Steam Controller trailer, $50

Cannot wait to hear impressions from people here when it releases. I have been wanting to replace my 360 controller for my PC so this could be perfect.

Why replace? I've high hopes for the Steam Controller, but I have a feeling that the 360 pad will still be great for certain things. I'm definitely planning on keeping both of mine around.

Spotted this a blog post on Reddit with impressions and details of the Controller

http://devinandrewwhite.com/2015/07/07/everything-you-need-to-know-about-valves-steam-controller/

Seem to be quite a positive write up; the controller itself has shaped up very well, but right now without a community behind it to help with providing strong bindings, it can require a lot of fiddling to find good solutions for some games thanks to the large amount of customisation and no real guidance.

Also some pictures:

Wait you can do button combinations like RT+A?! Holy shit. I thought modifiers were limited to keys like alt, shift, ctrl. This is awesome! Cool writeup. I'm having a nerdgasm with the first screenshot above

ebgames.ca adjusted my Steam Link and Controller to the November date. I hope that's just a side effect of them adjusting the date on the store listing.

This is absolutely insane. It could actually be the greatest controller of all time.

Probably is. GAME UK have replaced the product pages entirely with ones that release in November. Clicking my order and then the controller says the page doesn't exist - since they removed that version of it when the stock ran out. I don't think it is particularly common to have early hardware orders before an actual release, so I don't think they are quite setup to do it properly on the web pages

I'm pretty sure the level of detail in those settings plus the level of obsessiveness that at least one person has about almost every single game out there will result in a great set of community profiles.

This is a place where Valve will be harnessing PC gamers' penchant for persnickety analysis and careful performance tweaking for the community's benefit, for sure. :P

Can I use Splatoon-style camera controls with the gyro (if any)?

Yes.

Edit: He's what Krejlooc said in another thread.

One thing everyone seems to miss? See the gyration logo in the middle of the screen? These things have imus inside. You know the motion control fine tune controls in stuff like splatoon or uncharted? You can make every game have those if you want.

AA batteries kinda kill my interest in this, even if there are rechargeable ones out there.

It did for me too, but then I saw it has a micro-USB port on it, so i'm assuming you'd slap some rechargables in it then plug in the controller to recharge them. Be pretty fucking stupid if you couldn't.

Yes! Getting the controller on October 13th!

Was thinking about buying the link but I figured I'd wait for reviews on it to see how things look. Has there been any first impressions or any articles on the link and how it looks/runs?

Eneloop rechargeable in my gaming controllers (360, Wavebird, and Wii Remotes) have been better than any controller with built in batteries (PS3, PS4, 360 recharge pack) outside of the Wii U Pro controller which I haven't tried myself yet.

Not sure if they're able to charge inside of the controller with USB plugged in (that would be sweet, but not sure if that's supported), but their charge lasts long enough, it's easy to pop in a fresh pair when they do die, and their overall longevity has been incredible (still using the first package of Eneloops I bought around 5 years ago.

Yes, was recommended Eneloop batteries earlier in this thread and they have been amazing. Far superior to previous AA batteries I've used. I'm definitely a AA convert now and will be happy to use them in this Controller, especially if the longevity is as long as everyone is reporting.

Can anyone explain what these "gyro controls" are?
Gyro in the controller can be used to finely/minutely adjust aim

So say the enemy is just a pixel or two below your reticule, you can tilt the controller towards the floor and the reticule will move. It's much quicker + more precise than traditional inputs and is great for precision.

I'm a sucker for new shiny things. So I'll be definitely buying this. Using an old 360 controller at the moment, so it's time for an upgrade.
On that note, can anyone say how much better an Xbox one controller is , over the 360 one.

Hot damn! I didn't even consider Gyro being mixed into this... shooters that used Gyro to assist aiming on console were always the best! (SO few ever did it...)

Really excited for this! Its not often a product comes around that really improves & changes control schemes up but I think this could do it. I love the fact that it operates as a native kb/m in old school games so will be able to play games like Mass Effect PC on the living room HTPC without rigging up a keyboard & mouse on the couch.

