2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

I don't know if this is the exact same but: http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/msi-gs60-ghost-pro-mini-review-and-upgrade-log.200251/

I'm eyeing the ghost pretty hard despite only really finding any with the 970m. Sort of a sucker for pretty looking.

older config but i believe it should be the same, thanks! dude even has the same-ish samsung laptop)

oh boy, looks like quite a feat and yes, MSI really is hitting it out of the park with this new laptops. that's why i chose them over the gigabyte even if they were more bang for your buck kind of deal.

EDIT: damn, giving it a more detailed look i dont find it in myself to do it.

Finally took the plunge with the NP8652. There was this super tempting 2-week old MSI Ghost with the 970m on Craigslist for $1300 because of 15% restock fee though. I'm a sucker for how that one looks overall.

Hello, laptop GAF.

Country - USA
Max budget - $2,000 (would go slightly over for the right build)
Max size - Irrelevant (That's what she said)
Planned usage - Want to be able to run FFXIV on max settings but still be somewhat forward thinking. Also maybe something as intense as like, Witcher 3.
Misc: I don't want to have to worry about overclocking / keeping it in an ice chest

I have to admit I'm fairly incompetent when it comes to hardware; I've been out of the game too long. I've been looking into the Asus ROG series, which reading a few pages back, sounds like it's a fairly good fit for me, except for subpar speakers? Open to other brands that present a better value of course.

Lots of options here: http://www.asus.com/us/site/g-series/G751/
And again, I'm not sure which one presents the best bang for the buck.

...And are they giving out Arkham Knight.... on PC.... ?

So far I'm sweating over details between a PC Specialist 15.6" Defiance or a 15.6" Vortex IV.

Vortex IV:
+ Better CPU for the money i7-4810MQ
+ CPU and GPU are not soldered in
+ Firewire port (could be handy in future)
+ Smaller width and length
- Heavier
? Harddrive type 1 X 9.5mm

Defiance:
+ Thinner
+ Lighter
+ the bigger 17.5 model is quite a bit cheaper
- CPU slightly not as good i7-4720HQ

Also what is a good set up for harddrives? So far I have them set with a 500GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD and a 1TB WD SLIM BLUE WD10SPCX. Is it worth going for a smaller HDD and/or a bigger SSD or just a SSD?

First time building a laptop like this so want to get it right. Currently they are both quoted at around £1350 but the 17" Defiance is about £1200 and the 17" Vortex IV costs too much with the same specs.

Country: Sweden
Max Budget: 2000 euro
Max size: 17"
Planned usage: Only some gaming as I game mostly on consoles; would be mostly used for programming and designing stuff in photoshop etc.

Currently own a Clevo W230SS ( 860M, i7 4710MQ, 8 GB RAM ) which I bought in Tokyo, but plastic parts are coming off and the fan noise is killing me, so I'm looking for something new.

Have been looking at various models, from gaming laptops to ultrabooks but just can't make up my mind about what would be the best choice within my budget.
Looking at build quality only, I've been impressed with the XPS 13 and MacBook Pro but I'm not an OSX fan so I would need to dual boot.

Anyone have any experiences dual-booting windows on a MacBook?

Edit:

Should mention that I'm looking for something portable with enough battery life to last during lessons as I'm a student.

My mother needs a new laptop.

Country: Canada
Max budget: 700$CAN (the less expensive the better)
Max size: 17inches
Planned usage: accounting and browsing the web

My mother does not play video games or use anything requiring powerful hardware. She only cares about having a laptop that can do what she needs (doing her accounting and browsing the web), lasts a long time and costs as low as possible. It would also be nice if the laptop didn't produce a lot of noise.

I was thinking about getting her a ThinkPad E450 as Lenovo has had a solid reputation over the years, but the reviews don't seem all that hot for it (the screen in particular is supposed to be subpar). Maybe Lenovo laptops aren't what they used to be ? Or maybe the reviewers simply have higher standards than my mother ?

Please help, Gaf. Thank you.

I'd go with this. Only thing in the budget that has a decent 1080p screen. All 768p screens are horrible.

OK, I'm looking at a Macbook for University next year (well, in a few months if all goes to plan) and I was planning on the 15' but my brother says this is a bad idea as it is a little too big and an external monitor for when a bigger screen is needed would be better.

