Fighting Games Weekly | Jul 6-12 | Freuds Among Us

The mourning of Iwata reminds me of that plot trope where the last time two characters meet before one of them dies, they had a big fight or left on bad terms, for an extra bit of tragedy.

I am going to be doing an EVO FGW prediction competition.

Basically I will list a bunch of questions and you guys give out your predictions based on those questions. Whoever gets the most right will receive some monetary award from me personally.

I will post the competition in the next FGW as soon as it comes up.

I honestly don't know how to react to the Iwata news. I'm mainly shocked since it came out of fucking nowhere.

Yeah, I thought he actually recovered from what he suffered with. Boom, it came out of no where that he died. It really impacted me big time. It's really sad. :(

lol bish is onto our MvC4 hero

yes

Wait, I don't see how he implied that we would get MVC4. I think he implied the game would be smaller than what we expected, like Mighty Marvel or something like that.

Hmm, might we see UNIEL next year as an official game? Sounds like something that's definitely had a ton of momentum, and it's still putting up numbers it seems.

This is FGW, make it about Evo or I'll change it from whatever it gets named. It's sad that Iwata has passed away but it''s not fighting game related.

  • Without Iwata there would be no Super Smash Bros 64 and by extension no Super Smash Bros series
  • Super Smash Brothers is a fighting game we discuss in this topic
  • Ergo Iwata is relevant

In retrospect, it shouldn't have been surprising; the signs were there. I think everyone didn't really want to consider the possibility after the first recovery, but cancer is like that.

If the update reaches the US or consoles in a timely manner, possibly. That'll be the question though, does the dev/publisher want to bring it to consoles and possibly eat up their arcade revenue in Japan. Will it maintain the momentum for it is another thing. UNIEL has more akin to SFxT than it does other anime games when it comes to the demographics, IMO. It'll be interesting if they can keep it going or eventually dwindle.

Can anyone comment on MVC4? Is everyone overreacting for that post or did I missed something?

You got a good point. I lost my family members to the cancer but I don't know why I didn't think of it being applied to Iwata.

Second, I thought it was good for what they usually do. I have other games to play, I can patiently wait for their triple A titles and not hold them at gunpoint about it.
I contextualized it as a supplement to the Smash Direct we got on Sunday, which was incredible. Imagine the bomb surprise Ryu and Roy DLC would have been if the game's code wasn't explored. It wouldn't have topped Sony's showing, but folks would have put Nintendo above MS without question. It wasn't a great E3, but it wasn't Nintendoland Fireworks, either. The rage that presentation received is hard for me to understand.

I don't know. For anime games, it'll always be the second game that isn't Xrd.

Persona is only in this year because of Atlus. UNIEL without help...I don't know.

I don't see it happening, honestly. French Bread is too poor to front the marketing money needed to sponsor a big event, and I seriously doubt ArcSys is going to give it a big push as they're too busy trying to not cannibalize their own games. That and there's no practical way to get an update out. They could what, push an update out on console and make Phonon DLC? There's no way this is worth it, they would probably sell about 1,000-2,000 units of the DLC, if that. They could put out a whole new disc release, but it would sell like crap. They could do something bizarre like roll out a release on a new platform for it, like on the PS4, Vita and PC. That's probably the one thing that makes sense, but French Bread and ArcSys would have to buy into it, and I don't see that being likely.
