Why are people saying that no one will buy this game when it releases on PS4? Is it because you think that they do not want to feel like second class? I have no problems buying a game a year or 5 later if the game is great.

Sound like people who personally own a PS4 and don't plan on picking it up a year later. IMO the game is going to do ok. Sure it's a year later but it's a console with a larger install base plus it probably won't be $60.

It was also kept away from n64. And the deal was made when the competition was still strong. Looking back now is easy but not representative of the situation back then.

Wasn't the Saturn all but dead in NA by the time TR was released?

Also I don't think the N64 was considered was it? The original TR didn't seem like it would have been made on Nintendo's more "kid friendly" console.

Beats me, I also don't mind waiting for a good game.

For the record, I completely understand and have in fact already conceded that I don't think that the day 365 release of Tomb Raider on PS4 will sell anywhere near as well as the day 1 release would have. But there's a difference between asserting "it'd sell a hell of a lot more if it wasn't delayed" and "nobody is going to want to buy this a year late." And I understand that we're not talking literally nobody, but in the relative sense. However, I still think that's unfair.

I don't really think it's unfair. A year old cross-gen port vs. hypothetically: TLG, Horizon, Mass Effect 4, Final Fantasy 15 and all the other yearly third party shit.

I don't care what the quality is of this thing, it's gonna be swept under the rug a year from now around Holiday time.

If they keep it exclusive then they're locking it onto the smaller install base, something they clearly don't want to ultimately do.

Honestly this deal looks worse and worse to me for the games prospects.
Uncharted 4, Street Fighter 5, and Horizon will all be out by then, in addition to endless multiplatform games and whatever other exclusives end up being confirmed for early-mid-late 2016. Tomb Raider will be dead on arrival on PS4.

The deal is so bad Square-Enix just looks laughable.

They were originally competing with Uncharted at launch, though. They're probably a little annoyed now that this game doesn't have that to compete with now.

Oh yeah, your'e right I remember that being a factor. I imagine they are somewhat relieved that it's releasing later.

Xbox 1 will get a final beta build day 1 , some bugs and issues but nothing totally game breaking. PC port will fix those bugs and adds some extra graphics options and over 6-9 months DLC will trickle out. By the time the PS4 version hits, all of the issues will be gone and it will come with all of the DLC as well as a possible ps4 only DLC/costume pack. I also think MS is paying for all promotion /advertising this calendar year and then this task will fall upon Square for the PC and PS4 editions - it stands to reason that more sales on Xbox one = better ps4 port later.

Can just see it now.

Tomb Raider November 8th on PS4.

Last week in October - Games with gold are delighted to announced that the hit game Tomb Raider is coming free to Games with Gold for all gold members. It'll be available for the first half of November

That would be hilarious, but Square would never approve that.

Square-Enix, since the early PS360 days, has always seemed to be first in the line to accept Microsoft's money, so this doesn't really surprise me.

And if the PS4 version sells poorly? It'll be spun as proof that they were right to do what they did.

All I know is, as much as I like the first Tomb Raider game, I won't buy this at all, because I refuse to support this practice. Just like I won't be buying Street Fighter V.

i guess this game will be a loss on the playstation 4!! with more than a year away!! i hope its going to be game of the year edition when is out!!

Does Sony still have a requirement for something extra on late ports?

Don't think so, but it would be pretty stupid of Crystal Dynamics to not do so at that point if they still want to charge $60 for it. Even then if it's just all the DLC I'd still have an issue paying $60 for it myself.

oh yeah, I meant annoyed in the sense that they probably didn't need to sign this deal with MS for advertising/promotion since UC isn't releasing, but who knows. SE is probably happy either way since MS is pushing this game heavily and will probably be advertising like crazy during the winter. I can smell the Halo 5/TR bundle from here.

That's my thought, it would be suicidal to bring out a game a year later at full price as is.

Considering what happened with the last game, this decision still baffles me. And I think it'll just stunt the positive growth path the reboot started.

