Steam Controller trailer, $50

Do some research. It basically has one.

Shit. How did Valve forget? If we act quickly enough they might be able to throw one on the back somewhere.

Fantastic! A combo of sarcasm and belittlement!

Anyway, from glancing at the Steam controller hands-on impression, I've figured that the general idea is that GAF is too hip for D-pads in 2015 and that the haptic d-pad is more that enough! Thanks guys! Fantastic discussion!

Well, the Super Meat Boy creator thought the haptic feedpack plus "little nubs on the controller" should be enough to simulate a D-Pad. And that was with an early prototype.

I preordered mine right when it went up. I've been so pumped for this controller. I can't wait to sit on my couch and play Civ and Endless Legend with a controller. It'll also be interesting for Wii emulation. I've messed around with mapping the PS4 touchpad to the IR/pointer, and it worked fairly well. Being able to take advantage of the two pads on the Steam controller, as well as the left and right paddles on the back, will make for some interesting control configs.

It's literally the first thing discussed about the controller in basically every thread on it for the past two years.

I didn't mean my comment as a personal attack, just a riff off the idea that no one had noticed it before.

Hardware page now states 15% stock left, if anyone is on the fence about pre-ordering. The 15% presumably covers both Steamrollers and Link.
This is a fantastic name for the Steam Controller! Why haven't Valve themselves named it like that?

Do we know if the Steam Controller can turn on the Steam Link remotely? Was hoping since the Link has "Internal Wireless Steam Controller pairing capability" they would build that little feature in.

Looks like I can't preorder it in Taiwan but the page exists on my wife's account which means I will be able to get it when it is fully released.

Better be no early adopter badge for it lol.

Preordered mine. I'm a couch PC gamer, and I currently use a DS4 which works great, but I can't wait to be able to properly play titles like S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Pillars of Eternity, FEAR, Cities: Skylines, This War of Mine, Diablo 3, Starcraft II, ANNO 2205, etc..

I'll be curious to read how people fare in competitive RTS matches with it, especially SC2. I'm no high end pro player or anything, but kb+m work so well for it, I wonder if the Steam Controller would be good enough not to be a burden playing the game and fast enough to not get slaughtered.

I'd love to play some SC2 on a big ass HDTV on my couch if it's good enough for that.

Gonna buy one and use it exclusively on gog. 😴

So this is a pretty dumb question, so forgive me.
Is it, that it will ship on the 16th, or it'll be delivered on the 16th. ?

Already preordered the Link + Controller when they initially went on sale, but decided to order another controller for multiplayer stuff. October can't come soon enough.

So how do you all think this will be for FPS games?

I am very hopeful as I dont like playing FPS games on PC because m/kb is superior. Do you think this will make it a little bit more even matched online FPS with some practice?

Another question

I'm going to want to chat with my friends on steam while using Valve Link. So does the Link work with headsets? And how are we plugging them in? Consoles use their controllers for headsets because you dont want a cable going from the console to you.

So any information on any of this?

I think it'll be better than a standard controller, but with games like CSGO and upcoming arena shooters (e.g. Unreal) it still won't really make you competitive except at a low level with games that have skill based matchmaking.

Games with console fps mechanics (e.g. Battlefield, Titanfall, CoD, etc) - I think it should be good for - although I think you can remain quite competitive on PC even with a standard controller on those types of games.

I ordered mine when it said 1%. Hope it still ships in October.

When you go to https://store.steampowered.com/account/store_transactions - and then click on 'View Shipment Details' on the Steam Controller purchase entry - you should see if you're getting the November or October batch.

It wont be as good but it will be a hell of a lot more accurate and faster than a thumb stick.

When playing thr old blood the other day i switched my thumb to the ps4 touch pad on a couple of the turret scenes because its so much faster and more accurate. Its not the best on that controller because of the touch pads possition though.

I have also played fps games on touch screens and the one good thing they have is aiming speed and accuracy. Its problems are everything else such as pressing digital buttons while aiming.

I hate using mouse and keyboard for games these days because of some back pain issues i suffer from so this controller might be the answer i have been waiting for.

I believe that the touch pads can be clicked in any direction, i.e. it can act as a big ass circular dpad. Not ideal for some games sure, but that's not really the problem it's trying to solve. It's more of a stop gap for games that have no controller support at all on PC. I for one plan on playing Mass Effect again on PC with this thing.

hmm, Ive actually been playing UT4 the passed few days so Im hoping it will work well for it. But with the speed of the game i could see why it wouldnt. Ill have to wait and hope.

I pre-ordered mine on 1% and its shopping October so id assume that is the case for all people who got it on 1%.

Yeah, at this point that's the only real ding against it.
I have really stubby thumbs and prefer concave sticks.

On a positive note, it has the same textured ring with ridges around the edge of the stick that the Xbox One controller uses (which the DualShock 4 does not use).

I tend to rest my thumb on the side of the stick, as opposed to on top of it, so that ring is more important than whether it is convex/concave.

I ended up swapping the sticks on my DualShock 4 with Xbox One sticks for this very reason. My thumb kept sliding off the surface in Bloodborne.

Yep i noticed that too.

Ahhh. Cool cool.

I tried something similar, but the 360 stick was a little too big for the PS3 pad.

Spotted this a blog post on Reddit with impressions and details of the Controller

Seem to be quite a positive write up; the controller itself has shaped up very well, but right now without a community behind it to help with providing strong bindings, it can require a lot of fiddling to find good solutions for some games thanks to the large amount of customisation and no real guidance.

I'm pretty sure the level of detail in those settings plus the level of obsessiveness that at least one person has about almost every single game out there will result in a great set of community profiles.
