Hollywood is a very "what have you done for us lately?" industry and since then its been very very bad

After Earth was his most recent huge failure and it's also his lowest point

Katana looks so cosplay / anime convention level. Does she really have the Japanese flag as her mask?

looks worse than the Arrow costume for sure (that one still has the goofy mask, but it's a better fitting costume)

finally watched the good quality trailer last night

A very small percentage is using that as the reason to dislike him. I think a lot of the hesitation is because of him being cast at all, regardless of what character he's playing

I like it a lot more when trailers just use the original version of songs.. or at least one not too "movie trailer"

Well in my mind i like it when you take a known quantity and flip it to have a whole new meaning/style as it changes your preconceived thoughts and adapts it to fit the narrative of their story.

I personally thought it was great, really helped build up the mood throughout the trailer and dips at the end with the reveal of the Joker, great stuff.

I never went for the 'trying to hard' argument for this sort of stuff, just doesnt come into it for me as there is room for many interpretations of art/music etc.

Will Smith was mostly brilliant from the late '90s through the mid '00s. He's not necessarily the best actor, but he's got so much charm and charisma.

Both those movies tripled their budget. No idea about After Earth, but it looked terrible. Although he still had it in MIB3, that was a fun movie.

Eh, the acting in Bad Boys is straight up terrible. ID and Enemy of the State are pretty questionable as well. Yeah, he was good in some movies like Ali, but most of the time he's just Will Smith playing Will Smith, or phoning it in pretty hard.

Especially funny considering the genre Suicide Squad belongs too. Are people really going to pretend being assholish action anti-hero is a role that requires some incredible acting ability? Vast majority of leads in modern superhero movies sleepwalk through their flicks and it still works just fine.
Smith is a lot better actor than anything Deadshot role will ever require.

He was never a great actor in any of them. It was pretty much Will Smith playing Will Smith each time. Not to say I didn't enjoy Bad Boys or Independence Day but c'mon, great actor? Please.

People have a hard time seeing Will Smith as anyone but Will Smith because he isn't known as a transformative actor. While he is a very good actor, in general his movies involve him being Will Smith. Much like Kevin Costner. You don't go into a Kevin Costner movie thinking "I wonder how he will immerse himself in this role" you go into it thinking "I wonder how much Kevin Costner is going to glower at the camera in a broodingly contemplative way".

I think he'll do great, personally, because his acting ability is well beyond what's needed for a Superhero flick. There's going to be a dissonance present though because it's going to be Will Smith playing Deadshot and not Deadshot.

Compare that with Leto who is known for being an amazing character actor yet even he isn't given the benefit of the doubt when it comes to playing Joker. I don't think the hesitancy with Smith has anything to do with the color of his skin or the source material.
