Not counting the harbor and stuff?

Only Dobuita was mentioned. Whether he was using that as a catch-all for the local area or if he was being literal was unclear.

Still, I don't think there's much value to be had in looking for 1-to-1 comparisons; it seems clear that S3 will be more comparable in scale to S1.

i'm thinking about upping my pledge before this ends. i'd love to get the $300 so I could get the signed illustration, but i might just have to settle for the $120 one..

We definitely need to push harder. We cannot be content with $5m, we need to push this through the roof! We only got 12 days left and we need to take advantage of every single day. Screw the last minute dash, we cannot rely on it. We need to go HARD, now!

Ideas for how to push this further? Need better media and social media coverage on what needs to be done.

Just completed Shenmue 1 for the first time. What a great game. Can't wait to get my hands on the sequel! I guess I have some time to find a copy before December 2017.

Haven't gotten to participate in the thread very much yet, my son was born on the evening of the sony press conference!

Can't believe Shenmue III is happening, I can't wait to revisit that world.

How does it feel to have peaked life? :)

Awesome to see people discovering these games for the first time in 2015. Really holds up doesn't it? I'm just struck by how reactive all of Dobuita is. Everyone has new dialogue for new happening. I love watching the weather and seasons change.

I'm on $175 pledge at the moment, but have put aside £300 (~$500), which I'm pretty sure I will be able to free-up before the campaign ends (need all those capsules ;) ).

I really hope Sega take advantage of this situation and get S1 and 2 out - they must know that this is one of the few opportunities they are ever likely to get to cash in on the IP in a meaningful way.

So I haven't been keeping up with the Kickstarter, can someone quickly explain for me whether the village stretch goals add a whole new village or just expand the ones already there. The goals only say additional quests/mini games but a lot of posts seem to imply we won't get those villages unless we hit those stretch goals.

We are getting the three villages regardless. The stretch goals will expand certain aspects of those villages.

At 5 million, the game will be more story oriented, and less open world. A true Shenmue game should be open world. Not like GTA or Sleeping Dogs, but like Shenmue 2. Maybe if we reach 6-7 million, maybe we could provide the rest trough Paypal after the Kickstarter has ended.

Nice article as a foreigner that lived in Hong Kong and China as a young kid in the 90's I have to say Suzuki nailed so many aspects of both the environment but essene of those locations, it's really amazing even after all these years.
I'm a huge fan of the Wong Kar Wai films from the '90s that depicted Hong Kong so vibrantly and viscerally. I think Suzuki definitely captured some of that energy in Shenmue II.

When you talks about games that actually make you feel like you're in that part of the world, Shenmue is still easily one of the best, if not the best.

It's actually my main beef with the AssCreed franchise. You'd think that'd be the perfect franchise to give you a virtual tourism of history. But instead with each passing game, I feel less immersed in that world, and more like I'm in a historical movie-set.

I feel exactly the same. I just want to wander through the streets, talk to vendors, and really TOUCH the world they have rendered so beautifully. Those games are like a museum, strict "look, don't touch" policy.

Shenmue is the opposite. It invites you to get sweaty with everything.

A non profit school in Guilin has pledged 20,000 to the Kickstarter

Whoa, I hope Yu Suzuki adds or does something for that school in the game.

Because that's a not insignificant amount and it feels weird to see a video game get that money instead of the school, so I really do hope that the argument that the school will get more publicity from this and the $20,000 is worth it actually comes true.

Hey everyone, my brother and I decided to contribute $20,000 for the making of Shenmue III. We spent many hours thinking about whether this is a good or bad decision. We spent $10,000 in 2012 to get our school off the ground and that went a long way. Because of our initial $10,000 pledge, the school received an amazing amount of attention in China, social media and gaming websites. I'll reiterate, We are not wealthy! This was a hard decision. We could have given $20,000 directly to building the school and it's programs but we feel that this pledge will lead to more exposure and support than what we could do through other mediums.

