did find out what the Kanji meant after landing the KO blow.

I just always assume KTFO lol

To quote Lan DC from the Dojo regarding Baihu

Baihu's role in the Shenmue series has always been a questionable one. From his elaborate design, location of appearance, ability in the Tiger Swallow Style martial art, to the conspicuous line, "Hazuki... I shall remember that name," speculation is ignited within many on whether Baihu could be an important character to be seen again, perhaps even Ziming, as "Baihu" translates to "White Tiger," which is Ziming's rank amongst the four Chiyoumen leaders. However, possible new evidence should indicate that Baihu's importance exceeds nothing more than that of a street fighter.

To learn more read thread here

Although it's been many years I do vaguely recalling French Shenmue fan interviewing Suzuki a few years ago and he hinted at the character potentially being important. Although I could be misremembering.

I've never played Shenmue and never kickstarted a game before, but seeing everyone so happy got me in the giving mood so i went ahead and got the PS4 physical copy.

Haven't gotten to participate in the thread very much yet, my son was born on the evening of the sony press conference!

Can't believe Shenmue III is happening, I can't wait to revisit that world.

Welcome! Hopefully your son is named gui Zhang.

I think this kickstarter will end as a true smashing success, a validation that the shenmue fans out there are loud and proud. I'm sorry Suzuki had to come out and say he wanted 10MM so the chorus of butthashes can hang on to that as some metric by which this will be a failure, but I'm so enthusiastic and happy to see how this is turning out. Thrilled really.

All that "but what is sony doing" stuff certainly wasn't fun but that crew seems to have lost interest anyway.

Well, as a Shenmue fan, I'm used to negativity since many posters have been telling me a Shenmue 3 of any capacity won't happen. Besides, the negativity will never go away due to a well documented and considered skepticism of the Kickstarter/crowdfunding model, and now a lot of that's moved onto Red Ash for better or worse. It'll still come back in bits and pieces as some posters in that thread are slagging this project, but other than Suzuki/Sega saying 'noop, Shenmue III is cancelled', I'm still very happy about this.

On the topic of Shenmue's story, let's not forget this was the original plan for Shenmue's continued stories. There's no freaking way the game could have the story completed by the 3rd game.

Meh, until we get big established companies abusing KS, I'm not going to complain too much about small companies reviving dead/passion projects. Things could be better, but I could say that about humanity in general. We don't live in an idealised world, and it's better to be positive about things than overtly negative.

Not too long ago, the mere mention of Shenmue 3 or DASH 3 is something that would be laughed at.

Do you think that 6 million dollars at the end of the campaign is possible?

Also, with 6 million dollars, what do you think? Can they deliver something similar in size to Shenmue 1 with that money?

Sir, you are the best!

In other news, the $4,000 Lucky Hit Board tier has not been much of a success, has it?
A bit too intrusive, perhaps?

They should add more mid-tier rewards between $1,000 and $2,000.

They could certainly build a world the same physical size as Shenmue I. I'm not convinced they can create a world of 300 fully voiced characters.

If the game is similar in quality terms like Shenmue 1, with the same content but without so many voiced characters for me is more than enough.

In terms of world size, Suzuki said in the twitter Q&A that at $5m he thinks the game will be similar to the scale of Dobuita.

Most projects always get a big final push, but we're talking about a lot of money here.
Hopefully it gets to 7.5m so we can ge the best gameplay possible. Well, according to the stretch goals.
They definitely need to enable backing after the kickstarter is over. I bet there's a bunch of people in here willing to give them money every month, specially if the game starts to develop well.

Backed it. I'm in for $100.

I didn't believe I would EVER pay forward for a game (much less overpay) but Shenmue is the exception. Yu Suzuki shut up and take my money.

Just doubled my pledge.

Today's totals:

Money added - $101,819
New backers - 989

New total - $4,252,338 (current - $4,252,860)
Average per backer - $85.75 (up $1.19 from yesterday)

Fantastic day, everyone!

Only $147,000 until the next stretch goal is met! Even with an expected drop off for Sunday, I bet that gets hit by Tuesday night at the latest. :)

Thanks for posting the numbers. I would of done it but I'm not home right now.

The campaign is going strong. All we need is that paypal option and i think we'll be good on those stretch goals throughout the year.
Yeah they need to put that PayPal link up soon and I mean soon there's many that would keep giving money and even now..

Set up the website keeps us up to date with how much is on the PayPal and keep track of the goals .. The people running it just need to be smart about it keep us engaged and they would have a flow of money dayle for the next year

Shenmue Dojo helped out with the new OP.

All of the stuff regarding Sony has been removed and the OP is now a lot more condensed.

The bottom link has a thread with all of the past news (in case you need to source something).

just backed $100. i am not even that big of a shenmue fan, but the man that gave me virtua fighter 3 earned it

Great new OP! Visually engaging and informative!

On his Twitter Q&A, YS suggested that 5 m would enable something of the scale of Dobuita. So I'm expecting a more compact experience than S2, more akin to the original.

I'm totally fine with this; a small location that is dense with character, characters and things to do is something I can get excited about.

Not counting the harbor and stuff?
