Transformers: Devastation (Platinum Games) - SDCC trailer

just goes to show that platinum, just like any other dev, has thier flaws.

and yes they should face that kind of criticism

Saying a game visual looks dated without any argument to back up why it'll become a better game with nicer visual isn't criticism. It is a lazy remark that disguised as criticism.

Already some great gifs posted, and probably of better segments. But here's two more, because fuck it, game looks awesome. Tried to make them smooth, which is why they're pretty big for the length.

Which one? I see like 8 of them on Comixology though I am unsure which one is actually ongoing.

Read More than Meets the Eye. From the beginning.

If you want to read the other books you can, but that's far and away the best TF book out there. It's so good I recommend it to comics-but-not-transformers fans.

Their transformed state is so jarring. I mean they already took liberties in scale before but even more so in this game.

More than Meets the Eye, got it, was confused as there is that one and another one called Robots in Disguise from IDW that has been going on for a while as well.

Still only two series running there right?

Just read ANY TF comic written by James Roberts...well not really, here's the suggested reading order.
Only thing you need to know before reading Wreckers is that the Autbots and Decepticons fought on Earth, Autobots made a few human friends, one of them hitch hikes on Magnus' ship and has been with him for a few years/months. Finally the main events of the book take place after Megatron is presumed KIA.

Also, Cyclonus in this series isn't a Decepticon; he's an ancient Cybertronian warrior who left Cybertron eons ago, but his crew became corrupted and evil. He eventually helps the Autbots defeat them and has been on Cybertron by MTMTE.

1- Last Stand of the Wreckers (Optional: Track down TF Spotlight Kup as it explains Guzzle's motives for joining the team)
2- TF: Chaos Theory this contains 2 issues that James wrote which are fantastic and show that Optimus Prime was a badass even before he became a Prime, don't worry about the Rodimus story too much :P
3- More than Meets the eye Vol. 1-3
4- Transformers Dark Prelude (contains stories that take place during Vol. 1-3)
5- More than meets the eyes Vol. 4-6
6- Dark Cybertron
7- The rest of MTMTE

Is there a realistic chance for this to be good? I love the aesthetic, but am doubting this will be anything more than middling.

Platinum has put out eight games with only one of them being middling - and this looks way better than either Madworld (that one) or Legend of Korra (the next-worst thing they made). Just going by the recent footage I can't imagine this being less than "very good".

If you're not a fan of the genre though, that's another matter.

Madworld is leagues above Legend of Korra and I don't even think Korra is as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

MadWorld was a perfectly middling 6/10 game. Kind of thing you rent from Blockbuster, play through in five mildly diverting hours, then return it late cuz you forgot all about it

Anarchy Reigns, and a lot of people aren't too fond of Legend of Korra.
Those games aren't super polished, but I'd still call them solid. Anarchy Reigns is a little underrated. Good gameplay, a well varied roster, and a great soundtrack. Based on what I've seen, even Korra is passable thanks to the voice acting and combat system.

Platinum hasn't actually made a bad game, ever.

Anarchy Reigns is great in a different way than the others. Or rather, it was great for a couple of weeks give or take. Why it had no local MP whatsoever, I'll never know.

Anarchy Reigns is fantastic. I'd say Madworld is safely their worst game, and only because it's very arcadey. It's still very much worth playing.

Yeah, I always laugh when people talk about scale in reference to Transformers. Megatron's gun transformation represents everything I loved about Transformers as a kid. It makes me smile every time I see it.

That or Soundwave or Shockwave transforming into varying sizes, depending on situation. Always funny to me even if it was plainly ridiculous within the established reality of the show. It's a fucking kids show meant to support a toy line.

Yup. "Just repeat to yourself 'It's just a show, I should really just relax.'"

Something becoming better when it looks nicer is kinda common sense, though?

Suppose there's this hypothetical ugly-looking game. It has great story, tight gameplay, charming characters, and I love it very much. It still looks ugly, though. Can't I utter my wish for it to look better without having "who cares, you shallow gamer" as a response?

Not every criticism must directly tie to the element you personally deem important.

Anarchy Reigns, and a lot of people aren't too fond of Legend of Korra.

Anarchy Reigns was amazing, flawed netcode I think but online was an absolute blast when the game was new and had a decent player-base. The soundtrack is also dope as hell.

Korra was enjoyable for what it was I guess. But there wasn't much to it.

Madworld is leagues above Legend of Korra and I don't even think Korra is as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

Madworld is nowhere near as good as Korra. Its enemies and bosses are pretty much all bland and unengaging and your character's moveset isn't interesting at all. Korra is a total imbalanced mess but it still holds itself together much better than Madworld. (I'd say Korra is much better as a single-player game than Anarchy Reigns, too. AR is ultimately better because of its multiplayer though.)

Madworld does at least have fantastic aesthetics; it's better-realized in that regard than Korra. But that's the only thing it has over that game.

Just read ANY TF comic written by James Roberts...well not really, here's the suggested reading order-
1- Last Stand of the Wreckers
1b- OPTIONAL: TF: Chaos Theory this contains 2 issues that James wrote which are fantastic and show that Optimus Prime was a badass even before he became a Prime, don't worry about the Rodimus story too much :P
2- More than Meets the eye Vol. 1-4
3- Transformers Dark Prelude (contains stories that take place during Vol. 1-4)
4- More than meets the eyes Vol. 5-6
5- Dark Cybertron
6- The rest of MTMTE

Thanks for this list, I think I'll wait until Comixology start their subscription model to dive into these.

Neat, I actually have Last Stand of the Wreckers so probably time to re-read it. Thanks for the list.

Pretty excited for this game. Please tell me they are going to include some of the orginal cartoon score and logo transitions. Has there been any mention?

The people doubting this are weird to me. Platinum has had one major misstep in Korra amongst their stellar track record. The only people I can see not being interested in this are those who just aren't into fast-paced character action (but then why would they be in a thread about a P* game anyway?).
I don't care much about Transformers and this game still looks like the bee's knees to me.

That's the thing though, Transformers is my favorite IP of all time. I just ordered a Japanese Devastator that's probably going to cost me the same as one month's worth of rent. P* making a TF game is like a ridiculous dream come true for me, so I just need to keep my expectations in check or disappointment will be a foregone conclusion.

It's also looking quite a lot like Korra, especiallyy in its low budget and relatively limited combat compared to their other masterpieces. Korra wasn't a "misstep", it was the obvious result of having a shoestring budget: the thing is that it had solid basics (it's still P*), and with a little more money it could have been an amazing game. The same seems to be happening here: all five characters seem very similar to play and reuse many moves, up to and including Prime and Grimlock's transformation stomp. They are much more similar than different weapons in Bayonetta or TW101; hell, they're more similar than elements in Korra! Watching Grimlock's gameplay really did nothing to quell my fears, quite the opposite. This lines up with Activision's attitude towards Transformers post FoC, with Rise of the Dark Spark being made on a short budget and showing it too.

It is what it is, though, and no fault of P*. We'll all probably buy it all the same and I expect it to be fun, just not the earth-shattering perfect game we would get with a bit more money.