Fine. You're right. I'm sure Tomb Raider PS4 will sell 0 copies and Square Enix will feel great shame for having made this deal.

Not gonna buy this game full price on PS4 a year later. Will however buy it at $40 and maybe even $50 if it comes with allthe DLC.

Definitely not. The Saturn released in 95. TR came in 96, TR2 in '97. Dreamcast was 2 years later in 99.

You just said yourself that "nobody" didn't literally mean zero sales. Just that the vast majority aren't going to give a shit once it eventually rolls because of the reasons stated above.

Most folks here aren't being very literal with their choice of words, so why be so particular about the usage of terms like "nobody", which in essense, translates to "significantly less people."?

Which is why I'm hoping for a lower price tag. No way SE is gonna release a year old game full price

Most of tomb raider fan base is on PlayStation, heck the tomb raider port sold like 70% on the PS4 early last year. Today with the installed base and most of the fans on PlayStation, combined with a year timed exclusivity, unless S.E. got a 9 figure paycheck (like $150 million cash) and Microsoft pays for the marketing, then it wasn't worth it.

Edit:make that $200 million.

So does the PS4 version's full development start after the xbone version is finished, or do we think it will be completed in time for the PC release and shoved on a shelf to go rusty for a year? Poor Lara, this split release could be the death of her.

I'll be getting it for PS4 anyway (as long as it's up to scratch), vanilla version, or not. A game is a game no matter how old it is. I still managed to enjoy Bioshock and Mass Effect even if they were later and ropier than the 360 versions.

I like messing with the backhand commentaries. What do you call fake salty? Lol

Is there a name-brand/product like that?

Falty.

Will be a bargain bin pickup from me then, I will have waited a year, so a few more months won't make any difference, especially if other games I want release at the same time.

Will piss myself if this game flops hard on both consoles.

Releasing later does not equate to a better port. I remember a MW2 DLC on the 360 having a bug allowing entry to a rock. Was it fixed on the ps3 version a month later when that was released? Was it fuck.

My guess is that those peoples' emotions are getting the better of them. Some subset of these people will break down and buy it anyway, even after the complaining. For some number of people it may be the principle of the matter, which I can understand.

If there was a game I was excited about, but it got artificially delayed on my platform of choice for a year, I'd be bummed out about the wait but I'd still get it. Why deprive myself of a fun game just because of some shady back room dealings?

Except when they did with the Definitive Edition? :lol They'll have no problem charging full price.

Yeah I mean I can kind of see that which is scary but there isn't gonna be that new console drought that TR:DE had. If they plan to release November next year they are gonna go against the Fall 2016 lineup which is gonna be deadly for a year old game.

Do we know how well Bioshock sold on the PS3 versus the XBox 360? That's probably the biggest title I can think of that came out a year later on a competing platform. Although that was a new IP, and the PS3 port wasn't known about at release.

I think Tomb Raider will do alright. The PS4 version obviously won't sell as strongly as it would have had it been released alongside the XBox One version, but sales of the XBox One version may be boosted because of that. Along with whatever marketing and money Microsoft is providing, I'm sure that it'll work out ok for Square Enix.

Yeah, and the thread got locked about it too. Would be nice to be acknowledged that we got the story right.

Rooster Teeth scooped the IG people and instantly turned The Know into something people pay attention to.

Imma go out on a limb and say the 360 version vastly outsold the PS3 one.

Yeah. It's kind of strange. I understand not wanting to play the game late but totally not buying sounds really counterintuitive if you're really interested in the game in the first place.

Because like it or not, videogames have a perceived shelf life. Most people decide if they want to pay 60 bucks day one, or wait 6 months and get it for 30. Knowing a game has been out for a year elsewhere and that other late ports to a new platform drop in price pretty quick, then why pay 60?

Sure some games can do it, but this isn't GTAV.

No one = "A lot less people"

Reason = late port, ports don't get a lot of marketing spotlight, and it'll be competing for media attention of Holiday 2016 blockbusters.
