Why would they stop making Halo and Gears of War? Those things sell, people still want them, and they can have new IP's on top of them. I have no idea why Sony plans to end Uncharted, a lot of people would definitely buy more.

I don't think Sony plans to end Uncharted...regardless of whether Naughty Dog continues to make it.

So it's more constructive to talk about how stupid or not stupid they are without knowing how much Microsoft paid them? Maybe Microsoft even forfeited the license fees on top of paying them a good sum.

Why, yes, yes it is more constructive.

We can discuss the nuances of what we know, how it stands with the market as it is now relative to when it was likely signed, and what it could mean. But to assume that "there are more MBAs employed by Square than on a message board" to shut down discussion is utterly pointless.

Kind of a bummer that it's so far away but with all the shit dropping this year that's A-OK with me... then again, Holiday 2016 is looking to be just as stacked with shit like Horizon, TLG, Mass Effect and god knows what else coming. And even still, if I was to get it when it's out on PC I might be still be playing Ratchet and/or U4...

Christ, my wallet

Why? A year is a long ass time and Uncharted will have come and gone by then. A year is more than long enough to affect perception and sales. Look at Bioshock and Lost Planet. Weren't they both a year later last gen?

~6 months is still too close to Uncharted. It's not a question of competing directly, but rather that fewer people will be inclined to buy "Not-Uncharted 2: Electric Boogaloo" after getting the real thing.

Halo hasn't had a mainline game since 2012. They made some twin-stick mobile games, ported the others to Xbox in MCC.

Gears got Judgment which whilst I liked more than others was a bit of a misstep, but it was over 2 years ago and Gears 4 isn't out until Holiday 16.

Microsoft have released plenty of new IP in the last couple of years; Ryse, SO (both of which got big marketing pushes), Ori, Screamride, State of Decay (which sold over 2m before it came to Xbox One and a sequel is incoming), theres been some other smaller stuff

They also have Quantum Break, Scalebound, Sea of Thieves and ReCore coming, I don't think Microsoft lack new IPs or don't push the ones they do make. Im sure next year especially will be big on that front given they have so many.

You don't rest your biggest franchises, no-one else does it why would Microsoft?

Halo Spartan Assault, Halo MCC and Halo 5.
Forza 5, FH2 and Forza 6. All on Xb1. I'm not criticising fans of these franchises, I'm just talking from my own perspective.

I think my frustration stems from past generations where we saw new ips actually driving the new platforms forward. For Xbox 360 it was Gears, for Playstation it was Uncharted. High quality games that impressed people and new IP. I'm not seeing that this gen much, it's true we have had new IP but a lot of them have disappointed. I just can't wait for that new game or games that are fresh, new that wow people.

Haha I may join you with the *gulp* if Halo 5 turns out to be bad. I'm going to give 343 one more shot! Though they did nail it with the #HuntTheTruth webepisodes.
HuntTheTruth was amazing indeed, I hope they used those same writers for the campaign in Halo 5, and I'd much rather have Halo being handled by 343i than Bungie of now.

Interesting, a lot of people were expecting it sooner, not sure what would lead anyone to believe it would only be 6 months.

"Holiday 2015, exclusive", that what MS kept repeating. It leads some to believe that as soon as Holiday 2015 ends, the game will release everywhere else.

Me, buying (well, being gifted) GTA V on PC and playing it for the first time. So that is like over 1 and half years since it originally released. It's hardly an issue when so many other fantastic games to play in the iterim

I think you missed the point of that post

Oh I'll agree with you there and actually I still feel 343i has made the best Halo campaign, but that's just my opinion. I would have liked it to be more "open" but I really enjoyed it.

Right now everything appears to be coming together for Halo 5 so I'm pretty excited.

So use imaginary data to drive discussion into imaginary realms rather than end the discussion while it's still grounded in reality. Okay, then.

In a way i'm glad that this series has been turned to shit (for years now) thanks to Crystal Dynamics continuous efforts to turn it into something completely different from what it used to be so i can no longer care if the game will ever come out to a platform of my choice.

If the series was still the real TOMB RAIDER experience i used to love so much back in the day then i would have been very disappointed with this delay.

Those game put up monster number on the PS3 upon the delay release.

No, use limited data, coupled with theoretical and empirical knowledge, to drive discussion and analysis based on what is available.

There's a whole field dedicated to it, economics.

With this news I think its time I finally buy the dark horse tomb raider comics and maybe the book.

Has anyone read the book? is it worth reading?

Ryse was a new IP designed to drive XB1 sales at launch. it was a balance, this, Forza 5 was a good indicator of what the XB1 could do. Ryse still looks incredible today and whilst review wise it didn't hit the heights MS hope for, its real downfall was the botched XB1 reveal and launch.

