some of you guys are being really weird
youre upset that not everyone will be able to get a couple little easter egg/fan servicey conversation unless they pay? look it up on youtube if youre that worried

this is a perfect way for them to sell stuff to the core fans that isnt expensive to produce, so they can get some more money
fun little unimportant rewards like this are exactly what they should be doing

yeah I agree, i mean this is a reward to people who have faith in the project from the get go

Yeah I agree

From what I understand Shenmue 3 can exist completely on its own since Ryo is in China.

I do not like this either, even if I am pledging enough for most in-game items. I hope others will be able to get the items in future DLC at least. Although it is not surprising that Shenmue 3 will try to be Star Citizen to get more funds I guess.
If it helps them make an overall better game (especially as far as basic game elements like combat and areal sizes are concerned), it's probably a decent trade-off. Shenmue III needs a good budget to work. Though I greatly respect developers like Harebrained Schemes who resisted putting stuff like that in their last Kickstarter.

I dislike the phone call reward. Each person who buys this game should have the same experience.

A main thesis of the entire series is keep your friends close. This is more relevant than you are suggesting.

At my absolute max now, pretty excited that I'll have a tiny way that I'm in the game. :)

That is easy to say now but what if Shenmue I+II HD Remaster is released? I think the Shenmue-games were especially fun to 100%, I usually do not even bother with that in other games. It is a bit worrying.

Regarding the $80 tier, I'm on a higher tier so it doesn't matter to me personally but I can see how others would be annoyed. If I was on the $60 I would no doubt upgrade so from a business standpoint I think this was a smart tier to add.

it's just easter-egg content for the hardcore fans. it's so non-consequential to the main story that it might as well be non-canon. i doubt it'll be anything more than the hidden phone conversation between joy and guizhang in shenmue II.

worst case scenario? you'll have to watch the conversations on youtube after they release. for all we know, it's a one-time use item. imagine how tough a choice it'd be to pick who to call!

Just had a random thought: Imagine putting the GAF logo in a Lucky Hit board. That'd be cool.

Maaaan... that $80 reward sounds sick for some reason, even if I have never played Shenmue before. I'll think about upping my pledge though it's prolly already pushing my wallet a bit.

The phone card is a great idea for hardcore fans funding this game. Hopefully this means the original voice actors can be added to record these phone calls! Would be great.

Well, I hope no hardcore-fan miss out the phone card. While that is more of a fun treat for fans I think the technique scrolls are more important for people that enjoy to 100% or, like me, really loved to collect and master all moves in the earlier games. $800 is just not gonna happen for me.

They should add a $49 Digital phone card edition.

i don't think that would work in their favor

the whole point is to get people to pledge more than 60 bucks

Really upset with that $80 reward. That's like $50 DLC. I'd like to have that in the game but I don't want to part with $80. :(

kickstarter isn't a store
you're not buying 50 dollar dlc

it's just a reward for donating money to their project. you can't just 1:1 compare the rewards to the monetary values of the funding tiers

I LOVE that $80 reward! I hope we'll get to also call Tom! I can't wait to see what all those characters have been up to since Ryo left Japan.

My hype just keeps rising!

It's pretty much on disc DLC unlocked for pledging an additional $50. This is the kind of thing you should get just for kickstarting the game at the digital copy level.

The phone card reward doesn't really bother me, although I'd prefer it were open to all and the Kickstarter version was a special message for the backer. e.g. anyone can call Fuku-san, but use the unique phone card and get a different call where he thanks you for backing or something.

Yeah, we've got to raise funds to make the game in the first place. The messages will be online about a second after people get the game.

there should be a digital equivalent of the phone call dlc tier, that I agree with, but this is a reward for those willing to take a bigger risk in funding with the game

yeah and they also "sold" a bunch of knockoff jackets for 4 grand a piece going by your logic

stop comparing the reward tiers to their "prices"
people are insufferable in kickstarter threads sometimes

this this this this

"on-disc $50 dlc!" don't make me fucking laugh

Yep. Can already see this narrative forming.

The phone card is awesome and a great reward for long-time Shenmue fans to see what their favourite characters are up to. I'd be glad to throw in a little extra to help fund the game and get that in return as a fan of the series.

The jacket isn't game content. The $80 reward is content that should be part of the $29 package, IMO.

Right? Rewards are just that. Rewards for funding at a certain level. You're not buying shit. Item price is redundant as you're not buying items, you're basically pledging money and they're giving you a thanks in return. This logic always baffles me.

Oh neat, people found something new to hate on.

Yeah, I kinda take back what I said. Sorry if I threw gas to the fire.

KS and preordering are not the same. You're putting money on a project that wouldn't exist otherwise, preordering is done for a game that will come out.

Should KS users be rewarded for believing in the project 2 years before it's even out? Yes. How should they be rewarded? That's up to the developer, not the users.

Yeah, you have a point. At the same time though, KS clearly encourages projects to be structured in a store-like way. That's probably why it has found so much success in the crowdfunding space. It gets people to donate by putting the "what's in it for me" front and center. You're right that reward levels shouldn't always be compared directly to prices. I'd have to disagree though, that "KS is not a store". Most projects (at least in terms of games I've seen) are getting backers via glorified, risky preorders.

the thing is, it's the usual suspects/driveby posters who are always there to start twisting the narrative. then, news outlets pick up on it.

well this is getting shut down here and now. we're not going to let some junk news outlet beat us over the head with lies about what the phone card tier is.

it's exactly what shinobi says it is. it's something for the fans to give them incentive to pledge a little more. nothing more, nothing less. people actually buy dlc endings and characters/expansions/items/stages that fracture the player base in multiplayer games, and somehow getting the hardcore to pledge a little extra to get an optional conversation is beyond the pale of locking out content? naw.