Some people will tell you it's actually worse than the 360 controller. Others will tell you its light years better. Personally, I think its a slight step back in build quality. The d-pad is obviously a lot better. Some dont like the new bumpers but I like them just fine. The Xbone sticks are arguably better or worse depending on preference. The new ones sit higher & are a little "looser". If you have smaller than average hands you may really like it as its smaller than the 360 controller. This is somewhat of a negative for me...i dont have catchers mitts but my hands feel more comfortable on the 360 shape & size. My fiance prefers the Xbone controller bc it fits her hands better. Overall I'd say its kind of a lateral move from the 360 controller.

I haven't used the new revised version of the Xbone controller with the 3.5mm jack yet, but supposedly the bumpers were modified slightly (some people complained about the location of the Xbone bumpers bc they got used to a "claw" grip on the 360 controller, which is harder to use on the Xbone controller due to how they're positioned). I have a new 1TB Xbone still sitting in the retail box...w/ one of the revised controllers included...so I might chime back in later to let u know after I use it.

Yup. Just imagine, every PC game is now controller compatible. It's a huge step forward, assuming that it works as advertized.

I'm very excited for this. Can't use keyboard and mouse for gaming due to pain in the hands, and there are a lot of PC games I can't play because they got no controller support.

Everything we've seen so far was only legacy mode, right? Where it is basically just a kb/m combo. But there's native mode as well, right? Where devs could reprogram the controller on the fly and stuff? Really interested in that as well if it's still that way. At least I remember them talking about that stuff.

Thanks for reply. Sounds like I'll be more suited to the 360 controller. Well, till the Steam controller arrives anyways.

Looks meh.

I can't believe they went with that horrible Nintendo Wii U style and flipped the position of the face buttons and the "right analog".

No thanks, I'll stick to using my DS4 for my PC controller needs.

Can't wait to see all the custom community button maps for games. Another reason to wait a bit before buying PC games: widely agreed on best button layouts for the Steam controller, cheaper price for the game, and a patch or two to improve performance.

It's a shame that you seem to hate the Wii u layout as it ticks all the right buttons for me in terms of design. It basically makes 2D and analog control both have the same amount of priority on the controller in terms of layout. It also gives symmetry to the analog sticks without making them have to be so close like the PlayStation while not having to increase the size of the controller drastically too.

The steam controller does the same thing to a certain extent. It would probably be more balanced if the analog stick were still four buttons, but this move is probably for the best in the long run.

Wait, this thing has gyro, too? Interesting. Using it for minute aiming changes might actually be useful in combination with an aiming method that's actually worth a damn. Looks like this'll be my favourite controller... When it actually becomes available to buy in Australia. Dammit, Valve.

Will this controller to automatically compatible with all Steam games no bullshit? Or will there still be exceptions and white/black lists of supported games?

I ask because I cannot use a keyboard to play games and using third party solutions to play 'some' games is a flaky and frustrating experience. I've only played four hours of The Witcher 2 on Steam because the 360 controller only works a couple of times. I have a number of Steam games purchased and ready to be played but only if I can plug and play.

I really hope this does that since it is first party.

Yes, it will work on every steam game. It can work as a mouse and keyboard.

Obviously it won't be able to automatically work on all games. It's a controller, not magic. Still, the idea is that community profiles will pick up the slack.

Well, I see a lot of aiming with the movement keys. It reminds me of how trackball players play.

Isn't that pretty standard even at higher levels of play? Like in CS I think you're supposed to keep your mouse on the level of where you anticipate you opponent to be and get him in sight by using your movement keys. I think I saw a video on that once.

Great news! Now i'm interested.

I'm not talking about perfect button mapping and the likes. I'm talking about Steam and the game recognizing there is a controller is even plugged in. I didn't know about custom profiles. That is interesting. I think that would save a lot of hassle mapping controls for popular games. If this flies, maybe devs themselves will start making custom profiles for their games. Who knows?
