Honestly I might cancel my xb1 preorder now that it's confirmed. I will be busy with everything else coming out this fall anyways, and it will almost certainly be the "goty" edition when it comes out on ps4.

Also, the ocd part of me wants the ps4 version since I played the first one on ps4. I want the boxes to match.

Still excited about this game though, loved the first

Wasn't the Saturn all but dead in NA by the time TR was released?

Also I don't think the N64 was considered was it? The original TR didn't seem like it would have been made on Nintendo's more "kid friendly" console.

But why would they make a deal then? ;) That doesn't make any sense.
And no, in 1997 Saturn wasn't dead. And N64 wasn't a "kids" console, it also got Resident Evil later in its life and had many games that were not for kids.

Fine. You're right. I'm sure Tomb Raider PS4 will sell 0 copies and Square Enix will feel great shame for having made this deal.

I think that's a slight strawman. No one is saying it will sell zero copies. But do you honestly think the same demand for the title will be there a year from now amongst a sea of shiny new current gen only 2016 titles?

It's not really the best time to release a game that should have really come out months ago, and likely won't be part of the conversation anywhere. There'll be titles like Final Fantasy and Mass Effect to contend with, and I don't think it unrealistic that the game could potentially under perform as a result.

Summer 2016 would have been perfect.

You just said yourself that "nobody" didn't literally mean zero sales. Just that the vast majority aren't going to give a shit once it eventually rolls because of the reasons stated above.

I think it's important to understand what this means. My problem is that people are disagreeing with me when I'm clearly trying to take a nuanced stance. I don't expect it to be a top seller for PS4 in the Holiday 2016 season, but unless it's a barebones port at full price, I think there's still A market for the game, even if it's a greatly diminished market, if (and yes I'm hedging here by noting that the game's quality will factor into it) the game is good.

I'll wait, doesn't bother me, if it was coming to PS4 as well as X1 this year it would have likely ended up a Christmas present from someone in the family, being shoved in around the releases of CoD, FO4 and BF means it would be the forth game on the list of buying order in those few weeks. But if it ends up being any good and doesn't stupidly end up in the same situation between a bunch of other top games next year, I'll definitely pick it up. If I was SE I would try and get out TR next year before the big Oct/Nov game releases.

It's going to be interesting to see how it does compared to the first, SE were so scathing and disappointed with the last TR sales after release that this deal to have the game on less viable platforms has made little sense to me, but maybe the definitive edition sales showed that enough people were willing to wait. I'm sure MS loves that FO4 and TR are out near each other, I fully expect big advertising with both as pack ins, but from SE sales perspective it must suck for TR to be straight after CoD, same day as FO4, and just before Battlefront.

Definitely not. The Saturn released in 95. TR came in 96, TR2 in '97. Dreamcast was 2 years later in 99.

Regardless, Saturn sounded doomed from the start. The original TR would have been remembered more fondly on PlayStation because it performed better than the Saturn version.

Because like it or not, videogames have a perceived shelf life. Most people decide if they want to pay 60 bucks day one, or wait 6 months and get it for 30. Knowing a game has been out for a year elsewhere and that other late ports to a new platform drop in price pretty quick, then why pay 60?

Sure some games can do it, but this isn't GTAV.

You're exactly right, which is why I laughed when so many people killed ubisoft for delaying the WiiU version of rayman legends 6 months rather than release an 'old port' on the other consoles. That perception is very real. It's dumb, but it's real.

Is anyone in here arguing that the game will have literally no audience for launching late? Even if it's a barebones port, there's still going to be a market for it.

I'll go in with you on the 2 million if you want. I think it may creep past a million. I don't think it will get close to two million
I'm not confident on 2 million either, hence the much lower bet. But I think its possible due to increased console adoption in general plus FFXV possibly being a lot less disappointing.

I'll do the bet with you if the other guy refuses, but I'm waiting for him to respond(PM'd him).

This has always struck me as a weird and down right stupid business decision on Square's part.

WE KNOW that the PS4 version is well into development and was originally planed to be released at the same time as the Xbone version. Basically MS paid Square to set on the PS4 version. The money hat must have been huge in order for Square to just leave money on the table.

PC release is a lot sooner than I thought it'd be. Awesome!

Sucks for people waiting for the PS4 version. No way I would have thought it'd be 6 or so months.

Sure. The follow up to the most successful 16 bit system was 'doomed from the start' because they were going up against the creator of the Walkman who was making their first console. Hindsight is 20/20 and all that...

Enjoy the long ass wait.

Will get on XB1 and PC.

As a PC gamer it's not like we have alot to brag about after waiting for GTAV and games like Dark Souls even if its only a month or two. It doesn't bother me, because if I really want to play a game I will. I bought Dark Souls 2 on PS3 and traded it in a month later for the PC version. I also could have played GTA5 on PS3 or 360 if I wanted.

I also find it funny people saying they will be busy with UC4...please. They are gonna be like 20 hour games you could finish both games in a month easily. I have a PS4 and will be getting both and when I'm done with them I will play way to much Dark Souls 3.

I'm shocked that they announced the PS4 version this far from the Xbox release. Now this whole 1 year exclusivity looks even more petty then it did before.

I can easily wait a year though, there are so many games coming out between now and then that I will likely still be playing when the PS4 version comes out.

That's a long ass time. I might buy the Xbox One version used if it's as good or better than the last one. Otherwise I'll just wait for the PS4 version which I assume would be a GOTY edition of some sort.

If it's any good, I'll pick it on PC at discounted price. Shitty practices should not be encouraged. 1 year wait on PS4 = DOA imo (on that platform).

Dunno rather to get it on XB1 and play it a year in advance or wait to get the, very likely better, PS4 version.

