Synopsis:
In an alternate world, a small percentage of children are able to manifest superpowers upon reaching puberty. Yū Otosaka, a boy who awakens the ability to temporarily possess others, hopes to use his power to live an easy going high school life. However, he is caught red-handed by the mysterious Nao Tomori and is forced to transfer to Hoshinoumi Academy (星ノ海学園, Hoshinoumi Gakuen?, "Star Ocean Academy"), where he and the other student council members must help students who have trouble controlling their abilities. (wiki)

Main Characters:

Yuu Otosaka - a rude, bad student with the ability to hijack the bodies of others for five seconds. Uses the ability to memorize test answers of better students

Nao Tomori - the hard working but narcissist student council president with the ability to remove herself from the vision of one person at a time.

Joujirou Takajou - a similar character Takamatsu from Angel Beats! who can move at such high speeds that he looks like he's teleporting. However, he's not totally able to control where he stops, so he has to wear protective gear under his school uniform to prevent injury.

Nishimori Yusa - vocalist for the band How-Low-Hello and a medium able to speak to the dead. She uncontrollably channels her deceased elder sister. When this occurs her appearance changes, as seen in the above image, such as her eye color from blue to red. Maeda will be doing lyrics and composing How-Low-Hello's music.

*Special Note from the OP*

Banned Terms in this this thread on top of the normal NeoGAF ToS:
- “KeyShit” comments or any variation of it
- SAO talk or Kirito comparisons are banned as well..
(In other words, let's discuss and have fun with it)

Can I compare it to Code Geass though?

Nice OP btw. You should mention that some people in EU can watch it via Viewster. Unfortunately I don't know the specific regions.

Oh wow I didn't expect an OT for this show. Ill admit I'm a huge Jun Maeda fan, so I was really looking forward to this show. The first episode didn't disappoint, and I'm really interested to see where the story goes. I like the characters so far, MC is a total asshole, but in a good way.

Nice OP Cornbread. The first episode really surprised a lot of people, myself included. Look forward to watching more.

I really don't see why not. Yu is very Lelouche like at the beginning. Not sure how much his character will change over the course of the show though. They did manage to
wipe that grin off his face by the end by laying into him.
Lol.

I thought you've seen almost every anime, I really recommend it though. It's a mecha show with some really "stupid but fun" elements.
Give it a try, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

LOL, I read all the crazy comments on it last months as some Gaffers were running through it, lol.

BTW, I updated the streaming sources (list in on the official website.

You should PM a mod to get this moved to Off Topic instead of community.

I PM'd Duckroll and asked for an assist.

Everything looks promising so far, so let's discuss away as the season goes on.

Added, thanks buddy.

Angry Grimace

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says "does something taste funny to you?"
Lol cornbread you can't set up banned topics in an OP

So is there any backstory behind the production of this show? I've read that it's an adaptation of a 4-koma but that's it.

Is it popular in Japan? is there enough source material for a potential second season?

So you've put lol on the banned term list and yet used it more than anyone else in the thread so far...

On MAL I saw that's an adaptation of a 4-koma but I'm not really sure. Press the related anime tab at the Charlotte MAL page.

Oh. It's not an adaptation of that. Like Angel Beats, it has multiple pieces of media out there for people that want it. Angel Beats has a manga that goes into how the Battlefront is formed but the anime itself is self-contained. I imagine the same thing is happening here. The four-panel thing is something that GsMagazine probably wanted (same company that worked with them on Angel Beats).

Basically, the anime is an original story. Naturally, a four-panel comic strip is easier and faster to put out than an anime, but it was born from the anime production. That's why it came out faster then the show.

Meant more of a joke than anything, a continuation of common themes from the Anime OT, lol.

The "lol" was meant to represent that, but I removed it to avoid confusion, laugh out loud all you want because your gonna cry at some point watching this anyway, lol.

Episode 1

The main character looks so much like Lelouch, even his laugh and douchbag personality.

Let's start a bet on which character is the one going get sacrifice by Key for tearjerking

It's an okay show so far. I'm not liking the character models. They have weird proportions to me.

But in all honesty, if rather be watching Season 2 of Inou Battle

episode one is not bad considering all this new animes showing up

Yeah, something about it just feels good, and makes you want to know more right away. The premise is pretty darn good so far and the fact that Key is involved means they will actually try to attach an emotional value to it, which is very much appreciated.

As long as it's not the below, I can deal with it.
tumblr_nqz9hbAejm1uzwbyjo1_540.gif

im hoping it's her since she was my least favorite thing about the episode :p (that being said even as my least favorite part she wasn't completely terrible, as long as she has less than 3 minutes of screen time in any one episode it will be fine)

though most likely Nao Tomori is dying or something like that and we will find out in a few episodes.