Remasters don't sell like mainline games do and I doubt Spartan Assault did either, if you like Halo that much there is plenty to keep you occupied if not ignore them.

There hasn't been a new AAA game game since November 2012, 3 year gap is exactly what you talked about and for new experiences you got that.

I don't see the value in "resting" Forza personally, racing games rarely "drive new platforms forward" no matter how good they are.

This gen has taken a while to get going but the new stuff is there to try and we can clearly more is coming, the solution isn't to rest the popular franchises, they are the ones that sell consoles and get people on the platform that will buy the new IPs you want.

We can have both, and we are getting both, great news! Personally I think we've had a few really good new IPs this generation, even if they didn't push the platforms so much

Yes I think it might have been PVZ. In fact, EA had a one day sale giving it away for free to any PS4 owner - that's where I picked mine up. I never paid a penny in any DLC. Its a great game. I guess they gave it away because it is online only and perhaps the PS4 community was too small.

Yep, definitely an insult to those who 'bought' it but that's EA for ya.

I also downloaded that day. Fun game and thought it was nice of EA to give Playstion gamers a gift in celebration of Playstion 20th Anniversary.

ETA: Too bad Tomb Raider is a long wait, but honestly, there are so many games coming out soon and lots to played now. I can wait.

Not doubting Ryse's visual credentials dude, visually I thought it was great but let down by monotonous gameplay

Yea, no, in economics you use as little as possible known variables to build models while holding the remaining variables constant, you don't bunch as many variables as you can together.

So it's releasing a year later on PS4 and people think it'll be straight port?
Interesting.

And therein lies the problems with pushing new IP to launch a console, its a massive risk and that's why they are normally surrounded by proven content.

Yea, that platform fee is what I meant. We don't know exactly how much Microsoft is paying Square Enix, maybe it's enough so SE can deal with a one year late PS4 version and a fraction of the sales. They are also likely to have a bundle, so if all else was normal, Microsoft would normally have to pay SE for the game for however many bundles sold, right? Maybe they forfeited those platform fees. We don't know, it's all speculation, and thus pointless.

I don't think is pointless. I like having all kind of conversations here on GAF.

If you approach everything with this mentality 90% of topics here are pointless, because they are based in observation and opinions, even the sales one.

And if that's pointless and the discussion shouldn't happen, why are you still posting in this thread? =)

A full year, hmm, I understand Microsoft is behind the scheduling but I figure it would make more sense to release during the summer drought instead of waiting for the holiday onslaught.

I'm assuming Holiday 2016 will be huge, though I could be wrong.

expected, I did not believe in exclusivity especially from MS when most games end up on PC..
six months after Uncharted 4 is a good window to launch don't see a point to launch it sooner.

I'm fine with this. But when is it $29.99 with all the DLC, is the real question.

As for how well it will do, it was my understanding that the first game only became profitable after late ports. It will probably sell just fine on PS4.

As long as it's £5 on Steam by Xmas 2016 it's all good. Not paying anywhere near full price after the abomination (opinion) that was TR2013.

This thread seems to have many branches :)
But, furthering discussion with unavailable data is not exactly the same as furthering it with opinions.

I can't see a source on the page, except "Square Enix"..

Regardless, if it's true then fuck yeah. PC release is earlier than expected :D

Edit: Just got the press-release in my email, so it's legit yay.

Lets hope The PC version is all it can be and not dumbed down (graphically I mean, maybe DX12?).

1 year console exclusive. who said 6 months?
Didn't Kagari said Square wasn't happy with Uncharted 4's delay? That probably three off Square's plan and were indeed planning to launch the PS4 version and PC in early 2016 together but now with U4 an early 2016 title they decided to launch it later as to not compete with Sony's massive exclusive.

At least that's my theory.

So it's releasing a year later on PS4 and people think it'll be straight port?
Interesting.

What else would it be ???

If X1 stays at 900p then PS4 will normally be 1080p

If both are 1080p and there are slowdowns on X1, there will be less on PS4.

Otherwise I don´t know what else they could deliver.

I don't remember about these specifically, but has Bioshock or Mass Effect been "enhanced" in their PS3 releases?
Not the same thing, PS3 was a tricky system and lots of multiplats were worse on PS3 than 360 because of that, not sure but I think Mass Effect was one of those.
PS4 on the other hand is easy to develop for and more powerful and multiplats has so far always been better on PS4 than XB1. And TR:DE ran at 50-60fps on PS4 and 30fps on XB1 . I think it's quite safe to say that Rise of The Tomb Raider will be better on PS4 than XB1. Only question is how much better? And will it be better than the PC version too?
I'm not waiting to find out though. I just want to know how much worse the XB1 version is than the PC version before I choose between those where to put my money.
