I just found out about this while sitting in a hotel room across the country. I myself am going in for some medical treatment this week. This is an absolute shock to read. I'm at a loss for words. This makes me feel so sick and sad.

Also Iwata wrote the prototype for Smash Brothers, and when he became president his first act was to assign himself to the Melee team so the game could come out during the Gamecube's launch window.

Ya if I were weeks away from possible or probably death I'd be a depressed crybaby, this guy was dealing with us whining that we didn't like how the Samuses were playing sports.
Thread is being actively moderated at all times to address these issues as they come up, but while we understand that everyone is emotional and heated right now, please don't jump on potentially callous responses, tweets, images, etc. Hundreds of people quoting something negative to call it out just gives it a louder voice and derails us from paying our respects to Iwata's memory. Been a huge Nintendo fan since I was four years old, when my parents brought home a Super Nintendo. It was like 1996-1997, so I was a bit late, but I played so much with those games. Days and nights of pure joy. And then I found the same joy with every other Nintendo systems.
It's like losing someone of your family. Gaming, when you are a kid and especially in difficult times, lend you that hand that nobody gives you and hit that spot when noone understands you. Nintendo games, in particular, have always been that "third parent" for a lot of us. They build your fantasy, they help you thinking things nobody thought before and they assure you that, okay, you're growing up and things are getting strange and hard, but there's always a way to go on, maybe you need a fire flower, or maybe you didn't notice that crack on the wall.
This time, well, it's a game over.
Losing someone that helped you building your own dreams is so freaking painful.
And you know what? I finished EarthBound for my first time ever right some minutes before I knew about Iwata's death. I turned my Wii U off and I was going to Gaf, just for posting my cheerful impressions of the game.
So freaking painful.
RIP, Legend.

And the players have to enjoy playing it, or else it's not worth playing. No amount of marketing or hype can obliterate those very basic human facets. I've never been a big fan of the Wii U, and many times have considered selling it or just giving it away to someone who would actually use it more often. But yesterday, I reconnected with a brother of mine that I hadn't been on good terms with in quite some time. We settled every problem we had, squashed any beef that was lingering. We didn't do it over a beer, a joint, or a movie. We did it over a few hours of Mario Kart 8, and Smash Bros. For that, I'll always be thankful for Iwata and the Wii U.
I've got a game of Mario Party scheduled for next week with the aforementioned brother, so I'm sure we'll hate eachother again afterwards.
Regardless, thank you for everything. You helped and touched my life more than you'll ever know, and yet, we'll never meet.

You know, I've been meaning to pick up a New 3DS so I think I'll do that. There's stuff I've been missing. This just really gets me in a Nintendo mood. I mean I usually am, but still. As others are saying a great way to honor him is to play games and have fun. Need to get something new and play in his honor.
I'm bummed but happy with what he's given me over the years and I'll continue to love and support Nintendo.

The feels
His character is shown just in the simple fact we feel like we know what kind of person he was, because he bothered at all to speak directly to gamers, and did so frequently and earnestly. Presidents can come out at E3 or GDC and talk big about the philosophy they use to run their company, but he was like an actual activist for keeping the humanity in videogames, even when it wasn't appreciated, even when it was controversial.
There is so much he decided that reflected that, and so many little projects and presentations and communications he carried out that he didn't need to at all. They seemed to be just to recognize the people who make games, the people who play games, and what games can be if we give due respect to why we all got into them in the first place. There are surely people with that mind in the industry, but I can't think of many CEOs who display it so well, and I can't think of anyone who publicly drove at it like a persistent PSA like he did.