I'm looking and it seems the 13' pro is a better idea than the pro due to the negligible size difference and much bigger spec difference?

edit: Other question is 8GB vs 16GB, is 16 really worth it?

If you don't have an answer to what you'd do with 16GB, then no, it's not worth it.

All "ultrabook" style machines are hard to upgrade.

I'd go with one of these, or go with this SKU, if you want built in G-Sync.

GT72 = best gaming laptop out

Anyone got any opinions on alienware?

Not that much more expensive than the NP8651 and has more ram, 4k screen, an SSD built in, price is in Canadian by the way

Why go 4K? If you don't specifically have a use for it, it will be more of an annoyance than a useful feature.

Slimmer new-gen machine with no optical drive vs older model with more utilitarian features. I can't decide that one for you.

500GB SSD + 1TB HDD is a good combo. Only go SSD w/o HDD, in a gaming laptop, when you're talking a 750GB+ capacity SSD. Games are only getting bigger.

I asked a week or so ago but any idea when Clevo will begin using the latest generation of i7 processors?

No idea.

But why go 965M SLI, over a single 980M? It doesn't make much sense.

Since gaming doesn't matter much, just go XPS imo.

Finally decided on a laptop and ordered it yesterday. Extended my original budget a bit to get a 17.3" Octane with a i7-4790 and GTX 980M, 750GB HDD and 250GB SSD, and 8GB of RAM for now. Thanks for the help everyone! :)

Country: UK
Max Budget: ~£1.5k
Max size: 17"
Planned usage: Want to use it as my primary gaming platform (Should run the latest games on high-ultra at least 30fps/1080p).

I'm currently heavily leaning towards this with 8GB RAM(is 16 worth it?), 980m and 240gb SSD added in.

edit: looks like the 980m is out of stock for now. Is there a big enough difference between a 6gb 970m and an 8gb 980m?

Going through Xotic PC is somewhat of a pain right now since I recently moved. Though I've updated my address, I don't know how long it takes the banks and what not to get the information through or I changed the wrong sections pertaining to address. =/

I know this is gaming laptop gaf, but I was redirected here to ask for a cheap laptop that I can throw word on/use for college (planning on building a gaming pc, so mainly for common use, not anything notable)
Like, a few hundred? Probably 8 gigs of ram and an okay sized hard drive

orr....thats not happening >_>

Just lookin' at these two laptops right now. Anyone know anything much about them or if the brands are bad/good?

Lenovo Y50

Acer Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition

I could get a cheaper laptop than those.. but sub $900 is definitely needed. Or around $900. I posted on the previous page, but my budget has slightly changed, lol.

Lenovo is quality. Consistent quality. I would ALWAYS go for Lenovo given the chance. I don't see how this is a debate :)

And I've had nothing but bad experience with Acers. Even the Acer gaming laptops. I'd advise everyone to steer clear of Acer unless they absolutely undercut the nearest competion by >15% percent. Not worth it otherwise.

Edit - that being said the Acer linked is quite a bit of kit. 960M vs 860M

860M = 960M

I'm very happy with my Acer V Nitro, the trackpad is shit but otherwise a great laptop.

The Y50 you linked is a 2014 model, which are all known to have screens with awful viewing angles.
Here's a 2015 model with an IPS screen and a slightly better CPU, if you're ok with losing the touchscreen and downgrading to a 500GB SSHD.
Btw both laptops have "crap" trackpads, but trackpads never bothered me for some reason.

Oh, thanks for the info on the brands. I really don't have much experience with either of those brands since I haven't had many laptops (and my desktops have been mostly builty by me).

Had no idea the 860M and 960M were pretty much equal. Just looked at a benchmark and yup, they are. That makes choosing a bit easier, but you did say you have liked your Acer V Nitro. What makes the trackpad so bad? I'd probably use a mouse most of the time anyways though.

Ooooh, thanks a lot for this! I didn't know that was the 2014 model, lol. I should have paid more attention. Hard drive space won't be that big of a deal to me. :)

Hi there.

My 6 years old Dell laptop is on its way out and I'm debating whether I should go for a desktop computer or a laptop. Specs-wise, I expect to be disappointed by laptops considering the fact that I can get a desktop computer for much cheaper but, the thing is, I love the form factor of a laptop.

OP, maybe you can restore my faith in laptops. I know what I want to do with my computer, but my knowledge is very limited when it comes to the actual hardware.