The main issue of waiting is spoilers.

yep. judging by the reception that TR DE got...I expect this to at least sell decently. there will likely be a large portion of PS4 owners that don't own both consoles and are strictly console only gamers that would be willing to pick this up if it gets reviewed well, has all DLC, priced accordingly etc. especially outside the US.

Ugh, a year long wait for the PS4 version pisses me off. Again, we go back to the argument about funding your own exclusive games vs. paying publishers so games don't come out on other consoles. It's just a shitty practice all around. Having to wait so long for BioShock on PS3 made it incredibly difficult for me to get into that game until years later.

The xbones JRPG audience growth potential is close to zero. Ps4 growth is much much higher. SE is throwing everything it has at the ps4 JRPG wise.

Can just see it now.

Tomb Raider November 8th on PS4.

Last week in October - Games with gold are delighted to announced that the hit game Tomb Raider is coming free to Games with Gold for all gold members. It'll be available for the first half of November

That would be such a great move haha

This one year delay makes their exclusive deal very meaningful. At the same time, I think PS4 owners are going to have many third party games to keep them busy this year, and then a plethora of exclusives next year.

When this game gets released for PS4, Square will ensure it comes packed with all DLC content and is a complete edition.

I wonder if FF7:RE will be exclusive to the PS4 for a year or more.

Regardless, Saturn sounded doomed from the start.

Yeah, in retrospective.

The original TR would have been remembered more fondly on PlayStation because it performed better than the Saturn version.

It performed better? Did you even try to google that? Both versions were give or take. Missing effects the other version had, not so wobbly textures on Saturn, better textures on PSX, better framerate on Saturn, higher res on PSX... But yes, sure, PSX version "performed" better.
No matter how much we try to bend history here, Sony paid money so Tomb Raider didn't appear on other consoles. Done.

Most folks here aren't being very literal with their choice of words, so why be so particular about the usage of terms like "nobody", which in essense, translates to "significantly less people."?

OK, my problem with it is that I think there needs to be at least a little care. "Nobody" should not -- in my mind -- simply be "significantly less people" unless that number of people is actually a negligible amount. I argued that I understood that people weren't actually arguing that it meant "literally zero people will buy this," but even in the figurative sense, I'm thinking that "nobody" signifies that it's such a negligible amount that they might as well not release it at all because the number of interested consumers just won't make the port worthwhile. I reject the notion that it can represent some arbitrarily determined, relatively low number.

Buy it on X1 art BB for $38 (for gcu members). Beat it in a month, trade it in or sell it, probably for your whole $38 back and buy the ps4 version down the line whenever you are jonesing to play it again.

So now we're just arguing over the use of the word "nobody" in TR PS4's sales even though everyone here implicitly understands the use of "nobody" isn't used literally. Nobody's gonna buy it, but nobody is still somebody, just nobody in the relative sense.

*snorts*

So you are arguing semantics... jesus christ.

One word: Worldwide. Germany and other countries will buy the game in 2016 for PC/PS4. Only in the US/UK the deal will have a big impact. In the rest of the world people will simply wait because they don't care about the X1 version anyway.

TR came out in 1996 on the Saturn - I bought it for the system at launch.

N64 had Mortal Kombat, Doom, Resident Evil and Killer Instinct Gold. It wasnt a kiddy system.

TR DE was a remaster/port which was a considerable upgrade over previous console versions on a time the PS4 didn't have that of a hot lineup.

I mean it could do ok numbers, but we'll see if it was worth for SE.

Does Bioshock have a tangible audience outside of the US/UK? and I still bet it did better WW on 360 than PS3.
This is not what you asked first, and not what I replied to.

Anyway.

i heard on GAF that Tomb raider is especially strong in europe. So might be it sells better on PS4 in mainland Europe, even with 1 year delay...

I expect the Nathan Drake collection to out sell Tomb Raider. The console user base is 2:1

I would be very surprised if that happened. I know the ps4 has the bigger user base, but the NDC is $60 and has the multiplayer cut out of it. I would put my money on Lara.

I think with any exclusivity it makes slightly more Xbone owners consider buying it than they otherwise would have done if it was multi-platform release. The numbers will be insignificant to the PS4 sales they're losing and potential longterm damage to the franchise.

A 6-8 month wait I could probably excuse but a full year no matter what bonus content they include as a grovelling apology will mean I'll skip its release and buy it used or heavily reduced in 2017 if ever. Gamers are loyal customers not to be crossed and stunts like this harm your business.

I think that's a slight strawman. No one is saying it will sell zero copies. But do you honestly think the same demand for the title will be there a year from now amongst a sea of shiny new current gen only 2016 titles?

Yes because, A) ps4 has a higher market share, and B) Many of those people may not have PC's that can handle Tomb Raider. Also, this is not a console selling brand, so very few customers are going to move to xbone FOR this game.

Mankind Divided will use DX12, and that game is also slated for 1H 2016.

And DX12 is not for adding new effects, it is mostly for giving developers faster access to hardware and taking advantage from all resources [especially on CPU side]. Expect the game to run better, not to have more "DX12 effects". And BTW, "more effects" is a thing that will naturally happen in a case when awesome Nixxes ports any Eidos game to PC [if nothing else, lots of sliders for old built-in visual effects].

I'm talking about new rendering techniques and other enhancements that could take advantage of new GPU tech. The game will run faster, but DX12 has ofher benefits too.

Depends on if Tomb Raider gets included with every Xbox One purchase for the holidays.

They did this with Fifa/Forza 5 for the Euro launch. It was stupid, ineffective and expensive.

I'd rather they gave away the Rare collection given its insane value and low price point.

Waiting a year is fine for Tomb Raider. Last game was cool but not my favorite. If this arrangement had been for Dark Souls 3 I would be rioting in the streets.