I'm actually hesitant about this since this is made by P.A. Works. Their animes typically has the same slice of life stories just done differently in a way.

Can anyone vouch for the story here?

Oh no...this isn't what I wanted when I said I wanted something like Code Geass.

Story is by Key

Are you sure you arent confusing them for Kyo Ani?
I've watched P.A. Works' animes season by season and they all seemed similar to each other (hanasaku iroha, tari tari, glasslip on one side while true tears, nagi no asukara) . I'm not here to shitpost but is really curious for this anime. Its just that I'm a bit burned out on P.A. Work's animes.

Kyo Ani is another different beast with a similar problem but its for another time and discussion.
EDIT: Since this is by Key, should I expect a tearjerker story? and with this a one-cour anime expect abit rushed storyline?

if you want what will likely be a good model for what this show will be go watch Angel Beats

It was a solid series, a key original series, also animated by P.A. Works' both with script and music created by Maeda, Jun with the sound director of Iida, Satoki

while there will be tearjerker moments it likely won't focus on that.

(I am hoping so bad that charlotte has a super powered idol that gives Girls Dead Monster a chance to cameo in it lol or at least has some music from LiSA)

Ayane Sakura is cleaning up. is your fave even trying?

don't ask me about my faves tho.

I hope Key fakes the heel turn and there's no drama (yeah, right) this should be a slice of life. let the MC act all hammy with cheating and stuff since it's funny. doubt it tho. MC's already in the student council and it sounds totally boring already like cracking down on misuse of powers.

other than that, if something happens to little sis imouto-chan, I will be slain

Yeah, lol' sis is off-limits, but something will happen with all those "incomplete powers"

Like you said, it's Key, so it's going to happen, but since th erected have been tons of comparisons to Angel Beats, I expect something like that..

I'm almost certain this promotional picture has something to do with it

I'm guessing that the people with special powers were a part of some kind of human experiment.

Also Key's thing lately has been making characters disappear at the end instead of outright killing them. Wait, one of the characters can already disappear? Where is this leading?!

Personally I loved all of these shows by PA Works (well, not all, but let's not talk about glasslip here...), so I can't really say that you'll like Charlotte more, but it is a little different from the others. While Charlotte is being animated by PA Works, it's typically more important to look at the figureheads that are writing, producing, directing, etc. Jun Maeda is writing the story, he didn't work on any of the shows you listed. Jun Maeda also writes great music which is a plus. He's talked before about the advantages of writing the story and music, because you get more creative control and can make the music match the emotion of the scene just the way you intended as the writer. The director for Charlotte is Yoshiyuki Asai, who has worked on PA Works shows before, but this is his first time as the lead director, so he might bring something new to the table. In general, if you've watched anything written by Jun Maeda before and didn't like it, I doubt anything will change with this show. If you haven't, then I'd urge anyone to just give it a try for a few episodes, and decide from there. For me the first episode has peaked my interest and I'm quite interested in seeing where the story goes.
EDIT: Since this is by Key, should I expect a tearjerker story? and with this a one-cour anime expect abit rushed storyline?

Has it been confirmed to be one cour? I want to still hold out hope that it's split cour. Also I remember Jun Maeda saying at one point that the story supposedly starts out kinda slow and that it picks up significantly after 6 episodes, with an "after story" part later. I think maeda heard the complaints about angel beats being rushed loud and clear and wants to make sure he doesn't repeat that with Charlotte. But regardless, you should always assume a key story will be a tearjerker.

Main girl is voiced by Iroha

Even more reason to love this show

I love her, and she fits Nao's character perfectly so far.

I'm 100% on team #SisterDies.

She has to be important to the story in some way, she's useless right now.

How could you possibly think this insanely cute comedic relief is useless????

ea3ac0d83d.gif

But seriously, if she dies, I will blame every monster on the internet who wanted her to die.

I'm hoping the MC's little sister dies or otherwise gets a personality makeover. Though I don't think this show will get that serious.

I nly being one season won't allow it get too deep, hopefully, but Key is involved, so they can find a way to make it impactful. Not many leaks online on how the story goes.

Key shows usually start out with comedic/slice of life type stuff in order to get you attached to the characters before they get really serious.

The night and day of Clannad and Clannad After Story alone. I wonder how they will do it in 6 episodes here.

Little sis is awesome.

Yes, she's a cutie and no sigh of extreme Onee-Chan creepy stuff, so it's a good start..