Here's what I want to do with my computer:
-Stream/watch movies in 1080p
-Retro (and not-so-retro) gaming: PS2 gaming (at great speed) is a must for me. If I could play Wii games, it would be great too. I don't need to play other "regular PC" games on the ultra high graphics setting, but my emulators need to run as close to the real thing as possible.
-Record music. Honestly, I'm not sure if the majority of the work is done by an external device (like a POD) or by an internal soundcard.

Here's the catch, though:
-I'd appreciate a great battery life. My current laptop lasted 9 hours on a charge when I got it. Now, I can get around 5-6 hours, I think. 5 hours would be great if ever I decided to go back to university in the next few years. Chasing a power outlet after 1 hour of use is a big no-no to me.
-I don't want to pay over 1000$ (CAN).
(A 15" screen is good enough.)

I'm aware I might be asking for the impossible, but it's never a bad thing to ask.

Also, I'm not actively searching for a new computer. Like, I don't need it for next week. Technically, the more I wait, the better the specs will be. I can tolerate my current laptop, but it's gotten to a point where I'm getting sick of it hanging up, lagging, making loud fan noises when playing a video on Youtube (in 360p).

Thanks for your time.

980M is like 25% faster, definitely worth it if you can afford it.

You don't game on a laptop, when the desktop option is available.

About your current machine, it sounds like you needs to clean the dust out of the fans.

I'd just ask them to list it on Amazon for you. I had them do that once when I had to buy a screen.

Good point thanks. I had completely forgot about that option even as I was thinking of asking "Since this is turning out to be the way it is, what can I settle for on Amazon with a 970m?"

Since there's not a whole lot before going into 17" territory.

Had no idea the 860M and 960M were pretty much equal. Just looked at a benchmark and yup, they are. That makes choosing a bit easier, but you did say you have liked your Acer V Nitro. What makes the trackpad so bad? I'd probably use a mouse most of the time anyways though.

It's a clickpad where roughly 85% of the area is designated as the left button and the near right corner is designated as the right button, but sometimes it registers the click elsewhere as a right click and sometimes it registers clicking in that corner as a left click and sometimes clicking doesn't seem to do anything. Those things happen only occasionally but when they do they can be very infuriating.

I vastly prefer working over the best of trackpads anyway, so not a big loss for me, but for primarily trackpad-oriented users I wouldn't recommend it at all.

But otherwise a fantastic laptop.

Hi LaptopGAF.

Country - UK
Max budget - £1,000
Max size - 15 inch, but would prefer 13 inch
Planned usage - School use, something light and portable to carry around school but also can be used to play some non-graphically intensive games
Misc: I'm trying to help my brother get a laptop for his school. He seemed to like the MSI Ghost

Country: US
Budget: likely $700 but perhaps up to $1100 if I can justify it.
Size: 15 inches and in general lighter will be better
Usage: the Total War, DayZ, Civ, and Sim Cities of the world plus random other rts, fps and indy games from steam. Video streaming (to a TV) and general work stuff will also happen but I'm sure almost any computer will suffice. Resolution and such don't particularly matter, but I do hope I'll be using the laptop for the next four years at least. I had not planned on replacing my laptop I'd gotten in 2012 but someone breaking into my apartment forced my hand. And forced my hand with the budget, as I haven't been saving up for a computer and have to go by the insurance company's determination plus what I'm willing to pay beyond that while replacing other things too. So I guess a quad core to plan for the future might be a must, budget considering. Nothing too loud fan-wise for my wife's consideration since we share the same living room space when on our computers. Luckily my headset is still here so I don't have to replace that.

As an aside, are there any recommendations on wireless mice that will work decently on couches? That's primarily where my computer will be when I'm on it and when we watch Netflix and prime and the like. And my mouse got taken as well.

Thank youu

Is...that today only, orr

edit: and bought!
Thanks for keeping me $150 ahead of budget, instead of having to go with some cheap speakers or less than optimal headphones, I was able to get some M50X's with the spare money for my new PC
Thank you so much <3

Oh that's ahead of budget? Phew, when you said a "few" hundred, I was thinking that even over $300 might be too much.

The M50X is pretty good too, glad you could fit it in there.

GS60 is good, but go with this one. It has a GTX 965M, good cards.

Decide on a solid budget then come back. $700 but maybe $1100 makes it hard to recommend anything.

Yeah I really need to decide if I can put in the extra money up and above what the insurance company will reimburse right now. I shall come back when I've stopped kicking it around in my head. Thanks for the response.

