Last year wasn't really cross gen. The last gen game used the old engine.

Current gen used the old engine with a new coat of paint. It was the same as PS2 > 360/PS3, they didn't radically try changing the engine until they dropped PS2.

You can tell by recreating bugs they haven't fixed in several years.
