Fighting Games Weekly | July 27 - Aug 2 | Beta luck next time

They have APEX. There's little crossover between Smash and the other games, and I think EVO is growing too big. Eliminating at least one Smash game would help deal with the growth of SFV. If one Smash game is going to be eliminated, it's Melee, because Evo will pay to keep 4 in. (and I'd argue APEX should pull FGC games from APEX if APEX got overcrowded)

I'm not going to say Smash isn't worthy of an EVO spot- it is. It's the game that could survive being cut from EVO the easiest, it runs on a console used for nothing else, so it's a logistical issue, and the low amount of crossover means that most of the folks who would still show up to EVO wouldn't miss it much. I also think EVO could get overcrowded next year if SFV grows as much as I expect- something will have to give. I don't think EVO can get much bigger and remain a viable 3 day event.

EVO is at its core, a Capcom event. The other games that come in are games that SF fans would care to watch.
I'd suggest EVO attendees would watch Skullgirls over either Smash game (not counting those who showed up for Smash of course)
EVO attendees aren't going to watch either game, let's not kid ourselves.

I think a four day long event (with games with like communities being programmed on similar days with brackets running across 2-3 days) is going to be the future of EVO sooner or later. Can't keep cutting games in an effort to keep the event lean much longer until you start making questionable decisions - and arguably that has already happened this year.

ppl have been making the same tired ass arguments for years. 4 days isnt going to happen. its just not.

why do ppl think evo staff wouldnt have melee and smash4 back when its free money for them...this year had hiccups but in general it was fine. all they have to do is micro manage and setup a bit better and there wont be any problems

I asked about this yesterday, don't think anyone knew.

Wizard hasn't exactly made it a secret that he wishes that the Smash community would "move on from Melee," either. That game is on the chopping block as soon as its support dips significantly.

I honestly wonder if that's going to happen soon, too. Up to this point, there's been a general trend of Melee outdrawing Smash 4 at Smash-centric majors, with the reverse being true of traditional FGC majors. But SmashCon marks the first huge Smash-only event I've heard of where Melee is lagging behind 4 as well.

why dont u just play and get better? ive seen you complain so much dude...just fucking play

Because american internet is ass. Trying to find games online is an another circle of hell on top of everything else that fighting games are.

Oh and the previous complaints about the lobby system still stand, hopefully only until the next version is out.

At a certain point, it can't get any bigger as a three day event. EVO's might be close to that point already.

At that point, you either have to make it a four day event, or you have to cap entrants/attendance.

One way to cap entrants is to cut events down to those you truly want.

what releases in the future that we know of would bring in a major influx aside from the normal gradual increase we have seen over the years( in particular the past 5)?

melee sf4 and now smash4 only stand to be usurped by sf5 given how the event is and given how popular these series are in the western scene .

the current format has a lot of potential for optimization i just think the staff kind of dropped the ball in terms of floor layout organization and the schedule in some ways. tbh they need more help too

the ppl pushing for four days are ignoring that a big chunk of the core target audience cant take off for four days from work. good luck convincing your japanese/korean boss to give you more days off too

I gotta agree here, if EVO became 4 days I'd stop going for sure. Not really because of time off work but to be honest 4 days of game shit and 5-6 days in Vegas is just too much imo.

I'm wiped enough as-is every year. Adding an extra day would be rough.

Hell, good luck convincing your American boss. 4 days is straight-up not practical for a ton of people -- even the people who arrive a day early at Evo now aren't arriving early enough that day for an 8am Thursday pool. If at all possible you're staying all Sunday night to watch finals, too. So really, you already have to take Monday off to travel back if you're not within a night's driving distance from Vegas.

You don't have to stay for all four days. That's all up to evo event scheduling staff to program correctly.

Anyways this year was a little "weird" in that a bunch of games that didn't make main stage still got a lot of publisher support, some of these side tournaments probably got more entrants than main games of years past (I am just speculating I haven't actually checked). If you want to keep things at three days it would be nice to give those TOs more support in an official capacity.

.

dude i dont think you understand how valuable sunday finals day is...again ppl have been making this weak campaign for years and it just doesnt work with our community and our demographic and what the event is about right now

Toronto, but the few times that I tried playing offline it just didn't go well.

Yeah, Toronto's one of the best scenes in NA- for a wide variety of games, not just SF.

