Fighting Games Weekly | Jul 6-12 | Freuds Among Us

So going by typical evo standards, SF4 will start at 8:00 pm, kappa.
edit: jesus 3 hours for Melee, that game takes forever..

Melee top 8 did not take that long the last two times, it will not take this long this time either unless all of top 8 is Bo5 lol

edit: also they gave Smash 4 top 8 two hours, I wonder if there isn't some announcement (Marvel also gets 2.5 hours randomly)

It's worth nothing that the tournament in Arizona this last weekend had a crowdfunded pot bonus of about $700 raised by r/mvc3, and they were already talking about setting up one for Evo as well. I don't know if Justin coordinated with r/mvc3 in setting this up - I'm guessing he didn't - but it looks like they are going to use his gofundme instead of creating their own.

Dat typo

Only GFs are Bo5.

Other melee events are Bo5 throughout all of top 8. If you dont like smash you should count yourself lucky they aren't doing that here haha.

Could you clear up some Melty Blood history for me here? Hell I figure I can't be the only one so it'd be neat if a Melty Blood player could break down a little on the game, where to get it and how it works. Especially since Under Night in Birth is so well received.
It's never been a free online release -- this is a pretty common problem with doujin releases in general, as they generally have very limited physical distribution even in Japan and then tend to go poof completely. So it's a classic instance of piracy happening due to distribution issues rather than price. Only recently has there been more a push for digital sales in Japan from places like DLSite (warning: they're not safe for work) and then more recently on Steam internationally.

The original release was a doujinshi release (back when French Bread still made stuff like Queen of Heart, Drill Milky Punch and Ragnarok Battle Offline -- they actually have nearly 20 years of history now) back in 2002. It was not a good fighting game at all, but it was fairly well put together for a doujin release and ended up being absurdly popular (kind of mirroring what happened with the game it was based on, Tsukihime, which was a release by then doujin circle Type-Moon back in 1999). Melty Blood ReACT was an expansion released in 2003 that added some characters and made the combat less ass -- and they had some NRS levels of patching with the doujin releases, releasing about 10 balance patches for each release (it didn't really help the original release, but they at least got most of the infinities out by the end of ReACT.

Ecole (of Death Crimson infamy), for whatever godforsaken reason gets the rights to publish an arcade version of the game, and that ends up being Melty Blood Act Cadenza which comes out in 2005. First version in the arcade and console, with five revisions total, and with a PS2 and PC release as well (PS2 being based on revision A2, PC based on revision B2). The game actually does really damn well in the arcades and manages to sell over 100,000 copies on PS2, although it's still not quite there yet in terms of being a "good" fighting game (although it's still a huge improvement over the doujin releases).

Another revision gets announced and comes out in 2008, Melty Blood Actress Again. This is when they add the multiple variations for each character (they work as a mix of Alpha 3 ISMs and MKX variations, changing system rules AND movesets for each character) and finally get to the point where the game is a legitimately good game. This got a PS2 port in 2009 (Japannnnnnnn) and was the version used at Evolution 2010.

The final current set of releases is Melty Blood: Actress Again: Current Code which came out in 2010 and had a bunch of updates as well (including one that overhauled a ton of system mechanics), and was only ported to PC as a bonus with Carnival Phantasm, which was one of many (many) spin-off series that Type-Moon produced (although technically at this point so is Melty Blood -- they ended up officially absorbing the game's story and characters into canon back with Act Cadenza).

So French Bread busted their ass on this series for a long time (over a decade!) and turned the game from a zero to one of the best damn 2D fighters made last generation. Too bad none of them have ever come out internationally, and none of them ever will because the Type-Moon tax is now criminally insane. ;_; Rumor is that they have a sequel/remake on deck to go alongside the Tsukihime remake that Type-Moon is making... so expect that in 20XX.

And for most people in this thread, that's probably way more than you ever wanted to know about some random anime fighter. :p

I don't agree with Smash 4's placing. I know they're not basing it off on entrants and such but this really sucks for a lot of the players.

I wonder how much of Smash 4's schedule being super rushed is due to them being concerned that it's going to run stupidly long. There's a two hour gap between when Smash 4 ends and when Tekken 7 is scheduled to start. Even then, with a 6 PM start it could run way over and not run into issues (unless they have other exhibitions planned, which may be an issue).

I would even do a 8PM start and just let them run as long as they want.

So right now we're running Yata on a console cabinet at the arcade, one of those weird Xtension rigs or whatever they are. Pretty soon we're going to convert that cab over to PS4 stuff which means no more Yata.

Buuutttt the arcade owner is apparently getting an Astro City with a PC on the inside, so we'll be running Yatagarasu on an old Astro City in Nashville. I'll also get to run Melty Blood on it :D

Another thing is that Tekken should have finished Sat. Night. KI being the last game on Sat is way weird, even with the pot bonus explation.

They have every right to be, EVO essentially shit on them.

Yeah, I don't agree with this schedule. Feel bad for Smash Wii U players with their game getting shafted like that. I guess corporate sponsorships hold more weight than total entrants.

Tekken was supposed to get Friday as a practice day and it's not getting that either.

I foresee gifs and vids...

I'm on the phone, so neither - still:

Yamazaki's anti-air Snake Arms special.

Terry's Triple Geyser - damn satisfying to get all 3 hits.

Captain Commando's Captain Collider - I mean infinitely vertical pillar of energy in front of you.

Daimon's HCF+A, because grabbing them out of the skies feels damn good.

Skullgirls 2nd Encore |OT| The only cromossome that matters is Z

Whomever creates the EVO OT, I hope you manage to include a reference to the KoF XIII side tournament.

Did he stop playing KI? Seems like an odd choice considering how much money is on the line.

Someone who keeps up with him more might know exactly what happened but what I heard was he didn't like the way the game evolved from season 1 to season 2. All that changed was the over powered characters (one of which was his main) were evened out. The guessing game of combo breakers was the exact same when he was playing as it is now.

Don't forget the game's publisher and sponsors need to be pulling strings too.
What's funny is that we can't even say this any more.
Evo is getting nothing for Marvel.

It's not getting sponsors, it's not getting players, based on how the year has shaped out so far, it's not getting viewers either.

Smash community has proven themselves, the NRS scene has not. And Marve,l as much as I would rather watch it over Smash, doesn't deserve the prime time slot over it. Do the right thing EVO folks.

I was about to comment on that last thing. Why the change? That's just super shitty considering like 90% of the entrants would've had no chance to even touch the game before.

And yeah holy fuck for being the second biggest game Smash U really got fucked over.
