But tomb raider fans are mostly on playstation because Sony did this exact thing themselves. Tomb raider one was on the Saturn, Sony paid to keep it off the Saturn and it later came to PC. You're fine with them doing this once, but not twice?

shhhhh let him have it both ways!

Does FF have a loyal fan base on XBO? Sales don't seem to indicate that.

Are we really going to use the totally mediocre spin-off Type-O as an example?

Mainline FF games would likely be popular on whatever platform they released on.

It would sell some because it's a big game. It's pretty obvious that there isn't some huge loyal FF fan base on the XBO.

I agree with you if that's PS or Nintendo platform. MS? I am not so sure especially FFXIII sold better on PS3 worldwide and better than X360 in US

Final Fantasy 13 sold 500,000 units on Xbox 360 in a month. Final Fantasy 7 is pretty much the game that made JRPGs mainstream in the US. It's one of those games that even people who don't regularly play JRPGs have fond memories of. Yes, it's going to sell significantly more on PS4, especially considering 13 sold more on PS3 despite a much lesser install base in the region - and now the roles are flipped, but Final Fantasy is a mainstream brand that has fandom across most platforms.

Dug up an old Abdiel post as far as JRPG pre-orders are faring on Xbox:

Mm, no, I think you're wrong. I'm speaking purely from retail perspective here; Across just the one district, XV has over 300 preorders on the PS4, and 10 on the XB1, and KH3 has over 200 on the PS4 and 10 on the XB1. I wouldn't be surprised if those 10 are the same on both games.

The US is the primary market for the XB1, yes indeed, but the audience buying the system isn't showing any consumption of Japanese games, or even broadcasting forward reaching interest in them. These companies do use preorders as a metric for showing potential interest, you know.

Last generation, the market for the 360 and PS3 was very different, the impression in the US was a significant disparity. That doesn't exist now, and we've seen a minimizing of what demographics are buying which console. Rather than a console for a wide range of games that the 360 still sold to, it's largely become just shooters, racing, sports, and the huge multi-plats like Assassin's Creed.

What insight we're getting is that Japanese publishers are trying to push the PS4 even more now. Microsoft showing up at TGS would be irrelevant anyway. They have no market power or pressure for Japanese influence, less so than ever before.

One year console exclusivity...that's more than what i thought it would be.

Maybe the ps4 version will be the "Game of the year/Definite" one.

That's the only way they can justify having the game coming 1 year later....

you'll definitely get a Definitive edition for all versions if they're doing a PS4 version.

Senjutsu am cry. Cant believe that guy actually thought this wouldn't release on PS4.

I dont mind the wait since i'm not hyped for this at all and will probably buy it once its cheap.

People buy more than one game per month. Battlefront, Call of Duty, Fallout and Tomb Raider will all sell well.
This comes out the month after Rock Band 4, Halo 5, Rainbow Six Siege, Guitar Hero Live, Assassin's Creed Syndicate and Just Dance 2016.

It also comes out the same month as Need for Speed, Black Ops III, Fallout 4, Battlefront, and XCOM 2.

In the following month, Just Cause 3 and Hitman come out.

Also possibly due out are No Man's Sky, Persona 5 and Fable Legends.

It's a stacked, stacked, stacked holiday season. I don't know how you can just say "People buy more than one game per month," and leave it at that. Well how many people do that? How many do they end up buying? 2, 3, 5? I find that hard to believe. Most people don't drop hundreds of dollars on games per month. Some of us on GAF might, but we're not the average consumer. People are going to have to choose.

Was not expecting them to announce it this early. I guess everyone already knew but this could eat into sales. I'd say Fallout 4 will do that anyway, they got boned by that.

Just enough time for Ps4-only gamers to not give a shit any more, and after Uncharted 4 lol.

AND the game is currently slated to come out day and date with Fallout 4 on just one platform. Genius moves Square.

For the record, I am a recent owner of the Xbone and will maybe pick this one up. But it doesn't make it any less dumb a business move. I hope they got a fat FAT check from Microsoft in return for launching their big budget game on only the 2nd place platform and hurting their potential long run sales. It's a slap in the face of all their PS3 fans who helped make the original a success.

And yes, this also applies to Street Fighter V.

I really do think after a year, less people care to get a game. People just move on to whatever the current hype of the holiday season is, not a game from last year.

It's going to compete directly with Fallout 4 this year, which means I'll be shocked if I don't find it for 29.99 or less this Black Friday. PS4 version is coming out around the inevitable Destiny sequel, which means I won't be buying it then. Their timing on both ends seems pretty terrible except PC.

The strongest advantage for Microsoft with this deal was the ambiguity of the situation. People left in the dark wondering "is this game coming one day for PS4 ?".

