SHENMUE 3 kickstarter (PC/PS4) - FINAL DAY - NEW KS RECORD GO GO GO!

Eh, I won't attack anyone who is legitimately upset about the $80 tier, but it's just minor bonuses for people to pledge $80 or more. It will not affect your game at all.

Didn't All the other kickstareters have some exclusive features for higher pledge tiers too ? Like a new weapon, ability ... Etc. What makes this so different now.

Does anyone know what they mean by a "signed picture" in the $1500 tier? I assume it is a self-photograph, with a signature? Would rather be clear on it before finalizing though.

Yeah, I'm under the impression your photo will be on the wall and signed. Not sure in what context though. It seems like your name will be in the Choubu-Inn guest register too. So maybe you will be like a VIP who passed through Choubu and the dock worker took a pic of you for their wall? Hahaha

Let's not demean anyone's financial contributions to this Kickstarter, kay? We're all helping out in our own way.

At the end of the day, this is a Kickstarter, and the reality of it is that the rewards are there with the goal of generating development funds. I can understand the position of the ones who wish it weren't locked to KS at the $80 tier, but I also understand their position of wanting to figure out as many avenues as possible to increase as much of the funding with minimal investment.

To me, for the final product to get more money and become a better product is more important, so it doesn't matter. Would I had preferred they didn't need to do this? Sure. But by that same logic, I wish SEGA was funding this with a blank cheque.

We live with what we get. And if this results in a boost that allows Shenmue 3 to become as close as possible to how Suzuki wants it to be, some exclusive backer DLC is nothing.

Oh hey an extra bonus for me since I've already pledged more than that.

I'll up my pledge to $80. Nice little incentive. If people want to be jaded by this then that is their right. But no one is forcing you to back it.

I don't remember a big fuss about Bloodstained's special whip sword only available to $60+ level backers.

Most don't, as far as I know. The project I quoted above, The Lost Pisces, had a bunch of backer-exclusive content that would only be available to people who pledged $600 or more, but that was a minor point in the grand mismanagement of that campaign.

I generally don't have a problem with DLC in general, but I dislike its inclusion at arbitrary tiers in any campaign for no discernible reason (and this is coming from someone who backed the $29 tier). Just because I haven't backed at $80, doesn't make me any less of a fan than the next person.

One campaign I thought did things right was Bard's Tale IV. People who backed in the first two days got an extra game. There were emulated versions of the original games added for anyone who backed at a certain tier. A minor DLC was added for free through social achievements.

People complained about those too.

Bloodstained had a KS exclusive boss for $80.

Just saw the new rewards. I guess that means Gui Zhang did not follow Ryo after all. Tsch! How long does it take to get that leg fixed, faker!

No, but there was a big fuss about locking a special boss (IGA) to the backers only.

I feel like this is one of those issues where both sides are pretty easy to see:

Pro: Physical rewards and the like are expensive to produce, which means less money going towards the game. Phone conversations are relatively cheap for them to produce, don't really affect the overall flow of the game, and are a nice bonus to be able to hand out and be able to hand out as a reward for people pledging a certain amount. It's also not the first content used as a reward (scrolls, outfit stuff, etc).

Con: It's crazy to think that all 'true fans' (whatever that means) will be able to back at a level where they get the calling card, and it's understandable that folks who can't are going to be upset about it. 29->80 is a pretty massive jump for some folks to manage. And

The bit I'm struggling with right now - if they're going to add something new in game as a reward for higher tiers, what would have been better? Assuming that scrolls/costumes/etc are off the table since those have already been done.

I'd rather it was just part of the game personally.
Before today, it wasn't. Having already pledged to a tier including this reward, this was an additional bonus for me. For you, the game hasn't changed, or gotten worse. It's just this sounds like the kind of fan service easter-egg thing that would be in a game by default.
I can see how people are conflicted about exclusive content like that. I am a bit myself. But I didn't use the phone in Shenmue 1 anyway (mainly because dialing was a pain).

We have to ask ourselves what is more essential: getting some unimportant phone conversations (that we can later watch on youtube anyway), or reaching those stretch goals that unlock more important stuff for everyone.
Yup. Pretty much. It's arguably questionable, but it's such a minor thing and the increased funding provided by this tier will help improve the game everyone's receiving. I too think that is more essential than the concerns voiced regarding this reward.

No, but there was a big fuss about locking a special boss (IGA) to the backers only.

Not necessarily, Gui Zhang could show up later in the game giving Ryo the opportunity to call him up earlier to see how he's doing.

Laughable. Im sorry I don't have hundreds of dollars lying around to put towards the project to show proper interest and support!

I don't mean to fault anyone who doesn't have much money to give but nearly every game is released at $60. You're getting a game that is likely to have tons of content for half of the price it should be. I don't see why you should get upset that they are giving fan-service to people who pledge above and beyond the price of a game at $80.