Always been a good KOF scene there as well.

I expect SF5 to break 3000 easily next year, that's like adding a 2nd GG event to what we have now
Tekken would also likely be bigger- just from internationals, though I suspect it wouldn't crack 1000
I expect MK, Marvel numbers to drop
BB would do better than Persona due to internationals as well now

If SF5 numbers approach 4k somehow, you've got madness.

Didn't go well how? Did everyone laugh at you?

It's what I do.

lostandconfused, no offense dude but ppl like u disgust me. really hard to feel sorry for ppl that live in the middle of great scenes, dont reach out or seek out the beasts, then complain. check urself

Did you really ask him to check his privilege? lol.

Cool, if you can't get enough of my complaining please join the gaf EXVS irc channel where it will be about even more random nonsense.

Nah nothing like that, just random circumstances like getting sick the day of Toryuken. Otherwise I just can't bring my self to bother someone asking to play me, or interrupt people that are playing a set.

Maybe they're shy or have social anxiety. Not everybody is a social butterfly.

"Hey, can I get next over here?"

If they continue to sit down after the next games (let 'em finish a 2/3 set to be fair), "Hey, let me get in there, I'm next."

Just try that a few times. Most people aren't jerks and understand the rules of the road. You'll be fine.

bruh you are making some wild speculations here and trying to argue a point using them. cmon now.

bb is going to be in the middle of the arc sys cycle so it is unlikely that it will even be at evo given arc sys release history. persona will likely be absent given its limbo status with an unknown future. most ppl expect revelator to be on console by that time but the second anime slot is kind of up in the air (my personal hope is that unielst is on console by march somehow and we get that in the second slot)

marvel will decrease, ki may increase mk will def decrease smash4 and melee will prob stay the same

the big q is whther they run 4 and 5 concurrently. i dont see why they wouldnt unless sony requests they do 5 only, but given ultra4 will be ps4 optimized by then i dont see why sony would do that

at any rate, your numbers are pulled oyt of nowhere. in the event that those numbers are indeed reached, i still dont see why with good planning they cant run both efficiently to top 8 over two days...

less about being a social butterfly and more about not being socially retarded. of course given lostandconfused's most recent post, this is not a given lol

What game do you play? TTT have weeklies at A&C games on Wednesday nights for Capcom games and Monday nights for pretty much everything else. Just go. Don't be shy.

It's that time again...
yYwr71l.jpg

You don't need backups with my character choices :P

To answer, though:

KOF13: EXIori / Karate / Benimaru main with some Kim.
I've enjoyed playing K' and Saiki a lot, and want to learn Duo Lon.

KOF 2002UM: K'/Kasumi/Nameless is pretty much all I play.
Have been messing around with King a bit, but don't really feel the need to branch out. Team is fun and team is the best, why change?

Yata: I don't even have a main yet. Shotos and Chadha seem appealing atm.
Kind of want to learn Azure, dunno if I want to put in the work. That said, air fireballs, mm...

3S: Chun-li main.
I love messing around with Akuma and Ryu. There's something to Hugo as well. I guess I'd play Chun/Akuma/Hugo in those "pick a top/mid/low tier character" tournaments.

GG: Main Elphelt/Faust.
Want to try Sol, Zato and Ky but no time and damn this game takes work.

UNIEL: Gordeau main.
Hilda and Eltnum seem super interesting, but just haven't been putting in the work.

Melee: I'm a dirty casual and play the whole cast sans DK and Bowser. Have actively played Fox the last couple times I got to play and love the character, but probably wouldn't main him because of the inevitable carpal tunnel problems :P

My friends don't usually understand that you can clank Zelda's fireball so I get to play her a lot too, which is fun. Pity she's so bad.

Brawl: Meta Knight for life.
Pikachu and Zelda are the only other characters that don't make me want to snap the disc in two.

VSav: Zabel.
Realistically, I should just fraud it with Sas or Talbain/Gallon, but not really interested. Secondary for fun characters would probably end up being Lilith and Morrigan.

ST: Claw.
I like Ryu and Sim a lot as well, so I'd definitely play them a bunch too.

you know what, you are right and i apologize. i should have asked if you have a problem like autism that makes you socially stupid or awkward. do you?
Never been diagnosed so I wouldn't know but I can't imagine that I am anymore physiologically dysfunctional than the average person living in the western world.