I would never have expected Square Enix to reveal the PC and PS4 versions of the game several months BEFORE the Xbox release.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is going to be promoted by Microsoft during the coming months, probably being showed again at the Xbox gamescom conference, and yet now everyone will know that it's coming for PC and PS4, and when.

Still a big asset for Xbox this year, but this announcement has clearly diminished its influence.

That has me curious as well. What will it sell for when the Xbox version will probably be $40 max at the time.

It'll probably be like $10 on Steam by the time it launches on PS4 too lol

I hope Square Enix doesn't consider the game a failure when it ends up not selling as much as the first.

Not sure why you're using Type-0's quality as an excuse as it affected sales on both the XBO and PS4 versions. Not to mention, it included the FFXV demo so some consumers bought it for that. Type-0 gives us the snapshot of the Final Fantasy fanbase split between both platforms, which is 9 to 1 favoring the PS4.

The JRPG fanbase split between the PS4 & XBO is not going to stay the same. It will change throughout this gen, with the fanbase increasingly favoring the PS4.

That was ages ago, before I even played video games so I kind of missed all of that (though I do know that it happened). I also don't think the situations are entirely comparable (because the franchise and its fanbase weren't quite as established then as they are today and only one game had been released on the Saturn) and, in any case, the people who made those deals probably don't work at Eidos/Square Europe anymore, anyway. But yes, that was a shitty move, as well.

Are we sure it requires Windows 10 on PC? The way the quote in the OP is written (Windows 10 via Steam) it looks like it is but reading the actually release it seems to refer to Windows 10 as a digital storefront (Windows 10 and Steam).
I'm curious about that as well... not that it matters much since I'll be running Windows 10 by then, but if MS is planning to impose OS restrictions, they must really be desperate for people to move on from older versions.

I think they said this a little too early.

I don't
I will buy for xbone now
Was holding out hoping ps4 would be early 2016 but now I'll just get it for xbone
It is pretty much console exclusive to xbone for the longest amount of time it possibly could have been

Don't know how to observe this, they avoid Uncharted but I cannot not seeing this end well in Holiday 2016, which will probably be even more insane.

Not to mention they pre-announced a GOTY edition as well, wtf!?

I guess PS4 owners just like to buy mediocre shitty games. Xbox owners with that high class taste.

The best thing MS can do is bundle the game. It releasing on the same day as FO4 is ballsy and I really see sales being eaten up.

Also I highly doubt most ps4 users will care about TR after a year especially coming after uncharted.

Releasing the same day as Fallout 4 on Xbox and one year later on PS4, potentially in the middle of a host of fresh "new" releases.

Square may have to do something special to avoid sending this game out to die twice.

I noted it would sell decently since it's such a big game. However, the XBO isn't the 360. The 360 had an install base advantage. It had the advantage of having money hatted a lot of JRPG's to somewhat build a fan base for FF13. XBO has neither of those advantages. Tomb Raider on the other hand has a large Playstation fan base. FF 7 would sell decent on XBO, but there is no big fan base waiting for it.

Sony had to PAY to keep a game off Saturn? You'd think it being the Saturn would be enough justification.

Man, I got a long wait. Holiday 2016. Oh well, I'll fill that time in with some other games. I mean, I could rent it on Xbox One, but I think I can wait.

Looks like I'll be able to pick up the PC version in the summer sale as early next year is probably late feb/ early march and will be busy with other games then.

So, basically timed exclusives make perfect sense for Sony but are ridiculous and unfair when MS pursues them. Ok, got it. If only they had an event in the Olympics for mental gymnastics, we'd have ourselves a sure-fire gold medal winner!

$4.99 future steam sale confirmed. But seriously, I feel bad for people that enjoyed the 2013 game, wanted to play it this year, and have to wait.

But how that impacts the number of pre-orders of the XB1 version?

If i understood your first post, the announcement was meant to entice people that are interested in the game to buy at launch. But what i'm seeing is PS4/PC owners saying that the will wait.

X1 owners that wanted the game probably would/will get the same the same way.

I don't think it'll affect it much either way unless people have both consoles. X1 only owners will probably pick it up anyway since it's a highly anticipated title. I'm guessing this might sway people who want it on PC more and can wait a few months.

A full year? This is the kind of treatment Wii U use to get but when you see it done to the top selling platform for the generation you have to bow down to how effective Microsoft is at this business

way to go I guess

That is a very long wait for PS4 owners. I hope that price will be maximum of $40, or at least bundled with a lot of DLC [but if it is a DLC like in last TR, they better not bother].

I personally don't think this kind of delay will enable good sales on PS4.
