Rise of the Tomb Raider coming to PC Early 2016. PS4 Holiday 2016

I'm kinda grateful in a way that I ended up not enjoying the Tomb Raider reboot very much, even though I thought I would. A year's wait would've been pretty agonising for a game I was anticipating greatly.

I'm a bit worried. I love Tomb Raider and the reboot, even though it's a different genre as the old games was one of my favourite games that years.
But that's a long time frame. I hope the game still sells good enough. Square initially didn't seem happy about the sales of the 2013 game. I hope this staggered release won't have a negative impact on the series and for the developers.
Yeah, that was pretty nuts, remember when TR sold 3.4 million units in four weeks but still failed to hit their expectations?

Just one question about the PC version.

In the official PR, it mentions "coming to Windows 10 and Steam". How to understand it?

1. Coming to steam, but only exclusive to Win 10 operating system?
2. Coming to steam (which will be for all Windows versions) and also to Windows 10 store (which is obvious only for Windows 10)?

Any one knows about it?

I think they meant that it's available on steam and the windows 10 store. But I could be wrong and windows 10 is actually the requirement to play the game.

I don't think anyone knows for sure yet. It would limit the game's audience somewhat, but it may be part of the deal with Microsoft that it only be available for W10.

PS4 will definitely need a price-cut this holiday season if it wants to remain competitive with XB1.

Though marketing/bundling on most major AAA games this Fall will likely lessen the blow significantly.

It's funny that a console with a near 2:1 lead worldwide needs to worry about remaining competitive.

Doesn't seem realistic the way console games are frontloaded.

The PS4 install base will be quite large by the time Fall 2016 comes around, so that alone should guarantee more sales.

Not to mention Tomb Raider will likely get curb-stomped this year due to its launch period being the same as Fallout 4.

AFTER Xbox One and PC sales are done?

I should have clarified, I don't care about PC, I'm only talking about direct comparisons with XB1.

I'm getting this for PS4. Definitely 2nd hand and for no more than €15. "Great" business decision SE... you deserve slow clap.

And you don't think it won't be curb stomped next year when its a year old and going up against another bunch of current gen only 2016 games? I'm not so sure.

I'm surprised Square Enix was allowed to announce the PS4 version before the game launches on XB1.

Anyway game looks great, definitely interested in it. :)

I doubt many people will be interested a year later.

A great game is still a great game one year later.. If you're playing it for the first time, the experience is going to be exact same as it would have been 1 year earlier.

That comment viewed in the context that the PS4 has to do X to remain competitive doesn't make much sense so maybe there is no internal logic to your posts.

It's funny that a console with a near 2:1 lead worldwide needs to worry about remaining competitive.

Sony is blowing them out the water worldwide, so I'd like to see them do the same in the US/UK.

If Sony can substantially widen its lead in those 2 territories as well, then it will be extremely difficult for MS to convince devs for XB1 timed exclusivity.

Well lets hope that doesn't happen, thinking monopoly is a good thing as a customer is stupidity.

Impossible? Money counts most.

Wow I didnt expect any news about release window so soon, I thought that announcement would be after release. 1 year is a loooong wait for PS4 owners, I'm sure many expect something in return like lower price, graphic improvements, all DLC included etc

The best thing about this early announcement is that it provides a firm release window for both PS4 and PC.

Fans on those two delayed platforms now know the game's release window and shouldn't feel the need to impulse buy XB1s in order to play the game.

I've had a couple coworkers who wanted this game and were considering getting XB1s because they assumed it wasn't coming to PS4; this news will likely put off those purchases.

Well, I'm done her. Ignorance is a bliss for the beholder.

I don't think you know what monopoly means. The person you responded to doesn't either. Video games is a niche market with slim profit margins. We shouldn't encourage inferiour products just for the sake of "the holy spirit of competition". We just buy what we like best when we want it. I'll buy RotR early 2017 when it's heavily discounted.

I'll agree to that.

If that's the case then the PS2 should have died in a fire as it was inferior to the Gamecube and Xbox original. Yet it dominated a generation.

Trying to wish a handicap because one competition is faring better is a far more insidious concept to the consumer. If anything, we should encourage the ones catching up has to redouble their efforts instead.

Is not a year, is only 3 or 4 months exclusive.
People have different definitions of exclusive.

The person you quoted thinks a game that comes out on Xbox One, Xbox 360 and ~3 months later on PC and a year later on PS4 is a Xbox One exclusive.

We've had so many posts. It's just easier to accept that people define that words differently and there is no consensus.

Nah, monopoly is fine, as evidenced by the PS1/PS2 gens.

Indeed, and I imagine it will be that much harder to money-hat AAA (timed) exclusivity if the PS4 actually manages to blow the XB1 out of the water in the US/UK.

Yikes. Keep fighting that fight, soldier.

We still on that merry go round?

Absolutely nothing wrong with one platform dominating sales.

So long as Microsoft are intent on lingering around for next gen.
The competition is right there to keep Sony on its toes.

My dictionary seems pretty clear on the matter! :)

I agree although I see the issue as people accepting marketing and PR "twisting" of words.

Marketing loves to use exclusive even when it's wrong because of the connotation of the word. Hence we get "timed exclusive" instead of the more accurate, and prosaic, "timed release".

Tomb Raider is not exclusive to anything and that's literally been confirmed. It is however being released in a timed manner with timed availability, however marketing just loves to use exclusive for that period because it sounds so much better and confuses some people to boot thinking they're getting a real exclusive.

It's all about spinning words and the situation to sound better, something biased fans love to go with (or argue against).

1 year time exclusive is equivalent to sloppy seconds at full price.
Full price would be acceptable if all the DLC were included.

Though even then it would be preferable if it were $10-$20 cheaper, especially when the XB1 and PC versions will probably be pretty cheap in comparison by holiday 2016.

Nothing I need to point out. Your response says it all.
Since you aren't refuting anything, I'll assume you're agreeing with me.

I have no problem with a console dominating in the sales department. The NES, PS2, DS, and Wii are four of my all time favorite systems. It wouldn't surprise me at all if PS4 ends up on that list by the end of the generation.

I have a problem with console warriors.

Sure. I'm not saying there isn't a technically correct word that would be the best descriptor for the situation.

I'm just saying it's futile to try to convince people to not use words. We've tried that. :D

This is what this game's release is: Simultaneous release on Xbox One and Xbox 360 Holiday 2015 with a later release for PC a few months later and a later release for PS4 a year later.

Yep. It's the publisher pretty much saying 'We don't care about your loyalty to this franchise, we don't care about your money. But there are non-fans that might bite, so we'll just put out a minimal effort version, just in case.'

It's a gamble SE are willing to take.

It's up to PS fans whether they wan to support that BS or not.

My guess is that means that it's going to be sold on Steam and the Windows 10 app store, not that it's a Windows 10 exclusive.

Holy shit do some take this stuff personally.

If the game is good it'll still be good a year later. If you don't care by then... you won't care anyway, right?

Its 1080p.

I'd prefer if it was 900p tbh. Can still look good. If they push for 1080p that can mean either the overall game is lower in scope (impacting the PC and PS4 versions), or the Xbox one has details dialled down to hit 1080p. Neither sound great.

I'm amazed how this always creates so much discussion.

This news is a positive one:
1) MS and SE don't have to tiptoe around in the PR jungle anymore and can talk normally
2) PC and PS4 players get the game(, albeit latter a bit later than usual.)

That's it. The quality of the game does not change. It'll still be the same game no matter when you play it. Take Castle Crashers for example. It was a great game even though they ported that one waaaay later for the PS3. We don't know if new TR is good or not but I hope so.
