Fighting Games Weekly | Jul 6-12 | Freuds Among Us

It really is, should have swapped Melee and sm4sh times on Saturday, because Melee has a Sunday slot..

Even 2pm isn't any better. It's the 2nd biggest game at Evo, it should be on the main stage in the evening. Hell, it should be on Sunday. I kind of understand giving melee that spot but disrespecting Smash 4 like this is infuriating.

You have over two grand entrants, a community which desperately raised the most amount of money for cancer just so they could be at EVO and they have proven that they are the least moronic community when it comes to BS. What else do they have to do? What else could they do?

That fundraiser was on behalf on Melee, and, Melee finals have a prime spot on Sunday

Smash can drop Evo and it would be far worse for Evo than Smash at this point.

Gosh, how will EVO survive without Smash? It's never had to do that before.

EVO got to this point on the backs of non-Smash games for the past decade.

It's kind of strange to hear people talking like EVO would be nothing without it.

It's two different genres/game styles, but then again I wasn't expecting you to get that.
It's the same camera/control system and it works fine in both games. It's like how MGSV and Vanquish both use the same camera system but are different games yet the camera works in both. Or like how 2D fighters and side scrollers use the same camera.

On the Smash 4 thing, it sucks that it's that early on a Saturday. Should've been Saturday night. Really wondering what the decision was on that.

This is the first EVO where in a while where I had to hold my money hat phrases. Smash 4 and Marvel 3 at those slots cannot be explained by money hats whatsoever.

i already called anybody who donates to this thing a chump. r/mvc3 donated to bt angelics marvel tourney last week but at the very least he posts there and has even played people on there when streaming. i still wouldn't have donated a dime to the tourney but at least i can see why maybe they would. what is anybody getting out of donating to this evo pot?

I don't have anything against Justin, but come on... Even with him not getting any split, how can you demand that?

Your not asking to increase the pot with the intention to make more people enter the game (Angelics situation I guess...). Obviously registration it's over.
This is just cuz "Hey, Mahvel it's the only game despite Smash that doesn't have a pot bonus". "We aren't earning enough money".

If you think you're getting less money that you deserve, speak with the organizer. Easy as that. Let them now why you should get a bit more prize pool at the tournament.

Also if I'm not mistaking, wasn't Justin giving his wristband to his twitch subscribers? Can someone confirm that? Cuz it seems they're 20$ expensive now...

I don't think they made the right call. Smash 4 is very new and already has the entries and prior viewership to justify primetime.

Though the argument against a franchise having two finals in one day isn't to be ignored either.

I don't think there would be a ton of complaining if SSB4 got the prime time Saturday slot, to be honest.

There will be some Yatagarasu setups at Evo and I will be glued to them (getting paid to do so). Come by and try it if you're on the fence!

Remember the days when Smashed looked down on EVO because they had MLG? Then begged to get into EVO when MLG dropped their ass? Lol....

If Smash were to leave EVO it would do nothing but validate what everyone said that EVO shouldn't have let them back the 2nd time.

People seem to forget this is the 2nd go around with Smash at EVO. The first time it didn't work out and Smash had MLG to fall back so they were being arrogant as fuck. They didn't gain humility until MLG said peace... here we go again.

Watch SF4 and SFV both be on Sunday at EVO 2016.

Or and Marvel before the final game because tradition/hype/last EVO viewer numbers/bias etc.

I was gonna play him but RockTurtle ran away with a win and got me salty. Besides, I don't play Gief anymore, I'm a changed man.

You must be really bad if Mes gets you salty. Mes is like the first enemy in an rpg you encounter during tutorial. A couple of hits and he's dead.

You guys are being ridiculous. You find a game that brings in 1900+ entries next year. Until you do, its asinine to pretend that Smash 4 didn't get into EVO on their own merits.

So it seems that my first match in Xrd is Huber, which sounds like a familiar name. I honestly haven't played Xrd in a while, since I basically signed up a long time ago when registration first opened up, so I honestly don't feel any attachment to the game atm but I won't be a no-show since I know how it feels when people are waiting for others to show up. I do want to look at the schedule of side tourneys and things to do at Evo. There's probably going to be a good amount of overlap since there seems like a decent amount of things to get done in such a short amount of time.

It's easy. SF4 and UMvC3 semi finals take priority.

Look at the schedule. The design is basically, "complete x tournaments before the capcom games get to their semi final stage so we can stream them"

They are on different streams though so how does that explanation make sense?