Damn good question. The content is - in my opinion - too small to be called DLC. A couple of spoken lines are a nice gimmick and I believe it is a good reward and a nice addition for higher tiers. I welcome it.

Ryo and Nozomi need to further their relationship. Hopefully we can get the following pledge tiers for in-game content:

$140 - CANADA AIR TICKET: 1 Week in Canada
-- Nozomi will pay for a return flight to visit her in Canada in this special in-game side quest.

$150 - CONDOM VENDING MACHINE
-- Just like soda but condoms! Make your visit to Canada extra memorable by making your choice of condom at the Hotel Canada bathrooms before reuniting with Nozomi.

Don't judge a person by how much or how little money they pledge. Everyone is in a different financial situation and value their money differently to others. A $5 pledge is just as welcome as a $10,000 one. We're all supporting the Kickstarter and that's what matters.

I sympathize very much but if the campaign is run well, backers will get the chance to upgrade up to a certain cut off point closer to launch which is still far away. Should be enough time to save what you'll eventually want to pitch in. That they're still not offering Paypal yet is a bit alarming in that regard, but I'm sure they'll get that sorted out. We all have lots of time until they have to stop accepting backer money.

For some it's a philosophical question. They'd rather it was something that wasn't in game at all. Maybe a keychain. But really it's a pretty minor point. It makes sense to have minor content like this locked on the KS. I used to think it was bad too, but since you are being asked to put your money 2 years in advance in something that might ultimately be not great. (nonsense I say this IS GOING TO BE GREAT) then it makes sense to reward those people with these kinds of things as a token of thanks.

I can tell you're going somewhere with this, but I can't piece the puzzle together.

A bit late I suppose, but I just saw this reaction video of two Japanese lads watching the Shenmue 3 reveal and had to share it with anyone here who hasn't come across it yet. All the reaction stuff I've seen has been from filthy gaikokujin, so it's nice to see Suzuki's homeland representing for once. Warning - contains tears and neck braces.
The guy on the right's DELAYED reaction is priceless. You can see the gears s-l-o-w-l-y spinning.
Thanks for sharing this.

lol I'd love to see some of these for Final Fantasy 7. You have any of those anywhere? I only know of the one with the guy wearing the Versus XIII shirt

The $800 tier is odd to me. I get that they will be putting your name on a temple, but what I don't understand is it goes on to say "Find your name tag on the temple and recieve a special Technique Scroll!".

How will the game know which one is mine when I find it? Because it sounds like you have to find your own name to get the scroll, right? How will the game know I'm that player? lol. Unless I'm reading it wrong.

Was thinking that too, maybe you need to enter your name for the save file when you start the game?

I've never been a fan of in-game rewards for Kickstarter backers. I'd much prefer this stuff to be available to everyone, even people who buy at launch. ..but I realize that this sort of thing brings in development money so I overlook it as long as it's not a big feature that others would really miss.

Besides, Shenmue 3 already has several in-game rewards for high-tier backers. This is nothing new.

Was thinking that too, maybe you need to enter your name for the save file when you start the game?

But even then, couldn't anyone be able to input that name to get the scroll? These are meant to be exclusive to those select people. Not sure how that's possible without a unique build of the game.

Very disappointed by this new S3 WORLD TELECOM reward.
I don't like it when in game content is locked away from some users forever no matter the reason. I felt the same way when Bloodstained added the backer exclusive items and boss.
Everybody should be able to play the 100% complete game.

You might get a unique code to unlock the extra stuff in your game.

I guess the easier option would be for you to receive something like a dlc code that you would use on the psn or on steam.
Then when you would arrive at that temple and look at your plate you would receive the scroll.

argh that $80 is tempting, but I don't know if I can really justify it - I haven't played the first two so I doubt I'd gain a lot from it anyway.

I feel you, I'm in the same position. Having not played the games, I don't think I would get anything out of it...but if Sega re-release the games and I play them, I can envision a scenario where I'll be kicking myself for not putting in the extra bill now.

Still hoping that they can get Sega to verbally commit to re-releasing the earlier Shenmue games before the close of the Kickstarter. That, alongside the boost that happens anyway, would really convince me to be more loose with my wallet.

Ah. This is what they do on some temple here in japan. Don't worry, you find it. It could be on a special tree, pillar, fencing, etc. When you see it you will definitely know. Now to get the scroll it might be code based for ease.

I think the $80 tier is great. A lot of us will get it for the additional content, but they probably created this tier because it's a way for new fans to learn more about the story so far.

To be honest $20 extra for some in-game phone calls does seem a bit steep. That is close to expansion pack or bonus pack pricing. It would help if the phone card was physical with a code on it... it doesn't say it's not but I doubt it.

Maybe if it was a true bonus back with the phone calls + a bonus set of capsule toys + maybe a bonus song just as an example that would fill out the $20 a bit better.

For those upset about it, just think of as adding that extra $20 is helping to make those phone calls and helping overall. And if you don't want to then just watch them on youtube later.

Don't bother me none since im on $175 :)
