Fighting Games Weekly | Jul 6-12 | Freuds Among Us

Sm4sh getting shafted finals time for an arcade only game most ppl won't have played for over 8 hours and a game that has side game #s.

Sucks to be them.

Not to mention the bought slots on Sunday.
 
I do feel for the EVO staff that has to to schedule for all this shit and have to deal with publishers interference and all that. Still heavily disagree with Sat. Schedule.
 
You have over two grand entrants, a community which desperately raised the most amount of money for cancer just so they could be at EVO and they have proven that they are the least moronic community when it comes to BS. What else do they have to do? What else could they do?

Aside from Persona being on Friday instead of Killer Instinct, I don't see it. The games that they're prioritizing are older games.

If this is actually true, you will probably find me dead floating in the Bellagio fountain Sunday or Monday morning. D: And I would expect Tekken 7 top 8 to be pretty good, since it'll be full of Japanese and Korean players who actually have a fair amount of experience with the game.

Yeah, publisher support matters, but it is what it is ultimately. You work with what you have.

At this point, its probably more on Nintendo to pony up some cash for that Finals spot. Because, you're absolutely right, these entrants showed their support by signing up and are being squeezed through the meat grinder for their overwhelming numbers. It puts a damper on the future for their willingness to cooperate with EVO at any and all pending years.

Tekken and KI all got huge pot bonuses.


But you are right, I would have put Tekken last on Sat myself, and put KI on Friday with Persona.

create their own smash grand tournament and drop evo for good. i'm sure those guys could probably raise a ton of money for the grand prizes too. curleh is this weekend right?

Apex adding other fighting games is a recent thing and they still great those games as side tournaments (which I disagree with.)

i already called anybody who donates to this thing a chump. r/mvc3 donated to bt angelics marvel tourney last week but at the very least he posts there and has even played people on there when streaming. i still wouldn't have donated a dime to the tourney but at least i can see why maybe they would. what is anybody getting out of donating to this evo pot?

Me thinks that might cause a whole host more problems than it actually solves.

Apex is really the best choice.

Also, Apex still treats Smash as its primary Tournament ender, even though they have things like Marvel and Street Fighter. Is it wrong for them to do that? No. Just like I think having Marvel and SF be the closers for EVO is perfectly acceptable, despite numbers/hype being what it is.

I do think corporate sponsorship does play a part, which is why KI is in its position over Smash 4, but the bigger reason is because the evo organizers want to give priority to streaming the big 2 capcom games (SF4 and MvC3) and their semi finals.

Friday is the first day of evo. The only way they could schedule it so they are able to end with SF4 semi finals on the main stage, is if only one game were to conclude that day (Persona). If they had two non SF4 games conclude that day, they wouldn't be able to finish the day with SF4. Smash 4 gets pushed to Saturday morning, despite having a good number of its tournament already finished Friday instead. It can't take a later spot on Saturday either, because Marvel semi finals is prioritized, and they already have to conclude Tekken 7 and KI before Marvel 3 gets to that point in the tournament.

I don't think Nintendo cares enough about tournaments to throw moneyhats around. Maybe if Bill Trinen was in charge or something then yeah it'd probably get bigger support.

Generally speaking, the only reason I like Persona is because there's a character I like in it, Ken and Koromaru. I was quite salty about the first version of the game because I felt it was pretty poorly thought out in regards to character design. It's still kind of poor but the balancing and changes has kind of made it a little better through the life span of the game. Still plenty of dumb in it, i.e. Narukami, but it's fun to play now.

With Marvel, I don't find it fun. I don't like that it's a game that focuses so much on 1 touch kills, I don't like that I can't whatever team I enjoy without having the synergy for 1TK, I don't like having a comeback factor that basically means that whatever I earned can go poof in an instant. I also don't really find the cast list all that interesting, definitely more so when I factor in the character tiers.

If I had to compare them directly, I like the neutral, game systems, and combos in Persona way more than I do in Marvel. The only thing I'd say Marvel has in it's favor is that it's a team game but for the aforementioned reasons, it goes to waste.

Mind you, I love Marvel 2 and heavily enjoyed TvC. So it's not like I don't enjoy the VS setup but Marvel 3 basically has nothing I enjoyed about the previous games.

It really is, should have swapped Melee and sm4sh times on Saturday, because Melee has a Sunday slot..