Also WWWAAAYYYY too much time is being spent streaming Marvel pools when those will be mostly 3-0 body bags. Things won't get interesting until at least pools are over.

Would Evo survive? Of fucking course, but if Smash goes away it's taking almost 4k entries with it. No matter what you replace it, nothing is reaching those numbers.

why are people getting mad by the umvc3 pot bonus thing? Between that and the marvel bounty its clear that he is just trying to save his game, and he isnt taking a cut. Why would you hate on that lol

Or does this just go back to being mad that marvel is #2

It's never been a free online release -- this is a pretty common problem with doujin releases in general, as they generally have very limited physical distribution even in Japan and then tend to go poof completely. So it's a classic instance of piracy happening due to distribution issues rather than price. Only recently has there been more a push for digital sales in Japan from places like DLSite (warning: they're not safe for work) and then more recently on Steam internationally.

The original release was a doujinshi release (back when French Bread still made stuff like Queen of Heart, Drill Milky Punch and Ragnarok Battle Offline -- they actually have nearly 20 years of history now) back in 2002. It was not a good fighting game at all, but it was fairly well put together for a doujin release and ended up being absurdly popular (kind of mirroring what happened with the game it was based on, Tsukihime, which was a release by then doujin circle Type-Moon back in 1999). Melty Blood ReACT was an expansion released in 2003 that added some characters and made the combat less ass -- and they had some NRS levels of patching with the doujin releases, releasing about 10 balance patches for each release (it didn't really help the original release, but they at least got most of the infinities out by the end of ReACT.

Ecole (of Death Crimson infamy), for whatever godforsaken reason gets the rights to publish an arcade version of the game, and that ends up being Melty Blood Act Cadenza which comes out in 2005. First version in the arcade and console, with five revisions total, and with a PS2 and PC release as well (PS2 being based on revision A2, PC based on revision B2). The game actually does really damn well in the arcades and manages to sell over 100,000 copies on PS2, although it's still not quite there yet in terms of being a "good" fighting game (although it's still a huge improvement over the doujin releases).

Another revision gets announced and comes out in 2008, Melty Blood Actress Again. This is when they add the multiple variations for each character (they work as a mix of Alpha 3 ISMs and MKX variations, changing system rules AND movesets for each character) and finally get to the point where the game is a legitimately good game. This got a PS2 port in 2009 (Japannnnnnnn) and was the version used at Evolution 2010.

The final current set of releases is Melty Blood: Actress Again: Current Code which came out in 2010 and had a bunch of updates as well (including one that overhauled a ton of system mechanics), and was only ported to PC as a bonus with Carnival Phantasm, which was one of many (many) spin-off series that Type-Moon produced (although technically at this point so is Melty Blood -- they ended up officially absorbing the game's story and characters into canon back with Act Cadenza).

So French Bread busted their ass on this series for a long time (over a decade!) and turned the game from a zero to one of the best damn 2D fighters made last generation. Too bad none of them have ever come out internationally, and none of them ever will because the Type-Moon tax is now criminally insane. ;_; Rumor is that they have a sequel/remake on deck to go alongside the Tsukihime remake that Type-Moon is making... so expect that in 20XX.

And for most people in this thread, that's probably way more than you ever wanted to know about some random anime fighter. :p

Oh wow. I had no idea they had so much effort poured into Melty Blood. Thats a ton of new revisions, system reimagines and effort across a whole decade for anyone. Its pretty inspiring really.

Thanks for this. I'm gonna push harder knowing that this is how something that became a major name in the FGC as the Doujin that could actually happened.

what you're looking at isn't a stream schedule, it's a tournament schedule.

usf4 will probably be on capcom fighters until semi finals.

I'm personally not mad but I find it ridiculous. I may as well just donate to justin champ and Chris g. Also, pot bonuses isn't going to "save" this game it isn't going to generate hype for it either.

I don't think that's actually a stream schedule, just a schedule of events going on at the same time.

It just seems like a ploy by the gods to boost up the winning pot as it's by far the lowest of all the games at EVO (no bonus pot from Capcom/Marvel).

This is essentially free money into the pockets of ChrisG and FChamp who will be splitting anyway.

In any case this is not even close to being as scumbaggish as announcing a kickstarter at your conference. But a hustle is a hustle so it's whatever.... don't get hustled.

I also think Justin has it wrong in that adding more money to the game makes it more hype or it will light up a fire under people's ass. The bounty is more interesting but it's also following the same thing. I respect that he's at least trying and it's better than online warriors laughing about dead games.