1 - Knowing how much the insurance company kicks back will really help. Can you wait that long?

2 - Wanting it to last 4 years says you need a budget higher than $700, even for light gaming. ~$1k is pretty much the starting price for GTX 960M (desktop GTX 750 Ti performance, literally the same card) equipped laptops.

my sager has this weird quirk where once in a while, where the built-in subwoofer would stop producing bass after unplugging my headphones.

it can be fixed by reinstalling the realtek driver. its quite annoying.

I'd really love to get an MSI, but I don't think they offer one with dual regular hard drives and at least a GeForce 970.

EDIT: The Aorus one looks really good. I like the price, too.

I know people say 16gb is not worth it, but for someone that does not buy upgrades regularly, would 16gb be a worthwhile investment? I'd like to future proof it for at least a few years.

Also, is anyone here a dell sales rep by any chance?

I have a question!

If I buy a machine without a m.2 SSD drive, then later on decide that I want to install one as an OS drive, how hard would it be to migrate the OS files to the new drive and keep everything else on the old drive?

I'm making this thread for my brother as he is in the market for a new laptop.

A couple of points:

- We're buying in the US
- $500 to $600 budget
- Wants to use the laptop for light gaming
- Wants an Intel CPU
- CPU can either be dual or quad core, doesn't matter
- Middle-tier Nvidia or AMD GPU should suffice
- Doesn't need a HDD (going to use current one)
- Doesn't need ram (going to use current 2x4 1600 Mhz DDR3 sticks)
- 1080p screen preferred but 1366x768 can be suggested if it lowers the price
- laptop weigh doesn't matter
- 15.6 inch screen preferred
- number pad on the keyboard is a must
- can run games like Revengeance, NBA 2K15, and Wolfenstein TOB with normal settings

It's a clickpad where roughly 85% of the area is designated as the left button and the near right corner is designated as the right button, but sometimes it registers the click elsewhere as a right click and sometimes it registers clicking in that corner as a left click and sometimes clicking doesn't seem to do anything. Yeah this is my only issue with this laptop. That and the WiFi doesn't work well far from the receiver but not a huge deal. Still a high quality laptop with a nice screen and power

I did good?

No game uses 8GB today, so what will use 16GB in a few years?

I have a question!

If I buy a machine without a m.2 SSD drive, then later on decide that I want to install one as an OS drive, how hard would it be to migrate the OS files to the new drive and keep everything else on the old drive?

Well, you can't strip the OS from a drive while leaving everything else on it. Installing the OS on the m.2 then using the old drive for storage is easy though.

I did good?

It's a good laptop, but I certainly wouldn't have bought it from such an unknown reseller.

Hey all, what do you guys think of the ASUS K501LX-NB52?

Link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834232576

-It's $750
-Nvidia GTX 950M
-Broadwell i5-5200U
-8GB RAM DDR3
-128GB SSD
-1TB 5200 RPM

I'm mostly a console gamer, but I'd like to get into some PC gaming (but nothing too graphically intensive that I can play on my PS4). I mostly play LoL and Football Manager on my current laptop.

There's another version of this laptop with an i7-5500U, but reading online tells me there isn't much of a performance difference between that processor and the i5.

Well somebody has to give them a chance. First impressions of laptop so far are really good

I've seen too many people get left out to dry when an upstart Clevo reseller goes belly up. There are so many reputable dealers out there, why take the chance?

To those who take their gaming laptop out and about, has finding a power socket ever been a big problem?

Nope, cities are overflowing with sockets these days.

Hm okay, I may go for 8gb now and perhaps see about upgrading in the future.

My friend is helping me with a new laptop, and I'm thinking of going for the Alienware 13.

I know the processor is fairly underpowered, it being an i7 5550u

I'm looking for something slim and portable that won't overheat easily, but can still play the newest games even if at low/med settings only.

Battery life is also important, and I know gaming laptops with quadcores don't do above four hours very well. I'm looking for maybe six at min, which is why I'm considering 5550u, less power consumption.

Or should I just wait for Skylake? Thanks for any help, a bit lost here...

What about the MSI GS60?

Skylake may be as close as August, so you may want to just wait a couple weeks.

Do we have an idea when the Alienware lineup is getting a refresh? Soon?

I'm just examining my options now before I buy, I'm in no rush to buy now.
