Isn't San Fran weather kinda perfect all year round? Never too hot or too cold. Always breezy.

Uh not really, the temperature can really fluctuate through out the day. It can be really nice and warm, but an hour later it'll be windy and cold and you'll regret not bringing a sweater.

That's pretty typical for most coastal areas. I don't think occasionally needing a light jacket is what most people consider 'too cold.'

Yeah, glad I asked you guys and looked it up. I had this foreigner's deluded view that somehow all California weather in August ranges from hot to scalding hot.

I'll be sure to bring a jacket and a couple light sweaters then. Thanks!

It doesn't rain though, does it?

When someone or a business is trying to name something, how much does social media and the internet in general factor in? I mean stuff like availability of the website, twitter, tumblr etc because it seems like every other new startup has some jumble of letters as a name.
I'd say social media, and the internet in general, factor in greatly when an individual or business are naming their product or company. In todays times, a company or product name needs to be easy to remember, easy to spell, and kept short but sweet. See websites and services such as Tumblr, Twitter, IMVU, etc.

I am currently house rent searching at the moment and so Google Maps is an invaluable tool to check out walking distances to points of interest. Someone told me that Google Maps not only takes into account traffic for driving and public transport, but also for walking directions. Is this true for the walking directions part? It cannot possibly be and cannot find an answer with Google search results.

EDIT: More specific now.

I've checked with my friend and it does indeed do that in San Fransisco. But I'm based in London. Have Google rolled out updates with this functionality for London maps?

Domain name availability is a big one too. If you desperately want a .com, then you need to find a name that's actually available. That's why names like Tumblr exist. Not because they're easy to spell or pronounce - they don't, "Tumbler" makes more sense -, not because they're better from a strategic point of view, but because they're available.

Just saying, but there are more than 250 million domain names in the world right now.

What's G/A/F? It seems to pop up in thread titles every once in a while on the off-topic side.

It's a relic of when people would make a game of guessing what part of the world the story was from, Germany, Austria, Florida because it seemed like those places had the most bizarre stories. It kinda subsided when every story is from Florida.

Hoping this is a good place to ask this. The tattoo thread doesn't seem to get much love anymore.

I'm looking at getting my first tattoo within the next month or so. Looking to get half a sleeve of what is essentially a piece of Stanley Donwood's 20ft long London Views. You might know this better as the album art for Thom Yorke's The Eraser.
The full span of London Views.

Here's a section from another of his works, Lost Angeles

Now I have seen photos of someone with a very similar tattoo to what I am looking to get. Almost identical.
The difference, though, is that while their tattoo shares the waves and clouds of the artwork, the buildings and people caught in the flood seem to be original work, I'm guessing by the tattoo artist. I can't find them anywhere in London Views or Lost Angeles.
I'm still looking for the artist who I'll contact about the tattoo, but when I do, I'm not sure how to approach it. This is my first tattoo, and I'm not sure about how artists feel about replicating work. I imagine it would be rude to simply ask him to copy the tattoo I linked to, so I don't plan on that.

But what should I tell him/her? That I'd like to keep the waves and clouds how they are (though modifying them to fit around my arm will probably be necessary), but that they are welcome to create their own buildings / structures / people in boats? OR is even asking them to replicate the clouds and waves of the original artwork too much? I'm just worried about coming off as rude or inconsiderate. I'm sure most artists don't get into the profession to copy other people's work, and would rather create their own. But I'm also worried about asking them to create their own buildings for the work if they can't replicate the style well enough.

Was out and about today and got sweat in the inside of my polarized Oakleys and some mud on the outside? What's the best way to clean them? Is microfiber ok? Or does it need soap and water?

There was a movie I saw when I was younger in which a small creature would come out of a hole in a bedroom wall and cause harm to the family living in the house. If I remember correctly, in the end the family cat saved them? And at some point the thing was on a record player... running... It's from the 80's, I think. I used to think it was Cat's Eye, but I watched that recently and realized 1. I'd never seen Cat's Eye. and 2. It wasn't the movie I was looking for.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I have a gain control button on my USB mic and I use Audacity, but apparently the Audacity input control is acting on its own and automatically adjusts no matter what I do. I could have the gain turned all the way down on my mic and Audacity will still record.

Does anyone know how to control gain exclusively via your hardware interface and not through Audacity?

This has been driving me crazy lately. I've been a member of GAF for a long time but I can't remember if this was always the case.

Has Gaming side always been filled with completely idiotic hypotheticals or is this a recent trend? I honestly can't remember but man some of them are dumb and they're happening all the time.

Is there a way to *save* a website for offline access? A local company is going out of business and I would like to reference their website, but I fear it will be taken down soon.

Eventually you can try something like archive.is or wayback.archive.org or just save the website as an image via some browser extension.

Does anyone know if there's a way to change our usernames? I mean, I like my current name but I don't want people linking me to my unhealthy obsession fascination for Reggie.

Is there a way to schedule an Amazon delivery for a specific date in the future? I want to have something be delivered about a month from now, and would like to order it now so I don't forget.

Computer question?: I can't seem to get on the Giantbomb.com site anymore. It just displays a white page with the word "Forbidden" in the top left corner. I can still get on the site through my phone, so I know it's not down. How can I fix this?

Even on properly dodgy websites, you simple read what it says and click the link to ignore the message.

Post a screen grab...

Can anybody from London tell me what Mile End is like and what are some cool things to do there?

Edit: More stupid questions. Sorry gaf
How do I multi-quote on mobile?
Is there an easier way to see who quoted me than going back to the thread?
How do I get a bigger picture of someone's avatar to avatar quote them?

Thanks.

Mile End typifies the East End Of London. It's kinda rough, and I say this as a local, not an inhabitant.
The Muslim Bengali community is quite sizable, so you'll see lots of Asian shops/restaurants.
Queen Mary is right on Mile End. So lots of students in bars and clubs.
Victoria Park is cool. Lovely for a picnic.
Whitechapel is nearby - bell foundry, Whitechapel Art Gallery, Jack the ripper tours. Brick lane/ shoreditch
Tower Bridge and The tower of London are ten minutes drive depending on the traffic.
Rest of the city is close enough twenty minutes on the tube to get to central/west end. Big Ben/parliament/Oxford Street/Piccadilly circus etc..
Stratford, is on the other side of Bow (go east). For Olympic park etc.. Practically next door, if only the traffic there lately is insufferable.
Don't know anybody who would recommend the O2 arena (millennium dome), but that's not far on the tube either, should you wish to go.

If I disable the vpn, I can get on fine. But I usually need it on (as I'm in China for the next month).

I checked out the solution you posted earlier, and it looks like I'm clear on that end.

Thank you. This is very helpful

Hmm... I was going to suggest clear out your cache. So you may as well do that, even if logically, it shouldn't work.

I think the problem you have now is that it might be Giantbomb who is blocking your private i.p address. Email them, and see where they stand.
If it's your software, see if there is an option to block/unblock websites.

Hey question! I'm trying to watch EVO but my laptop has no sound and it's not as much fun without the sound :( My phone has sound but I can't connect to the wi-fi through my phone and I can't use up all my data watching EVO.

Is there any way to access the internet on my phone through my laptop (kind of like reverse tethering)?

There was a website I used a few years ago that was like a site for writers to store information about characters in their stories. Like you could make lists of characters and input data about them (like a bio, age, gender, a lot of different stuff), but I've been unable to recall what the site was.

Does this site sound familiar to anyone here?

Does the Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 14 really not have any pen/digitizer support? After looking online and researching a buy I was able to find nothing.