For those who don't know our school yet. We are called The "V.E.T. Program" (Volunteer English Teacher). You can find us on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/VolunteerEnglishTeacher?fref=ts&ref=br_tf We teach children and young adults English to help in their educational and career pursuits. Many of these kids come from small villages in the Guilin area and may not have an opportunity to learn elsewhere. You can go to the "about" section on the Facebook page to learn more.

We really need help in reaching our goals. We would love for you to like us on Facebook. We will eventually look outside ourselves and setup a way for donations to be made but we didn't want to distract from the Kick Starter or be overbearing donation hunters.

We decided to make the second $10,000 pledge a character in the game. We don't want to be a character attacking Ryo though. We are going to try and ask Yu Suzuki to let us have one of our Volunteer Chinese teaching assistants be a character in one of the villages. They deserve to be recognized for their hard work. They are volunteers and many of them come from poor rice farms.

Lets give em a like on facebook at least :)

Since KAVINSKY is such a big fan Shenmue fan, wouldn't it be amazing if he did a track for the soundtrack? His retro electro-pop sound would fit right in with Shenmue's '80s setting.

They want Yu to pay a visit to the school sometime, haha. He should definitely do something anyway, even if it's a slight nod to the school in the game somehow. $20,000 is an awfully generous amount for two people who aren't wealthy to contribute to the development of a game. That kind of passion is just incredible.

At the very least they can expect a "like" and future donations from me.

The Shenmue Dojo turned into the happiest gaming forum in the entire internet since mid June. :)

I remembered going down there the day Shenmue 3 was announced just to see what the reactions were. They had a thread called "What have you been doing this past 14 years?" or something like that. Some of the posts there made me teary.

Quick question about how Kickstarter works, if someone doesn't mind answering?

I just pledged $60 for the PS4 physical version (Woohoo!). If say in a week I wanted to pledge more, does that count as a separate pledge, or does the original one get upgraded? Basically I'm just wondering, if I pledge the same again, does that mean I'll be able to get the trial and capsule toy too, or do I get just another copy of the game?

By pressing the "manage" button you can just switch to whatever new tier you want to select, so it won't be a separate pledge unless you do it on another account.

Gotta say, it feels nice to have stretch goals every $200,000 now. Not really looking forward to this gap though on what will be a pretty important stretch.

Happy to have you on board! Glad to have you join us in the thread!

Appreciate that!

I only completed the original back in the day, but I've never played the second. I've just dug out my Dreamcast and original copy of Shenmue, and I'm planning to play through it again on my holidays next week. Also going to pick the second up soon, for either XB or DC, but thought it was more important to fund the third now, and grab the second game later.

I've been replaying the original recently too! After I got used to using the Dreamcast controller again, I really started having a blast.

Be sure to share your thoughts in the thread when you get into replaying the game.

Really can't believe that place lasted this long. It's like Gaming's own personal miracle story.
I know the founder, we talked back when my MGS fansite was affiliated to the Dojo over ten years ago and have stayed in touch since. He is a super passionate Shenmue fan who has never given up hope after all these years.

We often talked about planning for the day Shenmue III would be announced, and what he'd do to help the game in any way he could. It's been a stressful 2-3 weeks so far, keeping up with the updates and trying to push the Kickstarter. I don't think he's been sleeping much!

At a any rate, I am in no way surprised that site is persisting. There are good, passionate fans keeping it alive.

It is fantastic to see the passion all of those guys have. This is the kind of story that just doesn't ever happen.

Honestly, there has been so much negativity around gaming for awhile now. It was amazing to see it dissipate completely (at least in me) during the Sony presser when I saw Last Guardian and Shenmue, back to back.

It really felt like we've entered an era where the voices of fans really can be heard.

Great article.

Intimacy and atmosphere>>>>scale
Real characters>>>>side-quest dispensers
Shenmue>>>> every big budget AAA open-world game that's been released since

Beautifully put, hope you do not mind it being used for a SaveShenmue tweet :) (could not for more text to quote the poster name or link :/).
